It would be a temporary step backwards losing Billings (even I can admit that, and he does my head in) I suppose if we lost him we would hope that Hill becomes more consistent (in a good way) and we'd maybe put Sincs on the other wing. But the wings are not the issue. We need smarter forwards...and that is where we would lose out by trading Billings...that is where he's damaging (occasionally)
Lol
So most here saying we don’t need king

just think
Lead up forward ben
Tall stay at home max
Almost impossible to defend

Membry can play as a rover/ half back, could play like steward from cats.

Supports Howard, Wilkie and Higmore

seriously our midfielders are ok if fit so we only need to add 1 or 2 good mids with out first and a ruckman.
Geelong is pretty much that
2 great forwards
1 really good back
3 good mids

Could never work out why we didn’t take Miller that year. McKenzie tested off the charts at the combine in a few key catergories. Just a pity his athletic attributes are way beyond his football ability.
we also got screwed in the 2013 draft. Hogan and Martin went in the mini draft the year before. Both of those players in normal circumstances would’ve been drafted in the 2013 draft. They changed the rules for two years. We could’ve ended up with Kelly if not for that
Reckon we should just do a fan poll for this years draft. Take the player with the most votes. I guarantee the success rate would be higher than our recruiters
I think when we look back at picks, we should be looking at not just who we missed but who we have managed to get in and what year they were in their drafts. For instance the Paddy year was a howler but we still did well in that draft

Players that will b in our side next finals tilt.....

DRAFTS
2011 - Hill, Ross, Webster
2012 - Membry,
2013 - Jones, Billings
2014 - Steele, Butler, Howard, Sinclair
2015 - Gresham
2016 - Long, Battle
2017 - Clark, Coffield, Higgins, Calvarino? Paton, Marshall
2018 - King, Bytel
2019 - Burnes, Connolly, Wilkie
2020 - Alison, Highmore

yeah we missed patracca but if someone said you can have Steele, Howard, Butler and Sinclair you walk away from 2014 pretty happy

Membrey won't play as a rover and I doubt he'd move back. We aren't really desperate for another 3rd tall defender.

I'd say if Ben King came we'd get rid of the two ruck combo and one or both of the Kings would pinch hit when needed.

Membry looks great in the backline?

If we can get to Geelong levels of success of playing and drafting, I'll be happy.

Who's going to get the ball to them though?

The problem with that is that we ruined other drafts buying up what we missed the first time. I'd love a Petracca quality player though so it still hurts.

The thing is, if our salary cap was already tight this year we can't just put all his wages on it and then retire him. His wages will be on the books next year, the only option is to keep him on the list and hope he can contribute. Then he's gone at the end of 2022.

I know everyone wants the comfort of having him off the list but I just don't see how it makes sense.
Or we renegotiate his contract. He takes a pay cut and an extra year, so we split his final year over 2 with possibly less money, if he’s willing to take it.
That way our cap doesn’t restrict us next year. Unfortunately he gets an extra year but we do it under the assumption that it’s more a coaching role not playing role.

Exactly, we are crap at developing our own.. haven’t developed a star player since Jack Steven. So change the coach, change the supporting staff, change the head recruiter; raise the standards in everything on field and the results will come..

Appointing an inexperienced Richo when an experienced Choco was available, then go for a soft touch Ratten when standards are already so low just extended the mistake.. Including Scott Watters, that’s 9 years down the drain.. Please don’t let it go on any longer..
not doing so well this year are we MrFoster? i bet you didn't say that last year.

Hunter C
Zac Jones

Jack Steele
Rowen Marshal

Yeah apparently its only mids mids mids and mids - that's all that teams need.

Round 9 v Geelong - is the only time this season that Ryder and Marshall have played together against a Top 4 team. Yep we lost - but not because we because we got smashed by their midfield - it was because we didn't kick straight.

I'd argue we have a greater need for a chb than another mid. With early picks at the draft table no doubt you should be looking at "best available" unless you can't split them, that's when it becomes "needs based".

Next needs based gap is another ruckman to take over from Paddy. Not sure about Max Heath because I haven't seen him play but I would have thought that the highly mobile, high leaping "athlete" type may have been a better option.

Unfortunately he went to North.

Well a flashy version of Billy Longer will have to do then. At least we have a developing ruck, we probably don't see results for a couple of years and some rucks take years to show their quality but you definitely don't get one if you don't draft one.

That is a very average midfield unfortunately. Plenty of good soldiers no doubt but lack top end quality.

It's much better than it was but really lacks some absolute top end. Steele and Crouch are a both that step off the stars quality and Jones is inconsistent but probably our best and most dynamic mid, his body looks a worry though. Gresham looks like his body might hold him back from being a full time mid. I think he's going to have to be a De Goey type. Then you have some NQR and some developing players. We probably need 3 more rotations and a few to become elite.

Clark is probably the best chance at this stage to go next level.

Yet he's played one game this year as a genuine full time mid.

Would love to have seen him go into as many centre bounces as we give Bytel when he plays.
Think most agree with you
Why do you think he hasn’t spent more time in there?

I doubt anyone actually thinks we only need mids. It's obvious we need another key defender and eventually a replacement for Ryder.

The thing with ruckmen is you can usually find a decent one at a low cost. Marshall and Ryder are examples of this.

It's bloody hard to find an elite mid outside the top 30 of the draft.
