Seriously with Frawley retiring would like to see us get a solid/strong KPD to either help out Dougal or be waiting in the wings in case of an injury.
May have found one which would cost only a draft or rookie pick, only 1.94mt but 98kg. played for the Doggies during their strong years so can see why he only reached the one game. Northern Bullants player 23yo Kieran Collins.

Geelong giving to the Demons just shows how we totally messed up this year , how can we just about beat the Cats at there home and crater to the Crows - we should of been playing finals.
And in the end demons won.

Your view , I wonder how he would feel if some old 34 yr old who is past his prime took his Rookie spot at the Saints.
The guy is a club champion who rose from a rookie draft to be captain , a hell of a story , but staying on when he is past his usefulness is a case of another old player who doesn't know when to throw in the towel.

To be honest, I'm hoping he spends the bulk of the season running around at Sandy, to bring a bit of extra stability and leadership there, and hopefully help with development. We need Sandy to work as a proper feeder team, not a rabble who get flogged week-in-week-out and develop a losing culture in our young players.

Let him run out for Round 23 as a "formal" swansong, and name him as medical sub for the Grand Final should we get there.

Geelong's salary cap is one of the biggest mysteries in the AFL. Incredible they keep affording the players they do.

Carlton heading into the territory with Cerra rumoured to join on a big contract too.
There's no mystery to it. They are a professional outfit and utilize the loopholes to pay big money outside the cap, same as Essington and doubtless many other clubs.

How is he playing? He was pretty shit at AFL level and a really high pick. One reason I wouldn't take a KP defender with a first round pick.

Having Dangerfield, Guthrie, Menegola, Duncan and Selwood all winning the ball and getting it in there helps.

It does but we have mids we are not totally bereft , yes we need to add to that and in past couple seasons we have with Jones, Crouch hopefully Bytel and a Clarke etc running through there plus we’ll get a Gresham back fir more outside run. Point is we will continue adding mids I suspect but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan for 2 KPF

Yeah sounds like he loves the joint 2 months ago.
Agree on your assessment there, he’s got some talent and he goes in hard. But I think he has a bit of improvement to do on just getting his hands on it a bit more whatever position he plays, also his weakness is in ability to change direction after he gets moving (too easily sidestepped), I dunno wether he’s too top heavy but hopefully it’s something he can work on.
He needs to be given the job of marking the ball at one end or the other. If that's not gonna happen then we should trade him.
I think Sherman has showed enough to perhaps be in front of Batts as a forward now.

The Cats have been able to sell the dream of constant contention and always look one or two players off a premiership. Geelong and surf coast real estate is cheaper and suits guys from the country who want a less stressful lifestyle.

I think they said Selwood has missed one finals series in his 15 seasons. Geelong only got him because they unexpectedly missed finals in 2005. Jack Steven played for 13 seasons and never played in a final. Players come and sign on for less to be part of the dream at the Cattery. Players that come to the Saints know it's unlikely that they play finals and as a smaller club you'll never get much of a profile or outside deals so you are going to attract fringe types who just want to come for cash.

Guys like Shaun Higgins wanted one last crack at glory so he signed with them knowing he'd be every chance at eternal glory. Same with Cameron, he wanted to go where he might actually get every chance at success.

We are in a cycle of paying guys semi developed like Clark and Coffield as the finished article so that they don't run off then if they don't come on to be top flight players they have already become used to being highly paid so you off load them like we are with Billings, Seb and Dunny. It's like a poverty cycle from paying for stuff on credit. Then on top of that we tempt GOPs over to the club on superstar money.

That's why you need to draft your core. Pay them on output not potential and it can be turned around but it's a 5 year program not a quick fix.
So none of that it’s at odds with drafting Bing as one of your “core” pieces???
Ofcourse cats can trade on success - they’ve had it so too Hawks that’s the benefit of planning for sustained success and not quick flash in the pan stuff. Yes lifestyle assets help - but Dees going ok and beach a long way away from them...
Anyway that’s all irrelevant IF you have a player like Ben King who says he wants to play for your club - you just make that happen. Cats would (and did) with Dangerfield and Cameron. I actually think we need to be thinking challenge starts properly in 23 and goes beyond the Steele era of when both key pieces Ben and Max King will still be around. History tells you it takes a finals series or 2 before sides be one hardened top 4 candidates.

Don’t know how he’s travelling now, but I’m like you, not keen on KPD in drafts as I believe they take some time to mature.

Past the days of recruiting back ups who arent that flash- Just recruit a player who is good or will be good and throw them in the side, if that player is better than the incumbent well too bad even if it is Howard. That is how you get better as a team- no more Hunters/Frawleys etc.....

Collectively both are costing significantly less then a Ming and Bing combo will cost us. That mix has yet to win them a premiership either.
True but you have to be a serious challenger before you win a flag like top 4/2 ....they are we aren’t
Right now we are hoping Membrey or a kid in Sharman helps us kick enough goals with the odd cameo game from Higgins....I’d rather put my eggs in the Kings basket and have those other guys as the icing on the cake...not the cake
And if we are paying Ming 750 over 4 and Ben wants to play with his bro at a club they both dreamt of playing fit well you offer the same ...the $ call us up to Ben ultimately

My point is that they can find $1 million in cap space for Cameron because their other contracting can be kept down. Danger is on below market rates. Finding players like Stewart and Menagola on the cheap also mean they find guns who aren't used to big money early. Hanners and Hill are taking a lot of money out of our cap for a lot less effect.

I've stuck a post that will be at the top of each page of the thread for those that can't be bothered discussing the list, if people get sick of seeing it let me know and I can unsticky it.

Out of contract players are up to date bar Jones who I'm not sure of exactly. If he stays on the list beyond list lodgement (obviously) or gets a new deal I'll take him off there. Or if anyone knows how long he signed for.

Cody Raak is a guy that is supposed to be a good VFL KPB and next best state level after Schlong. Was a bulldogs NGA not picked up. Missed the mid season draft and might be a rookie option.

I’m sure the beach helps but I suspect it’s more about success. At Hawks I was sure the lure was that success abs a great coach for 17 years....they’ve built that up and so have the Cats
I don’t subscribe to the theory that everyone on their list has a partner who is MD at Cotton On or is getting Bomber Thompson real estate deals. Guys like Sellwood etc would take less to challenge for a flag (they have a lot of older players who let’s face it are in the “win a flag now” space) who you imagine would also take less
We don’t have that sustained success hence we pay overs it’s true for Hill types but as we climb and if we get the key pieces in place to suggest we are genuine challengers we can become a destination club. Anyway, point is still IF Bing says I want to play at St Kilda you do it - how often does an elite player nominate us?? We couldn’t afford not to make that happen we’d be nuts to not do it.
I still doubt he does - I suspect in business/footy world Kings know their lot and Ben will want to be his own KPF star and may get his $1m good luck to him if so.

I doubt he’s unhappy, rumours have probably just gained traction.

Most will say he’s been played out of position but he still needs to improve his game, currently looks more like a depth player then starting 22 so hopefully he has a big pre season.

So much speculation.

Enough is enough! I decided to ask the lad myself in my latest podcast

Geelong from last night.
In red are the 30+ gang
Guys like Selwood, Hawkins and danger would have got paid big early front ended deals (along with their wives at cotton on) probably not taking up a lot of cap space recently.
Guys like menegola, Henderson and Stanley wouldn’t be on much at all.
Smith probably came because hawks pushed him out and at 32 no one else would have been interested.
Dahl and Rohan both Geelong boys came back to live near Mum.
Rest of that 22 is a bunch of role players would be on minimum wage too.

Hill - Butler- Kent have been gifted games

Who were they holding out that was in better form is the pertinent question.

All good & well to say drop them but with VFL games seemingly played once a month & a decent injury list all year we didn’t exactly have multiple blokes kicking down doors.

Schenslog as a DFA.

Crazy no one took him in the MSD.

We nailed the Sharman pick but getting him as well woukd have been gold and we had the spots available.

There will be plenty of clubs interested now though.
