I have mixed feelings about this all. While I'm sorry to lose any of the players, I don't begrudge them the chance to earn some extra money and perhaps becoming fully professional.

But thinking about it more, this is kind of assistance the Bears needed in the early days. Our visceral reaction to it all is the same as Carlton, Hawthorn, Essendon et al had back in the day.

Also, in the long run, a more even competition benefits the entire league and should increase the rate of development.

Only good thing is that I wont have to hear Bates say Lions versed another team again.
OK I am starting to feel slightly better about this

Still think we'll lose at least 2 more core players.
Yeah, it feels like Wardlaw is gone for certain. I am preparing myself for that,

While I can accept losing players, if melbourne don't lose some big names as well that will be extremely dissappointing and will raise some questions. I know there's not real way to do it but would have been better if the max losses came with some caveat that it had to be spread more evenly.

Doesn’t look like happening atm.

The season would be a foregone conclusion if this was case.

Cathy and Ally are a solid midfield combo. I reckon an increase in responsibility on them will offset the Bates/Bodey losses.
Plus Dawes and I would play O'Dwyer around the footy more too. That's a solid start. We'll probably need at least 2 more. I think Conway could spend time on ball. It's probably a bit much to expect Bella Smith to come straight back (I have no idea about her injury return timetable). Hodder has spent a little time up field. Then there's a couple of youngsters too. It's not ideal but I think we have options at least, even if none of them are anywhere near Batesy. Regardless, I think we should try and bring one more mature body into the team.

Up forward, I think we'll be hoping for Zimmi's talent to shine through. She's a different type to Wardlaw but arguably just as talented.

We got shown up against Melbourne who, on the whole, move the ball better than we do. Unfortunately Bates going puts a fair dent in that capacity. We seem to rely more on pressure and surge footy which I think is limited. Skill and composure are what we could work on to take us further.

With so many of our players opting out to other clubs this coming season and let’s face it it’s a trend over almost each season , last excluded are we talking a culture problem ? Great facilities great coach good chance for success so what is it that makes Brisbane a bus station for some of these girls ?

$$$. I wouldn't say we're a bus station, or we have lost anyone due to culture.

The AFLW has a tier payment structure, where teams can have 2 marquee signings on any figure, then there are 4 tiers of payments; ~$72k tier one, ~$55 tier two, and ~$47 tier three, ~40k tier four.

That's decent money for 6 months work, but how many players have a job where they can step away for 6 months, and then walk back in after 6 months. Would be good if you were a draftee out of school going to Uni though, especially if you were at a uni with trimesters, where you could two semesters full time and fit training around that, and go part time during the season.

Our initial team had quite a few players from other states, and we lost a few of these in the initial round of expansion.

Our initial list also had a quite a few Gold Coaster's who we lost when Gold Coast joined the league.

This will be the first real preseason where we'll lose players purely because they're being offered more than what we can offer.

It really irks me that through all of this Melbourne aren't losing anyone. How on earth is a team based in the same city as eight other clubs able to hold together their list considering they have the same salary cap as everyone else. It's not like outside of Pearce and Harris they are getting more media opportunities.
On top of that, we're losing born and bred Queenslanders to interstate clubs.
It just doesn't make sense.

Joke of a competition. I really feel for the coaches. You spend so much time and effort to develop very good players and then can’t keep them. Bates and Jesse were our two most important players last year IMO.

My theory is that the players are leaving for lifestyle reasons. We've had several of our players want to be in what they clearly think is a superior city in terms of living the kind of life they want. No offence to the vics on here but apart from the footy, what does Melbourne have that Brisbane doesn't? Don't get me wrong, Melbourne is a perfectly adequate city but without the footy it's just another city.

Just on Wardlaw, I thought the speculation was she was going to the saints but in the club press release the club says it's looking into getting deals done with no mention of st kilda? (paraphrasing)
Is she also going to the Hawks? It pisses me off massively that a club that had no interest in having a women's team scores quality players from us for FREE.

It’s a “national” competition.

I don’t begrudge players leaving for more money, better job offers, more playing time or opportunities.

We can’t be bringing players like Neale, Daniher, Dunkley, etc in, and whinge if we lose players. (Yes I’m aware one is the women’s team and one is the men’s team).

What will suck is the level of compensation we receive, and what can we realistically achieve with such compensation.

Ideally we have the first pick in the QLD zone, and we somehow manage to convince a top tier interstate draftee to nominate QLD.

We’ve lost 4 women to Victoria and have delisted a further 3.

That’s a lot of list spots to fill when there is only an overage draft being held before the next season begins.

Well isn't this just a shame...

Whatever, I trust on Craig to get out team humming and hopefully we can give proof to the fact that we're not just a team of champions, but a champion team.

Best of luck to all those who leave

That's ok - sign the Hodge boys up and let's get even with Hawks.
