We can only hope. Although stadium agreements and requirement for minimum number of blockbuster fixtures will likely prevent this from reoccurring g.

Stadium Agreement at Docklands for fixed games is a thing of the past with AFL direct ownership. Minimum games and attendance contract at the MCG still stands. AFL will still want to turn a profit at Marvel though.

2nd biggest crowd of the year behind the Thursday Carlton vs Richmond game. Terrific crowd considering it was put at the "dead" Sunday timeslot.

That time slot is anything but 'dead'. It's actually one of the best ones for everyone to be able to attend.

Local footy back though so makes it hard with kids playing on Sunday. It's not the primetime slot and generally games put there aren't really blockbusters. Probably would have cracked 75k had it been on a Friday, Saturday night.

Put it on Friday or Sat night and those kids don't attend in great numbers at all. Friday nights have never been a massive boost for crowds, clubs want that slot more for the tv exposure.

What? The biggest crowd this year so far was on a Thursday night. I've been to Friday night games against Geelong and Collingwood with 75-90 thousand. Don't think that is the case at all.

I know we aren’t the target market, but I don’t like it travelling from regional Vic. 3.20pm works perfect for me [emoji23]

Saying it doesn’t align with the train times is an understatement. You are either there 90 minutes early on the 9am train or miss the 1st quarter on the 11am.

Sunday mornings aren’t meant for 7am starts [emoji23]

The argument isn’t that you can’t get big crowds at night, it’s that it isn’t the boost you think it is. No reason to think today’s game would suddenly attract 10k more if played at night.

For everyone that can’t attend early on a Sunday afternoon there’s people who can’t attend games that don’t finish until 10pm or much later.

I agree re 1.10pm (4.45pm on a Saturday is underrated too)

I’m just happy Hawthorn isn’t getting smashed with 3.20pm (Sunday winter) / 4.45pm (Sunday) and Mother’s Day games and getting slammed for poor attendance.

So I’ll take the small wins

Yeah I agree to a point. Maybe not for your general game like say Dogs vs Swans, but when it comes to blockbusters and top sides who draw great crowds when they're playing well, I think they pull better crowd numbers on the primetime slots. They get hyped up more during the week and promoted better. Plus I think it's a bit of a myth that families don't attend night games. They do when it's worth it.

Unlikely. If it were Saturday night I’d be lucky to draw 60,000. Saturday night isn’t a good crowd drawing slot usually.

Every time slot has its weaknesses and reasons why it’s unsuitable. Look back at the crowds that go at 1:10pm Sunday, you’ll be surprised how strong they are.

So I decided to go back to the 2019 season to see what was the biggest attendence at 1:10 and it actually wasn't too bad. 57,000 for Richmond vs West Coast, next best was 53,000 Hawthorn vs Geelong. So maybe not a bad slot after all, but I still think the blockbusters draw better on the night games.

Round 16 2019 = Carlton vs Melbourne (55,593).

The 3.20pm Sunday timeslot is a classic example of a timeslot with logical drawbacks (ie not crowd friendly) which has drawn a number of large crowds due to attractive pairings.

From 2015 the AFL / Channel 7 pushed to schedule a number of Vic v Vic MCG blockbusters as lead into the 6pm news.

Melbourne’s MCG crowds this year will be quite interesting.

If any club was to have a glow (Covid notwithstanding) it would be a success starved football club playing 12 plus MCG games after effectively 24 months of crowd-free football…

I wonder whether the demographic of our supporters will have an impact - ageing supporter base more likely to be hesitant due to covid as well as the electronic ticketing? I guess we'll get a real indication in a couple of weeks when we play GWS on a Saturday night but the crowd against the Bombers was disappointing.

Agree. Sunday 3:20 is only marginally better than the 4:40 Sundsy one.

The poor crowd against the Bombers was in large part the Bombers fault… It’s performance in round 1 threw their fanbase offside and it will take several weeks of strong performances to redeem themselves. The Bombers rollup was poor and the neutral support didn’t show up as the contests ballon was well and truly burst in the weeks leading up to it.

The Essendon v Crows game looks to be around the 21-24k mark I reckon. Having the F1 on doesn’t help either.
