they would have needed to trade the 3 picks (17, 20 and 21) at that point, or lose on of them
it was a masterful gambit by the swans and snookered the giants.
how do you trade 3x top 20~ picks in a few minutes.

Have backup plans. It was hilarious I just wish we did the triple bid you guys were lucky we were nice lol

In short, you lose all the picks you don't have list spots before the draft starts. I assume Geelong only had two list spots open, and therefore if you take two spots into the draft, the rest get wiped out.

This is the draft order based on what picks and list spots teams had going into the draft.
What happens if the team has 2 list spots open but has 3 draft picks before the draft starts and they trade two of those picks during the draft for one pick and want to use that late pick the originally had?!

Let’s say Richmond went into the draft with picks 53&58&70. They have two list spots open. So pick 70 is removed.
They do a draft night trade to combine 53&58 to a higher pick.
Then they need pick 70 to use in the end?

haha. we still have threats from GWS and the dogs.
part of me wants a bid though. feel George and Hustwaite get taken, so not many left I'd be after. F2 would be handy now.

but suspect we grab Barnett then match a Davey bid
key now is Munkara surviving through the next 20 odd picks

Hustwaithe will slide won’t be shocked if he’s late 20’s early 30’s. There’s a lot of “what if” with Hustwaite. Gut feel but think there’s better talents on the board some tall options too

Which is why they should have passed and let swans have rowston.
They definitely wouldve considered it

This is where the franchise teams suffer. It doesnt only just hit at the top end but in areas like this aswell.

GWS find it hard enough to find kids that want to stay so when a quality local is there they have to pay extra to get them. Always paying that extra 20% for guys like Cadman, Rouston ect hurts in the end. Hard to catchup that extra 20%

As a West Coast fan, you have a fair bit of amnesia around his influence on the '18 midfield.

They didn't look the same before and haven't looked the same since he left.
As the first coach in history to give a half time spray he should be heralded for motivating 3 players for the second half of a grand final.

Pretty happy with trading into next years draft, we were always trying to get out of this one and into next one, disappointing we couldn't swap the 2 firsts this year into an early first next year. But if it ends up being 18 for 27 this year and 20 + 39 next year, hard to complain about that.

Well GWS could have traded their remaining first round picks for futures, then traded back in after matching a bid slightly later like Sydney did with Nick Blakey.

But that probably didn't have time to happen on such short notice.

Good question, I wonder what the cut-off is for that last pick to be surrendered. Is it when all list spots have been fulfilled? i.e. If Richmond used picks 53 and 58 would 70 only be surrendered at that point?

However, I don't believe you are forced to use any of your draft picks. I believe you can simply pass and select someone in the PSD or Rookie Draft for example

Really when you look at it, it was a no brainer for the Rouston bid

It improved your draft hand and allowed you to get the guy you wanted....Konstanty. Which probably doesnt happen otherwise

The Max M bid you guys genuinly were interested and saw as a Rampe replacement no doubt

You guys wouldve been fine with Rouston aswell, not saying you didnt want him.

Nope and who with? There just wasnt options and the time doesnt help.

GWS and no one for that matter expected a bid when it happened

If he ends up a quality player, you'll forget about what you paid
Yeah pretty much this. I was shocked when it all went down but you’d have to conclude:

a) they really, really like him and think he fits well with the type of game Mitchell wants to develop.

b) they had solid mail others were circling.

Alternatively is was a desperation move by a list manager who had been accused of being too passive. We’ll know in a year or two whether it was worth it.

Think our trade period might come back to bite us more.

Not the same picks though. Can't do that anymore

Was a free hit pick. We’d have been comfortable with him. The Adelaide kid was a Rampe type, have no issue there thought we’d go at oick 20, but there were whispers we were interested in him

Once there's a name attached they're not trading for a pick anymore. It's not the same as before the draft where you don't know for sure who you'll get. Hindsight should be based on Weddle's career, not some points comparison.
I'm not comparing the points. I'm comparing what they gave up.

They gave up a lot to get to pick 18 to get Weddle.
