Are teams allowed to trade a player after they’ve been drafted on draft night?

No, but they should be able to.

The player has zero difference in going to one side and then half an hour later going elsewhere when they haven't even left the room yet.

Arguably it should be without the player's consent too due to that. It makes no difference to the player.

Really when you look at it, it was a no brainer for the Rouston bid

It improved your draft hand and allowed you to get the guy you wanted....Konstanty. Which probably doesnt happen otherwise

The Max M bid you guys genuinly were interested and saw as a Rampe replacement no doubt

You guys wouldve been fine with Rouston aswell, not saying you didnt want him.
Also, maybe a much lesser factor, but it took another tradable pick out of the market, and drove up the value of the pick they did trade.
May have made it easier to get so much out of Hawthorn.

Not the same picks though. Can't do that anymore
too little time to do too much
Clearly hawks were keen on that pick. So could have picked up that haul for 27
Then take slight unders for the next 2 to get them out of the way. And abandon this draft for next.

Cadman + Rowston probably not the worst outcome.

Guessing that early bid caught them by surprise and they just accepted there was little they could do without further undermining their hand.

I dont mind the Weddle pick in isolation. A defensive group of of Weddle, Day, Grainger-Barass, Sicily, Hardwick, Scrimshaw and Blanck will be lit in 2-3 years or so. People seem to remember their 2013-15 run for their offence but Gibson won their BnF in 2013 and 2015 and Lake won the Norm in 2013, Hawthorn tend to build from the back to front.

My problem is they essentially gave up 27, ~20 and ~38 to get him. That is a big price to pay for any player, let alone a 7th defender. His talent isn't in question, just the price to get him for mine.

Mark McKenzie sees Weddle pushing up to the wing with his speed and tank. I'm wondering if he sees him like a Blicav's 2.0.

Mitchell has been very vocal about pushing Day into the middle.

It's a lot to pay but we must rate Weddle very highly. I don't read too much into body language but the recruitment team all looked very happy.

But so did Dodo and the fistpump.

What happens if the team has 2 list spots open but has 3 draft picks before the draft starts and they trade two of those picks during the draft for one pick and want to use that late pick the originally had?!

Let’s say Richmond went into the draft with picks 53&58&70. They have two list spots open. So pick 70 is removed.
They do a draft night trade to combine 53&58 to a higher pick.
Then they need pick 70 to use in the end?

In your example, Richmond go into the draft with pick 55 and 58, and pick 70 disappears into the ether and no longer exists in it's current form.

If they do a 2 for 1 trade like you suggested, Richmond is then given an another pick at the end of the draft, the same way to when picks are used to match bids for players. This is an additional pick and not a pick they had previously.

No deficit apparently but they traded out their first rounder? 😂

Oh we didn’t go into deficit but we have no picks left…
They still have 37 so they did well to protect that. It was lose 37 or their 2 x F3s. They made the right call but while there is technically no deficit, their 2023 draft hand was reduced to get it all done.

I tend to refer back to Kinear Beatson before this draft. Basically said there were 7 top end talents, then it evens out for 20 odd. Actually feel although it's on the high price to pay scale, both clubs win. One thing I'll say is the Hawks tend to draft really well in this range and if they see someone you back their system. I was surprised there needed to be a F3rd attached though.

You lose excess draft picks when all clubs make their list lodgement a week before the draft, so the AFL can calculate the number of picks at the draft.

It’s not like you lose the pick right before the draft. You lost it a week ago.

Every club knows these rules.

You’ve had 6 weeks between the trade period and the draft, where clubs are still allowed to trade picks.

But late picks are essentially viewed as worthless these days (unless there’s a team looking for points), so there are very few, or no buyers for late picks.

Yep, Swans would have been happy had either them if those teams rejected to match. The only surprise around Max M was we were expected to use our 2nd first round pick on him. Not our first pick straight off the bat.

What would the back up plan be?

Trade all of their next 3 picks out?

I'd have at least traded 2 before the draft into the future, then had trade options already basically agreed to in order to get back in this year (crows have done this basically, watch them get back in using north's future 2 or whatever they have). Both our bids were fair they were genuine to a degree, especially the second one- he would have been a Rampe replacement. I was shocked we didn't bid on Davey but very happy we took Konstanty, we needed a small forward badly.

Nah, there would be further tantrums, Mums crying etc if there was an out and the new club could offload them straight away. Pou would have demanded the Saints trade him to the biggest club.

Have backup plans. It was hilarious I just wish we did the triple bid you guys were lucky we were nice lol
You really need to think this through, as to what you’re actually suggesting, how many clubs would have been required for such backup plans, where it would have left GWS at this draft, and the long term impacts on their list.

And (and it’s a ducking big and) what it likely would have meant for the kids GWS might have eventually drafted.

The fact that you keep trotting out the “have back up plans” line, actually demonstrates how clueless you are, for what you’re suggesting.

They paid a heavy price though. It could easily end up as 18 for 27, 19 and 38.
It's literally 0 chance of ending up that. Suns likely to have 2 first round academy kids, Parish a free agent compo pick. Does the next Darcy command another first rounder? Does McCabe at hawthorn get into that range? I am sure there is a long list of potential kids that are tied to academy or F/S selections. First pick of second round is 22 tonight, last year it was 21 and year before 27.

maybe it could be 18 for 27, 21 and 41.

If Swans hadn't of been stalling and bidding on players whilst negotiating it would have been 16 as well.

16 for 21(best case for swans) and 27 + whatever the future 3rd is. Feels like the Hawks have paid a small premium but fair few over reactions as well

It's not like we used our first round pick next year to bring in anyone 😂
Of course, it’s a great trade period for you. Just Lions supporters are trying to make out like you’ve used ‘22 draft hand & McStay only for your haul. It’s basically two draft hands wiped, which don’t get me wrong is still a very very good return and any club would take that.

But it wasn’t some master stroke of recruiting/trading, you got dealt pocket Aces and made the most of it. Congrats
