The club has committed to redrafting Ryan Lester & Nakai Cockatoo in the rookie draft. We also have to upgrade James Madden to the senior list, so we'll probably draft him as the third player.

And we'll add Connor McKenna as a SSP signing.
I'm not sure that an SSP signing would count in the required 3 ND selections; I would think it does not.

An upgrade would, although from what we've seen with GWS and Callum Brown's elevation off the Cat B rookie list, the draft pick to do so is already removed - does that match the vacant main list slots and draft picks that Lions have?

Sounds like Phillipou lives in a bubble where there is nothing but praise and adulation from family and friends.

Eventually someone with runs on the board is going to give him a serve and burst his bubble. Be interesting to see how he responds to criticism and discovering he's not special

South Australian kid who has been told he's God's gift to footy who might crumble mentally when he gets to the big league and cops a few bakes hey ... now where have I seen that before.

Crumble mentally 😂 your club was an absolute rabble this yr you have to shoulder majority of the blame FFS.

According to this, there's a rookie upgrade period immediately after day 2 of the draft, so I wonder if you can wait until then to upgrade rookies.

The vacant main list spots and draft picks assume we haven't upgraded Madden as yet. Our recruiting boss Stephen Conole flagged the only picks we'll likely be taking are Ashcroft, Fletcher, McDowell-White (category B) and a category B rookie from our academy.

The list spots / draft picks / upgrade process is all a bit opaque. I always thought that the draft picks allocated were before rookie upgrades (ie you were allocated picks for those list spots at the draft - relevant to Brisbane's situation this year) but my analysis of the Swans' list suggests otherwise. We started the year with a senior list of 36, have lost six senior listed players and gained one. So right now we have 31 senior listed players. Given the maximum senior list size is 38, that suggests we should have been allocated seven picks in the ND. However, the official draft order lists only five.

A logical explanation is that two rookie upgrades have already been accounted for in determining the senior list size (McLean and Wicks, who have both exhausted their permitted three years on the rookie list).

I don't know the Lions' situation as well as you, but my reading of the list changes is that you also lost six senior players and have added two. Assuming (maybe incorrectly) that you also carried a senior list of 36 last season, that suggests six available draft picks [38 - (36-6+2)]. But the AFL draft order indicates the Lions have five allocated draft picks, which is consistent with them already having accounted for the upgrade of Madden. Unless I've miscounted list changes (eg mistaken a departed player as senior when they were actually a rookie) or my assumption about the starting list size is wrong, that seems consistent with my deductions about the Swans list/picks/timing of rookie upgrades.

Anyone know the definitive answer?

We had 38 senior listed, 4 category A and 2 category B rookies this year.

Our senior list changes so far:
Out (7) - McStay, Robinson, Smith, Berry, McFadyen, Cockatoo, Lester
In (2) - Dunkley, Gunston

So 5 free seniors list spots = 5 draft picks. Madden/rookie upgrade not factored in.

I'm still on the Tsatas train if we keep pick 5.

Cadman
Ashcroft
Sheezel
Wardlaw
Tsatas
Humphrey
Phillipou
Clark
Ginbey
MacKenzie

That's the top 10 for me.

The hawks really paid a thousand bucks on flights from Adelaide and spooked Essendon out of trading their pick. Nice.
i know this may sound weird but this could really be a blessing in disguise and a win for both teams. Phillipou is exactly what Essendon need, Tsatas is exactly who Hawthorn need. The hawks get a player that’s rated top 3 all year and Essendon fills its biggest need since Watsons retirement.

That works. A rookie upgrade is included in the 3 required picks IIRC

Love that there’s so many unknowns that’ll impact the top 15.
Suns - Ginbey or Humphrey
Hawks - Tsatas or Clark (assuming dons take Phillipou)
Cats - Tsatas, Clark, Busslinger, Allan, or even Ginbey if available?
Eagles - take who is left out of the above?

Essendon spooked Hawthorne into paying $1000 and showing their hand through smoke and mirrors. Nice.
The clubs really should know that spookin season ended three weeks ago.

I do really hope you're right about Tsatas and wrong about what your club does. Inject the new Greek Freak into my veins midfield ASAP.

How is Tsatas exactly what Hawthorn need?

They lost their two of their three biggest inside ball winners and apart from Newcombe I don’t think the likes of Ward are going to be massive contested ball winners.

Tsatas is definitely a nice piece for a building side, but he’s hardly “exactly what they need” as a player with the lowest contested ball % of a potential top 10 midfielder in the last decade.

I think Wardlaw or Humphries or Phillipou are probably closer to exactly what they need.
