Unfortunately Gresham doesn’t have anybody covered sitting on the sidelines every year, he just never plays anymore. Kennedy had similar stats to Steele this year and Hewett averaged more contested possessions than him. Then they have a former top 2 pick who can’t get a look in the middle yet because of that midfield quality and depth. And they’re all younger than guys like Ross and Crouch, I just think they’re in a much better position than us long term right now.
Hang on, so you’re saying that when players aren’t playing well then everyone thinks they’re not very good, and then when they play better everyone thinks they’re not so bad? What a revelation.
When you're playing terrible footy naturally your players don't look great. That could be because they just aren't talented or your game plan sucks. We will see how we go next year. I don't think they're light years ahead - Cripps and Walsh both better than any of our mids tho. We beat them this year and we'll probably still beat them next year thoStats are nice but they don’t tell the full story. Steele is a star but Cripps is on a different level because he’s one of the best contested ball winners in the comp and kicks way more goals. Crouch vs Walsh is not a comparison IMO, Walsh almost won a brownlow in his third season whereas if Crouch has 30 possessions you wouldn’t even know it. Adelaide literally let him go for nothing that would never happen with Walsh. Then they’ve basically got two Max King’s and one of the best key defenders in the comp, to me they’re miles ahead on talent.

Dow is terrible. Probably lucky to not be delisted. We'll bring back a lot of injured players next year and hopefully get more from Billings and Hill types. I'm a lot more optimistic that we will be able to use the players at hand next year.
I meant Cerra who was actually pick 5, that’s my bad. For some reason I thought Brayshaw and Cerra were right after each other. Either way though if they don’t win a flag in the next five years they won’t be able to blame it on a lack of talent like we can. We’ve got some guys who could join Steele and King on that level but the difference is theirs are proven. At least now we’ll have a coach that is capable of finding a few more.Dow is terrible. The AFL and the media want Carlton to be successful because of ratings and that's it. Despite all the hype, in reality, there team isn't substantially better than ours.Carlton have the perception of momentum because you can see their upside. They have a super deep midfield with match winners, two Coleman medalists up forward and one of the best key defenders in the game. I would kill for their core.
They had a lot of injuries then. It's still strange that we beat them with their forward line, we had Battle playing on McKay, and we were in shocking form. The AFL and the media want Carlton to be successful because of ratings and that's it. Not that long ago you were talking about trying to pick him up cheap.

I feel like they lack X factor. The big forwards are a point of difference for sure but through the middle they're a bit vanilla.
They'll be one of the more interesting sides to watch this year as finals will be the minimum expectation and if things go pear-shaped then the pressure will come.
The jury is still out on Voss's coaching. The St Kilda game a case in point.
Like I said - no better (and probably worse than us) but over hyped by the media. Its all about eyeballs and ratings not actual spread of talent. They had a lot of injuries then. De listed free agents window opens tomorrow - Narkle, RCD or Jed Anderson?
He has previously said he hopes to inherit the number 10 jumper
I think Curnow and McKay are they keys for the Blues. Like the Cats two top 10 arguably top 5 forwards makes their team dynamic and dangerous. Injury could strike either though. Max is at the level but is only one guy. Then Walsh and Cripps are the next two guys. Outside of them they ain’t crash hot imo. Do we need another forward ? Can it be coops? Or do we need to draft one ? Or get Bing?
Probably prefer Ronke head of Rowe. Definitely think Anderson would be worth a look.I'd chuck Ronke and Rowe in that mix of players. Need more small forwards to keep Butler honest, and Higgins to a lesser extent.
Anderson is quality and has the versatility to go forward. Would approve. Narkle seems destined for WA it seems.
Not keen on Anderson he’s been a disappointment at 2 clubs.Probably prefer Ronke head of Rowe. Definitely think Anderson would be worth a
Less of a disappointment than Narkle. Not keen on Anderson he’s been a disappointment at 2 clubs.
Narkle is at least kept out of a very good and settled side. Jed has had a heap of opportunity and never really made the step up.Less of a disappointment than Narkle.
Concentrate on some young mids at the draft, Anderson can be a meat and potatoes back up at Sandy.
Then again, watching the GF, Geelong made a point of moving the ball fast from player to player, no matter who had possession- nobody held on to the ball long enough for Sydney to put defensive moves into place anywhere across the ground.I was hyped on Carlton early in the season, I think they were playing fast exciting footy with really nice transition but as the year went on and depth was tested and pressure came they lost what ever sparkle that they had.
To me they are at a cross road, they are us in 2020 or they step up and start to move up the ladder. We both had a worrying lack of mental strength when finals were on the line. Flakiness is one intangible that can really cost a side any chance of going anywhere and both of us have it. Ross Lyon should be able to really stamp it out of us and if it costs a few careers that's fine. I think Carlton's top 5 is 10% to 15% better than ours but our depth of talent runs a bit deeper. Both clubs have half a dozen players that are under performing though so both have scope for rapid improvement.
I have mates who follow the Tigers and I'd say the number one thing that Hardwick gets right is his team's mental fortitude. So many games they've won through grit and determination even when other sides look better on paper. This year the Tigers were a very battered and uneven list with heaps of youth, somehow they managed to get over us and Carlton to play finals despite looking terrible for most of the year. Same with the Dogs. They looked depressed and even in sleep mode they managed to get to finals.
Another interesting change in footy this year was the way midfielder stats went down for the best sides. Carlton and Saints both had high possession counts while Geelong preferred to move the ball out fast. Geelong had the most top 100 players this year but Danger lead their mids in the 30s Guthrie was in the 60s. All the rest were forwards or defenders and most of them were tall ones.
It shows how footy has changed and over-possessing the ball doesn't equate to wins.
Why in the world would we bring in a 29 year old slow mid with poor skills to play for Sandringham?Less of a disappointment than Narkle.

Mature aged support for the young mids we'll have playing at Sandy once the draft is finished. Why in the world would we bring in a 29 year old slow mid with poor skills to play for Sandringham?

I am about to kill Bambi, but I'd actually prefer having him running around at Sandy than wasting another year waiting to see if Bytel makes it to AFL level.
Pick up Anderson, delist Bytel then have a crack at getting lucky with Pick 47.
That would be pretty bizarre list management IMO.Mature aged support for the young mids we'll have playing at Sandy once the draft is finished.
