How many highly talented 190cm South Australian midfielders are in next years draft?
I’d be keen to trade our 2023 first and 23 for the Phillipou pick and a later 2023 pick.
We still fill a vacancy with that later pick. Won’t be as good as a top ten pick, but we’ll already have one.
Kane McAuliffe is already 188cm 90kg and a real brute of a midfielder/defender might pay to keep an eye out for him next year.. Port Augusta lad playing with North Adelaide while schooling at Prince Alfred, captained their XV111 this season as a 17 year old....best keep an eye on him.

Nor at all... but we should be offering different deals depending on the player... & overall giving us enough flexibility for turnover each year.
The point is the list manager has signed up Soligo before playing, so you can't say that was a good deal in hindsight because he's doing well, whereas other players signed up before they played were poor deals.

We have zero list spots this year without delisting and moving a player to the rookie list and we only plan on selecting 2 players! Why? Because we haven’t been able to move on contracted players we no longer want.

As for next year, we are clamouring for draft picks to help us fill list spots and we aren’t accumulating decent picks, they are back end picks.

Nothing about what we have done for these 2 drafts is a strategy. It’s a calamity.
We have a full set of picks in 23, we're not 'clamouring for draft picks'.

I think the question is who are we interested in from this (reportedly weak) draft or DFA? By all reports, this draft is unlikely to go beyond the 3rd round.

If we delisted Murphy, Crouch and Berg for example this year, do we fill them with DFAs or later '22 draft (weak) picks?or keep those 3 spots for next year and take a couple of later picks we believe will be better than this year's late picks?

Signing up known average players for longer than necessary deals is worse than extending newly drafted talent.

We traded in 43 this year so we could have a pick for Max. But we don’t have a list spot yet for Max. We needed someone to be traded to create that list spot but we failed because no one wanted our contracted duds. Now we have to delist a player and move them to the rookie list.

It’s not that hard to comprehend, unless you’re trying to come to the rescue of the club again.

That's pretty unbelievable, there has to be more to it, gets plenty of games under Buckley in his rookie season and did pretty well then completely overlooked by McRae whilst playing decent VFL footy all year in only his 2nd season. Very odd.
And to think how long we keep our muppets on our list. Good list management in my view. In the Pies eyes they don’t see him making it so why waste time . Bring in someone else and roll again until you strike .

Phillipou is another one we’re going to regret if we don’t trade up and get him. He’s exactly what we need and he’s a South Australian.
I’m happy to have Rankine, but not having pick 5 anymore sucks. We need this guy.

There were/are things we could have done if we rated him.

This is by all accounts a terrible draft and he’s falling?

Not an amazing sign

Who says he’s falling?

Well, that’s a bigger question as to whether anyone actually falls or more becomes discovered about where someone has always sat.

But you think he’s still a top of the draft pick and not slipping down public expectations?

I think it’s entirely possible he was never that, but for the point of illustration I’m leaning into the general idea of his being less hot than he was

There's an article on Fox about 2023 free agents which says Crouch had offers but the Crows held him to contract 😟
youve cracked it

at the end of this year if he gets a contract, any contract we will get some compo, any compo whereas nobody was prepared to trade for him

this explains the two years!

Harry Himmelberg (Greater Western Sydney)

Originally a first-round pick out of the Giants Academy, Himmelberg is exactly the type of player the club needs to be keeping - a home-grown talent. With no go-home factor to worry about they’re every chance of doing so, and while the Giants are expected to pick up Aaron Cadman in the draft, Himmelberg remains a crucial forward cog. He finished third on the team for goals (22, behind Jesse Hogan and Toby Greene) and equal-first for marks in 2022. But as we’ve seen with players like Daniel McStay, forwards in free agency can command a pricetag that’s larger than their reputation, given their scarcity.

Looks so much better as a DEF this year .....would be great to have him join his brother at ADEL

Tom Doedee (Adelaide Crows)

He is viewed as a future captain but as Port Adelaide saw with Dougal Howard, impressive young defenders who lead the side at an early age aren’t sure things to remain at the club. As one of the best backs on the market, Doedee is sure to gain some interest. Turning 26 before the season begins, Doedee has clear links to Geelong - he grew up in Lara and went to St Joseph’s around the same time as the Cats’ Jack Henry - but there’s been no real chatter about an exit yet. He has played 71 career games across five seasons, having spent plenty of time in the SANFL early in his stint in Adelaide, and was the 11th-ranked key defender in the league this year by Champion Data.

HH or Cox?

He’s slipped only two places in Twomey’s rankings (realistically the most connected ‘draft expert’) in the last two months?

I’d barely say he’s descending greatly beyond the highest expectations, from a public perspective

How does a team that hasn't played finals for 5 years, and hasn't been above 14th for the last 3, have a "list squeeze"?
Do you want to turn 18 yo players over after 2 years ?

Do we need to factor in list balance / positional balance ?

All the Club has done, realistically, is taken minimal picks in a "thin" Draft .....other Clubs have traded out of this years Draft

Problem is ....people get seduced by all the pre-draft hype on draftee's ....and think we're missing out, by holding a "dud" player

Wasn't long ago, people were happy to delist / trade Fogarty .....Oh of course, no-one will admit to that now 🤣

You gotta give some time to young players to develop .....will Moose fall again to injury, or will 2023 be his year to breakout ? ......we all have diverse opinions on players

Not a full set of steak knives offers.

Trigger happy with some contracts.

Also, perhaps need a better spread of when players come out of contract.

I think next year we have half coming out of contract, so shouldn't have the same problem!
You should have at least 15 players coming out of contract every year - with the majority of players on contracts that are three years or less, you should typically see a third of your list coming out of contract.

From memory, we started this year with fewer out of contract players than normal, but instill think there was 10+. They've just mostly been young players we wanted to re-sign.

We may have a lot out of contract in 2023 currently, but it will only end up being six or so.

And no A grade midfield prospects.
Berry - 35 games ?
Soligo - 16 games ?
Pedlar - 5 games ?
Schoenberg - 46 games
Rankine ?
Taylor ?

No-one knows how much development is left .....or where these players flatten out

And remember, in these game tallies, you have the traditional 2nd year blues .....like Schoenberg

Nankervis, Cook, and Hately .....all deserve more time

Don't believe all the media clap-trap ......they know nothing about team lists .....zilch !

None are your typical A grade midfield prospects obtained through missing finals and getting top ten picks.

Eg the likes of Walsh, Anderson, Rozee, Brayshaw (Freo), Serong, JHF, McCluggage, Callaghan, Petracca, Oliver, Smith, Bont, Taranto, LDU, Parish.. multiple every year really.

Pedlar was pick 11 and Rachelle was top 5.

We need both of those to succeed.
