personally dont see a player in this draft at that range i would take this risk on...

Depends on how we structure the list. We have 4 rookies (Murray and Parnell + Seeds and McPherson)

We have 2 list spots to play with that can go either rookie or main list.

That depends on where you want to measure the "rebuild" start and end.

We had some higher end picks in '18 and '19 but didn't play a young team either of those years, and didn't really go hard at turning over the list until the 2019 off-season.

I'm not sure when hawthorn starting turning over heavily, but for the sake of simplicity, lets say that the rebuild is based on when the team is no longer in finals.

From 2002-2006, Hawthorn missed finals 5 consecutive years, and won 41 out of 110 games. In 2006, they won 9 games with a percentage of 86%

Crows 2018-2022, won 40 out of 105. In 2022, we won 8 game at 87%.


Do I think we will make finals in 2023?

No, we're probably too young, even if Nicks was decent. I can see us playing finals in 2024 though, and if we don't Nicks will be gone if he isn't already).

Can't really compare ourselves with the peak that Hawthorn had but in terms of progression and finals i think we're only one year behind.

Of course Hawthorn also brought in Hodge and a priority pick, plus had the potential goat coach.

Has our rebuild gone smoothly? No.

I don't think so, but it's actually still too early to tell. But it's certainly not time for panic stations.

Exactly. Good points made well. For Sanders to pluck this one off Horks situation is truly grasping and more than a little embarrassing :

• Horks missed finals the majority (3) of the 4 years before their lucky 2001 prelim final berth (another Power choke in a semi at Footy Oark). 2 of these years they were bottom 4 ie already banking high draft picks (inc Trent Croad who was the major part of Horks getting Hodge in 2001) used for their 2007/8 finals run. Not sure he mentioned this.
• The priority pick situation in those years was a true joke. Finish with 5 wins or less in ONE YEAR ONLY and guess what you get - a priority pick at the front of the queue (inc the year Horks got Roughy and Buddy). Crows finished 5th bottom in 2004 and there was always a clear “top 5” draftees. Effectively Buddy would have been a Crow if it wasn’t for this stupid rule.
• Horks traded out ageing KPP players (Hay, Rawlings and someone else) well beyond their peak with both illness issues (inc mental health for one player) getting them a number of first round picks. Clubs have smartened up since then and this has never been repeated to this extent again.
• even with all these high end draft picks - totally different to modern day rules - they still managed to draft champion spuds like Luke Brennan (8), Xavier Ellis (3), Beau Dowler (6), Mitch Thorp (6) Etc.

they got lucky mainly in one year. Roughy, Buddy and Lewis with rules that then were canned shortly afterwards. Totally incomparable era to modern age drafting (structural rules) and trading. We have blown one top 6 pick probably with McAsey but Pedlar was a freebie with this so must be accounted for. Horks blew top 6 draft pick after draft pick after draft pick back then for anyone actually following the game closely.
