I think Adelaidecrows meant it’s not that difficult to attract a South Australian that’s been a Crows fan all his life. It’s a special achievement in terms of recruiting to attract an elite talent that is neither.

Why did Lachie Neale choose Brisbane? Why have we never had a non South Australian come out and nominate us? We must have offered big $. We must have made promises of game time or position preference. Is it the city of Adelaide? Is it the people running the club? Is there anything that we can do to make it more attractive?
I’d wager that a big part of it is that 20 something year olds don’t won’t to live in Adelaide… particularly 20 something year olds who have grown up in the eastern states being fed a lifetime of “Adelaide is boring” tropes. And it’s kinda true. This city is great if you’ve got a young family and want to make life a hell of a lot easier for yourself, but unfortunately it doesn’t have a patch on what Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne have to offer for cashed up young folk. And from what I understand, outside business interests in Perth dwarf the potential here in Adelaide for making extra money outside the salary cap.

Meh. It is what it is. We just have to keep plugging away doing what we can. I don’t think it has much to do with the club not having a crack at getting good talent here… the harsh reality is young Victorians don’t want to move here when there are so many other opportunities in their home state.

Reckon Turner stays. Would be very strange not keeping him for one preseason
Yep, they drafted him with an injury so it was never about the "here and now". They obviously see AFL traits in Turner and he's only got serious about his footy comparatively recently. In an AFL system hopefully he will continue the upwards trajectory.

I've said before, but when Seedsman nominated us I was really hoping that might be a trend. Would be great to be an attractive place to play footy regardless of background. But I am comfortable with our current focus targeting elite SA talent each year provided it's actually working, which it finally is (Dawson, Rankine, to a lesser extent Hately). Make drafting SA boys scary and watch them slide more often. Port helping with that by picking up JHF too.

We need to be competing for finals and show we are going somewhere. A fair bit rests on Nicks selling the direction we are heading. Outside Burgess there really isn't anything unique or special about the football program.

I know there are positives but most clubs have positives.

Congratulations 2023 Margarey Medallist Matt Crouch.
You just know he’s gonna get 40 to 45 touches a week, absolutely dominate and the Sanfl flogs will still give the magarey to some hack from one of the original clubs!

“”

the problem is… at who’s expense?..

Sloane before he did his knee was already looking cooked.. considering it takes a player a whole year of footy before they show signs of getting back to their pre-knee injury best.. and sloane was already on the downward spiral.. I hardly see him being some valuable gun next season!..

And given he definately wont be there for our next finals campaign….
What do we achieve by giving him that position in front of our youth?.

Its just stupidity.. i would actually rather they gave the role to Keays over sloane.

Ultimately.. Pedlar, cook, rachele, taylor, nank, newchurch.. all these young guys should get a look in at that half forward/small forward role before a cooked rory sloane.

This club loves taking three steps backwards before finally taking one step forward!.
Keays is definitely more valuable … his work without the ball is exceptional

He covers off alot for our half forwards and other mids re their opponents

Maybe we can have a slightly unconventional midfield a bit similar to Richmond with Dusty and Bolton who tend to go to stoppages then push forward .. Rankine and Rachele are the guys for this

i guess at this point the hope can only be that matt crouch has one hell of a pre season and gets into the best condition of his career. hopefully he's insulted by the lack of interest

Literally playing for his career next year - with us or someone else. He has 1 year to impress. Hopefully he gets back to his 2020 form (last half of year)

McPherson, McAsey, Crouch, Seedsman & Hately all unlikely to get another contract.
Murphy, Strachan may also struggle.
Sloane, Walker will depend on their bodies.

That’s a lot and you can see why we held our 2023 picks.

I imagine Seedsman will effectively be off the list this year, still think he'll be forced into retirement by the concussion stuff. SSP rookie in his place

Out of the rest - Sloane, Crouch, Moose and McAsey should be certainties to be gone. Murphy, Jones, Strachan, Turner and Hately possibly, too, depending on how their year goes. Hell, even guys like Schoenberg and Worrell could request trades

We need to get Taylor and Fog signed ASAP.

Yeah, we could potentially have a mini-cleanout at the end of next season.

Near Certainties to Go:
Crouch
McPherson
McAsey (barring a massive turnaround to have a breakout year)

Retire:
Sloane
Seedsman (could very well be off the main list in the coming weeks anyway)
Tex is 50/50

Will Struggle To Stay On:
Murphy
Hately
Strachan (although ruck depth is important, let's see who we draft)
Turner

Re-Sign:
Fog
Taylor
Nankervis (a lot to like about him, hopefully he carries on)
McAdam? (could get decent currency but we don't have anyone else aside from Gollant who can play the medium, high-marking forward. I'd keep)
Worrell

Schoenberg needs a big season otherwise he'll be trade-bait. 2023 will be his 4th season on the list, so he needs to pull his finger out. I don't have high hopes for Jones staying on either.

It depends on a few factors...

List Structure - Clubs have the options of 36/6, 37/5, or 38/4 list structures. We were 37/5 this year, and appear likely to move to 38/4 for 2023 purely because we need the extra senior list position.

Inactive Players - Seedsman and Brown are both contracted for 2023. Brown has already announced his retirement, and Seedsman's announcement surely can't be far away. Depending on our 2022 salary cap situation, we may end up needing to move one (or possibly both) to the rookie list, before placing them on the inactive list. If that happens, then that's one (possibly 2) less rookie list positions available for filling via the RD - though we would be able to fill the vacancies via the PSSP or MSD after the players are moved to the inactive list.

Note that Parnell & Murray are both contracted for 2023, and will be remaining on the rookie list. Turner isn't contracted for 2023, but is likely to be retained - though he may find himself delisted and then re-signed during the PSSP.

Thanks V man. 👍

Should we have thrown buckets of cash at Jumbo Ravioli like Port?

I don’t get it. We tried hard for JHF, but he wanted Port. We tried for Bowes (pick 7), but he wanted Victoria.

Other than overpaying fat blokes, what else are we supposed to do?
I'm not sure we really tried that hard on JHF. We basically said we found out he might be wanting to return home, had some chats but Port were further down the track. And I believe he wanted Port because their offer wasa better.

Also think for a club that's sitting 14th, it shouldn't be that hard to identify more than one player to improve our list. Given the lack of turn over I'm hoping we believe we're ready to start winning more games and pushing for a spot in the 8.

Also, don't think Crouch getting 2 years last year is really that bad. As a free agent I'm glad we didn't go for 3-5 years like you'd typically expect. Nice short contract which gives him incentive to play the best footy he can to earn another contract or be moved on. The reward outweighed the risk in this on imo - 26 year old all australian and it only cost us a 2 year contract that wouldn't have been on big dollars I don't imagine.
