I had assumed that we are now effectively 37/2/2 and needing to delist/rookie Seeds to be able to take a 2nd pick in the National Draft. This is following our retirement/trades/de-listings and the required upgrade this year of Strachan and Butts who were picked up as Rookies in 2018 (2019-22 4 seasons as rookies).

However, Ben Keays was selected as a rookie in 2019 (2020-22 3 seasons) and I don’t think he has ever been upgraded to the Senior List. He doesn’t feature in any of the national draft rookie upgrade lists. Presumably he needs to be upgraded next year.

Therefore I assume that we are actually 36/3/2 with 2 main list spots & a single rookie list spots for 38/4/2. Demoting Seeds would only make sense if we want to keep the option of 3 selections in the ND (including the PSD) open.

Am I wrong?

Perhaps Sloane would drop back to the rookie list just it's not a "rookie" list at all.

Nope if you go back to Hamish's post draft presser he clearly stated that Keays was to be upgraded onto the main list...if you go to youtube or the club website you'll find it.

Ogilvie said he became a little emotional when he called Nankervis after he was selected.

The Bentleigh product was a retirement present to long-time scout Steve McCrystal, who had been with the Crows for 26 years, including the past nine in recruiting, and had “loved Nankervis from a long way out”.

“That was one we were riding pretty hard,” Ogilvie said.

“We get to send Steve off with one of his favourites, which was very pleasing.”

Adelaide redrafted Ben Davis at pick 4 with its only rookie selection on Friday.

The Crows also upgraded midfielder Ben Keays, who was runner-up in their best and fairest this year, to the senior list.
Earlier, the AFL rejected a pick swap between the Crows and Melbourne at pick 36, when Adelaide ended up taking Soligo.

The league was reported to have knocked back the deal because it was selections they had already dealt during this year’s trade period.

Adelaide traded a 2022 third-rounder with Melbourne so it could get back in the order to take Taylor.

Ogilvie said the club needed to add to its midfield but was not sure it was going to be able to do it on Thursday.

“I know everyone says it but we just didn’t think those two boys would get through to us,” he said.

“We always thought Soligo would go to Richmond and we probably thought Zac Taylor would go to Sydney, then when they were both there together, we kept riding it and got back in to make sure we could at least try to get one of them, if not two.

“It just worked out really, really well for us.”

Taylor can play as a small forward or on the ball, while Soligo has lined up at half-back, half-forward and in the middle.

Both won the best-and-fairests at their NAB League clubs this year.

“They’re not just one-position mids, they can play other spots,” Ogilvie said.

“Soligo is just pure football skill, genuine mid, more hard running power.

“Zac has got some speed – his speed’s lateral movement, the ability to get out.”

Well, I've been looking, and the "Inactive List" doesn't appear in either of the AFL's Rules or Regulations documents online. It seems all we plebs know about it is what's mentioned in the media.

Wonder if this was another example of the ∀FL changing rules on the fly that happens to stiff the AFC.

Thought the rule was put in to cover trades on draft night only and not trades during trade week?

You’re right. On their (Draftguru) individual page, Keays is still listed as a rookie but not on the team page.

If you look at this AFL page - Medical room: The full AFL injury list, R12 (and many other AFL pages) - they refer to inactive lists when (I'd reckon) they're talking about long term injuries.

Maybe both terms are used interchangeably these days**

THIS page from 2010 also refers to Inactive List with a different cause.

Anyone remember detail of the trade proposal knocked back by the AFL?

Reads like we wanted to slide back from that pick, possibly costing us Soligo.

Which would’ve been horrendous.

I wonder if the last brackets could be asked to be applied. If Adelaide and Seed know he's not playing another game, surely the AFL would consider it if we still fit inside the salary cap.

Probably not (not until the upcoming drafts are done and dusted) - there's also this rule from the doc:

26.7 Lodgement of Primary List (Rule 6.1)

If a Club intends to retain a Player who is on its Long Term Injury List at the end of the Football Year, the Club must transfer the Player from its Long Term Injury List to its Primary List at the time the Primary List is lodged with the AFL under rule 6.1 and maintain such Player on its Primary List until after the completion of the Rookie Draft Selection Meeting.

If the Player is still suffering a Long Term Injury after completion of the Rookie Draft Selection Meeting, the Club may again seek the approval of the General Counsel to include the Player on its Long Term Injury List in accordance with this Rule 26.2.

Players who go on the LTI list must remain there for a minimum of 8 weeks, hence this rule which is basically a sunset clause for LTI listings.

They're clearly different things. Gibbs wasn't injured, yet we placed him on the Inactive List (and signed Murray as a replacement, in the PSSP).
