Thing is, he will get paid regardless of whether he plays again or not. At least for the one season. No-one is giving him another contract after that, no matter how great 2023 goes. It's just too big a risk.I can understand the want to continue playing footy. I highly doubt they'll ever be paid that well ever again.
IMO, it's not worth the risk. Just one more unlucky hit and his quality of life would be down the drain. He's still got another good 50-60 years ahead of him.
Given what we’ve seen with Shane Tuck, Paul Green and Danny Frawley with CTE.. among numerous other sportsmen around the world…I can understand the want to continue playing footy. I highly doubt they'll ever be paid that well ever again.

Are you sure about this? So if Crouch gets moved to rookie list another club can pay him 100k and Crows pay the difference to full contracted amount? Doesn’t make much sense to me - surely the acquiring club picks up the existing contract?There are two options...
Firstly, there's the delist/re-draft option. Strachan stands a 99% chance of being poached. Seed or Crouch, considerably lower. There are no contract/salary implications (other than being able to exclude part of their salary from the cap), provided we re-draft them. If someone gazumps us, then we have to pay the difference between their 2023 AFC contract, and whatever contract they sign with their new club.
Secondly, there is a window for moving players from the senior list to the rookie list - but it's between the ND and RD. We can't use this window to create senior list vacancies for extra ND selections. As far as I can tell, this window is only useful for clubs going with a 37/5 or 36/6 list structure - not 38/4 as we appear likely to be in 2023.
Yes. It's covered under Section 18 of the AFL Rules document (No Unjust Enrichment).Are you sure about this? 18. No Unjust Enrichment
Where an AFL Club employs a Player whose name has been delisted from the List of another AFL Club and where the terms of employment of such Player provide that the average of all payments which the Player would be entitled to earn over the whole of the period of the new contract is:
(a) the same or greater during the balance of the years in which the Player was delisted by his previous AFL Club or the year following his delisting (if the provisions of items 17(a)(iii) and 17(a)(iv) of this Schedule C apply), no termination payment shall be payable; or
(b) less during the balance of the years in which the Player was delisted by his previous AFL Club or the year following his delisting, the termination payment payable shall be reduced by the average payments which the Player would be entitled to earn under his new contract for the balance of the years in which the Player was delisted and the year following his delisting (if the provisions of items 17(a)(iii) and 17(a)(iv) of this Schedule C apply).
Accordingly:
(i) any amount payable by an AFL Club under items 17(a)(iii) and 17(a)(iv) of this Schedule C shall not be payable until 31 March in the year following that in which the Player’s name was deleted from the relevant AFL Club’s List;
(ii) any payment by an AFL Club of any amount purportedly in accordance with items 17(a)(iii) and 17(a)(iv) of this Schedule C shall be strictly without prejudice to the rights of the AFL Club under this item 18;
(iii) an AFL Club shall be entitled to be repaid any amount paid to a Player in excess of a Player’s actual entitlement; and
(iv) where a Player fails, refuses or neglects to repay any amount due to his former AFL Club in accordance with this item, within 7 days of a written demand for such payment, the AFL Club which has re-employed the Player shall pay the amount due to the former AFL Club and the Player’s entitlement to payments under his new contract shall be reduced accordingly.

If he was/is leaving teams would have a set transition period which would happen after the upcoming draft/trade period (in terms of Hamish leaving and his replacement coming in), not just completely trading out of it.this is a very wild conspiracy theory, and maybe wishful thinking, but if you’re going to replace your head recruiter the best way to do it is to trade out of a weak draft and get the new person in straight after
Yep that was obvious to "some" of us...not all.Reid on the "Sensible Crow" podcast, made a point that trading #23 was for two reasons. One on points for Max Michalanney, but also opening flexibility across two drafts, and the ability on draft night this year to be able to trade back in should there be the desire too to grab someone that slips down.
And due to our list management we didn’t have the flexibility to pick him up. Good going JustinJustin Reid also confirmed Josh Carmichael had an 18 month contract on his head at the mid season draft.
Interesting in that Podcast with Reid .....after Reid left, there was a discussion on whether Rankine could play a lot of midfieldSensible Crow is a good listen, especially when he has guests on.
Interesting in that Podcast with Reid .....after Reid left, there was a discussion on whether Rankine could play a lot of midfield
This discussion irks me .....firstly the discussion compared Rankine and Shai Bolton .....the person saying Bolton is better suited to midfield because of his aerobic capacity
What irks me, is people comparing a player 18 months younger and 42 games less than Rankine ..... no account is made for these differences and further more, Bolton has really struggled with his tank, which has restricted him to a fwd role, until the last 2 seasons
And who says Rankine has a poor tank ....that'll restrict his Mid Minutes .....certainly Brenton Phillips doesn't think Rankine's Aerobic capacity is poor ......so what is actually stopping him from playing Midfield ?
Rankine at 181cm is only a centimeter shorter than Shoenberg .....and a cm taller than Soligo ?
Would I?...we don't always agree...just mostly.Huh - Modern Artillery is Micah Hann. There you go.
You'd like his selections in the BigFooty Phantom, Mutineer.
Tom Wyman is no fool when it comes to judging young talent Wayno.
Some of Tom and the draft boards Micah Hann ( ModernArtillery )
That was Tom on the podcast with him interviewing Phillipou.It wasn't the Podcaster ....I assume it was a call-in ??
I highly value ModernArtillery 's POV ......he has a very levelled assessment of draftee's ....agree or disagree, his POV is very logical
Then I still disagree with that POV on RankineThat was Tom on the podcast with him
Haha I just had a look...He must be a mind reader amongst his many other talentsHuh - Modern Artillery is Micah Hann. There you go.
