Agree. He’s a bigger body, but the emergence of Hately has helped nullify the need for a bigger body on the inside IMO

Classy users and decision makers (on the inside and outside) should be our priority IMO, whether that be through trade/FA or the draft
Exactly my thinking. Hately looks like he could be that bigger body midfielder we need & we have a need for class & speed.

That's a pretty long deal for Dale, is he worth it?
Yep ... vital for their launch out of defensive 50 with what is a laser like field kick . His penetration x accuracy over the last season and a half has been league best . Plenty of teams would have stepped up with a 5 yr deal .

Bailey Dale re-signing = bugger.

From looking like delist material to playing a few solid games vs Dunkley is a huge difference though.

Not sure where I stand with Dunkley. I think he'd be an absolute magnet as the primary midfielder for a team and a super reliable workhorse type player. Obviously would prefer a speedy, classy, consistent finisher in the midfield like everyone else but how many of them exist / are on the market / would come to Adelaide? Someone like Dunkley might be the best we can get.

I’m all for Dunkley on the proviso Laird goes back and obviously MC traded, I think the only way we’re getting a classy elite kicking full time midfielder is through the draft and we’re going to have a pick at the pointy end again this year which helps! Dunkley can rotate forward and hit the scoreboard for added flexibility and to still allow Hately ample midfield minutes. Doubt it happens though.

Dunkley is a talent upgrade but not sure he’s the type of player we need.
Did you just answer your own question there?.

Talent upgrades are exactly what we fukn need right now.

Getting them in any form is bloody hard. So we should absolutely be looking at Dunkley if available..

But I do agree with others that it is on the proviso that we move Laird back to half back and piss mcrouch off altogether..

Exactly..
The fact Dunkley can also hit the scoreboard is the other massive plus..

Look at our main three midfielders, our “guns”.. laird, keays and crouch. How many goals do they kick.. sweet fa..

This year;
Laird - 2
Keays - 3
Mcrouch -0

Faaark me that is an utterly deplorable return from your best midfielders. And dont bother looking to previous years as they aren’t any better..

Josh Dunkley has kicked 10 so far this season.. so double the amount of these three put together!..

That alone tells you why we should up to our eyeballs in josh if he is making noise about wanting to join his girlfiend in Adelaide..

Have you got the relevant 2022 heat maps of the named players, that would be interesting to know.

To be fair to Keays, he's having the shots, he just can't kick straight to save his life. He's had 9 scoring shots, for 3.6... and I have no idea how many attempts that failed to score completely.

Laird & Mrouch... not so much.

Christmas Wish list:

Grundy on a Salary Dump + trade ROB.
Jason Horne 2022 Crows 1st plus 2nd
Josh Dunkley Crows 2023 1st

Trade Matt Crouch

If Collingwood are paying part of Grundy's contract then maybe. BUT, Grundy looks pretty cooked and ROB, for his failings, has more years left than Grundy.

Will require more than that for JHF. I suspect 2 first round picks minimum.

Can we get Dunkley as a free agent? I don't know the contract status.

Trade Matt Crouch 100%. Not sure the market is going to be strong though...

Dunkley one year away from FA eligibility

Dunkley in McHenry and Crouch out. Gets my tick of approval. Dunkley can play both of their roles and actually kick goals.

Our 2023 1st rounder which, let's be honest, is still likely to be a Top 10 pick, would be enough to get him out of the Bulldogs if he wanted to leave. He's OOC so technically we could do the same thing we did with Dawson and play hard ball

It would be comparable to the compensation they'd receive if he left next year anyway.

I still feel three years in we haven't answered enough questions about who is going to make it and who isn't. I'm not even sure Nicksy knows who his best 25 or so are.
This x 1000

Everything is still fully dependent on who played well last week, who had a good SANFL game etc

Reactive rather than an underlying plan

Well, I can remember one against Freo.

I think that's the nature of rebuilds. Those 18 year olds might be 21 now, and you still don't know THAT much more.

I reckon McGuiness was in better form when we ditched him and for all the talk about his suitors, nobody grabbed him. We seriously need to have a chat with Sloane and transition him to life after football in 2024. If we are a brave club and not a sentimental club, he will get a tap on the shoulder, otherwise we are playing this competition for the wrong reason.

There is a chance that 3/4 of a season without the bash and crash does him the world of good and he returns in really good form. But if he doesn’t, recent history hasn’t been great in terms of players knowing their time is up. None of Thommo, Dougie, Talia or Lynch had the faintest clue they were done. Only Otto knew when it was time and called it himself.

and Mackay - don't forget Mackay. Wasn't the rumor at the time that if he wanted to go again, the club would have given him another contract?

I really feel that there is a HUGE amount riding on what we are planning to do with Riley Thilthorpe.

Is he;
  • a permanent stay at home forward
  • a permanent high centre half forward
  • a high centre half forward who pinch hits in the ruck
  • a first choice ruck who drifts forward

This drastically shifts what we should be aiming to recruit.

If he is more a forward, and we are backing in Fog (and Gollant), we desperately need more midfield class.

If he is more a ruck, we desperately need a tall, powerful forward (Lemmey / Scully) and shouldn't be sacrificing any draft capital for mature players, when the bones of our next premiership tilt is still so up in the air.

I’d like to subscribe to your newsletter.

I know Thilly is a very young developing tall but his trajectory since kicking 5 on debut has me worried.
