If Willie Rioli goes to the preseason draft and he's cited family reasons for SA, should we take him?

We should be making it clear we are interested.

Tom Doedee is the obvious one. Right age bracket for a lot of teams, a pretty good player when in form, but playing in a niche role that isn't really important to us now, rather is only important to a team who finished top 4 this year and feels an experiened intercept defender was one of the reasons they didn't win it this year, much like topping up with a small forward or a ruckman. Only player on our list in the right spot on the market value vs team importance graph. He certainly looks less and less like the future captain, which was the main reason to retain him.

The other is Shane McAdam. Realistically he's too old to still be an important contributor to our next premiership push, while at the same time his most recent season, his forward x factor, and Fremantle's current list position mean he's never going to be more valuable in trade than he is right now.

Some might say Smith, but I think that ship sailed 2 years ago, other clubs will want him but won't be willing to pay anything for him anymore given the age.

I can't really think of anyone else worth putting in that glass window. The rest have not enough value, or are players we want and should want to retain.

Players with a proven fringe level ceiling should be sent with a pick to get a better pick. Those players shouldn’t be locked into the list and bottom end of the 22. We should be cycling through them whikst looking to upgrade them. Currently Murphy would be the poster child. It doesn’t matter if he only moves a second or third up a few spots.

I'd like to keep our 23 picks. With the retirements coming next year we should be well placed to land a big fish. Free agency would be good but having some draft capital will be needed if we want to trade.

Retirements? Tex 50:50, he’ll get an extension if output warrants and Sloane is all but a certainty to ask for an extension. Seedsman highly likely though. 1 definite retirement is all I can see.

The problem is, this philosophy works when you are a top 8 side. But as a bottom side our fringe players are even worse depth for others.

It'd be more list spots for us. I'd get rid of Newchurch and Rowe to make it work.
Getting rid of Rowe works..

Getting rid of Newchurch doesnt free up a list spot.. as his list spot can only be used for a Cat B player.

And Rioli isnt one.. and there is none of them on the horizon currently..

Pedantic. Okay COO

You keep doing you - find negativity in every thing the club does, keep banging on about the goal being to just get into the top 8 - then rinse and repeat

It’s hardly pedantic, a CEO is different to the head of finance when running a football club.

But the fact you had to deflect “find negativity in everything” is just cringe and it’s bullshit. It’s a myth made up by the Mary Poppins crew who resort to it when someone criticises their posts.

Speaking of Mary Poppins, where is Mego Red?

It doesn’t matter. What a guy like Murphy brings is barely different to a kid in his first few games in his second year. So even if we don’t get an upgrade on a pick, we still need to be cycling through that type of player. The bottom handful of players selected need to be developing kids, not fully developed mid agers or seniors.

Facts matter. If you’re going to list someone’s job to make a point then you need to be accurate. The fact is that Silvers was another in a long line of key appointments where they arrive I go their role with us with L plates on.

You reckon our list that we’ve publicly stated we’re locked into is top few stuff? There’s nothing that suggests that our overarching strategy has changed in any way at all.

Agree with this. It’s the David Mackay effect. Pumping game after game into a borderline player rather than spreading those games amongst rookies.

If McAsey is on a rumoured $450K-$500K I'm not surprised he doesn't have a ton of suitors. Wait until that contract runs out before you take a flier on him.
If true then McAsey is being paid more than 2x the opposing team’s entire salary cap to perform as a spud in the SANFL.

If we are being pedantic, the CFO is the finance guy. The COO runs the organisation. Bit of finance, bit of legal, bit of IT, fair bit of fixing sh*t that goes wrong.

Given Age, trying to fill his pocket, seeing his condition, where we sit I’ll give it pass thanks

I'm not too fussed either way, leaning towards not being interested in him if it means we play Pedlar/Taylor ahead of him.

Just the chance to get a player that doesn't cost a draft pick needs to be looked at.
