Have you forgotten his 2017 season before he re-signed in 2018 and he is the captain so will be the highest paid player at the club.
Ok hear me out but if (and I know it’s a big if) Collingwood are desperate to get Grundy’s $1m x5 years contract off their books and we were prepared to pay all of it (which should be possible for us at this stage) would they pay us their first rounder this year (say pick 15 +/-) as salary dump compensation to do the deal? This would allow them to target FAs like McStay and maybe even keep De Goey.
If they were and we could then trade ROB for a second rounder then we could effectively give up $400K pa in salary cap (Grundy $1m less ROB ~$600K) and get a 1st and 2nd round pick in return and have a superior ruckman.
Those picks could make the difference in having trade capital for JHF and or Rankine.
Worth getting creative for I reckon.
That’s about what it would cost to dump his contract
From what I've heard a few years back, Grundy loves Melbourne, he is older now so who knows. What's the consensus on what JHF would cost this year?
Surely the offer last year was a one time deal, but he is still contracted.

There's too much noise. Reckon he's ours.
I'm unsure if JHF is playing below himself at the moment because he's unhappy with his situation or if he was just massively overrated because he played every week in the SANFL when all the Vic kids were shut down with Covid.
An interesting look at average age / games played by club. Click the club in the legend to just show that club
Why would North trade him?
Even at the end of next year they'd be better off tanking to finish last again and re drafting him if he decides not to re-sign
Melbourne in a good spot for the next 5 years.

No.That's the real question. Not sure he'd be top 10 in the NAB Rising Star currtently. Was he overrated?
Not if you watched him play for South, he was BOG in a Prelim. That's the real question. Not sure he'd be top 10 in the NAB Rising Star currtently. Was he overrated?
Melbourne are a club that aren't afraid to use future picks to get players now.Melbourne in a good spot for the next 5 years.

We need to be less precious about our future first, too much hand wringing that it could be a high pick. Yes it could be but there's no guarantee it will turn into a great player, plenty of number 1 picks are just ok footballers.
If you can use it to lure home a JHF or Rankine - just do it!
Are you allowed to buy picks like that?Ok hear me out but if (and I know it’s a big if) Collingwood are desperate to get Grundy’s $1m x5 years contract off their books and we were prepared to pay all of it (which should be possible for us at this stage) would they pay us their first rounder this year (say pick 15 +/-) as salary dump compensation to do the deal? Is there a precedent?
I'm convinced North will want to bolster their current playing stocks more than look for extra draft picks. What's an example of that occuring in AFL history?
North tank again and they'll spend all year listening to people plan for them to be kicked out of the league.
Not sure another hopeless season makes sense for them - and not sure the legal challenge that would surround them re-derafting a player that doesn't want to be there would be worth it.
If you have elite talent that want to come home and are available, then you make the moves now to get them. You never know what the future might hold. Better to grab it while you can.Melbourne are a club that aren't afraid to use future picks to get players now.

And? Even top midfielders take a while to learn to break the tag and also come back from foot injuries and these contract is what happen to FA players, have you seen all the 5+ years contract given by other clubs to other players who aren't even the captain. We all do but that isn't the point. By his contract year he had shown he couldn't shake a tag and then had a foot injury that made him even slower. The guy is a fan favourite and he got his when it came to contract time but it is more than fair to say he has not delivered on the contract he sought from us. That is on us, we bent and accepted his terms for a good many reasons but for him to suggest he wants to go on in 2024 (even next year) scares me because he won't want to drop from 900k to 250k, he will still want to be there about as the highest paid player and he just isn't that player anymore.
Except Grundy is going to cost less because he’s in contract than if he was out. What player of Grundy, Horne-Francis and Rankine is out of contract?
I know the answer, some need to lower their expectations.
Obviously none. However, Rankine is rumoured to on the move. Essendon offering huge money. May be gettable. What player of Grundy, Horne-Francis and Rankine is out of contract?

If a player is actively saying a club wouldn't have won more if they are fit/selected, they're mentally finished.
Good on Sloane for aiming to last as long as he can. I can't see it going anywhere other then a retirement at the end of 2023, but it's a better situation then a lad who knows it's his last season and is just here for the paycheck in the SANFL.

Grundy we know is on big $$ and Collingwood have found a replacement. It's not about his contract but more the salary dump from Collingwood.
JHF is contracted, but has already declared he wants to go home.
All 3 have special circumstances that might make them gettable, beyond simply having contracts.
Maybe.
It is of course just speculation and hope from our end.
Grundys contract is the only reason they want to get rid of him.Grundy is contracted
Horne-Francis is contracted
And you think we should put our head in the net for Grundy?Grundys contract is the only reason they want to get rid of him.
