Oh well, Southerners are entitled to wonder whether the world truly needs two forms of rugby.
League is the only one I can stand, personally.

According to Hunter Fujak’s book “Code Wars” there was a time not too long ago when Union was seriously close to being the second biggest code in Australia.

The 2019 Wallabies crowd which holds the Perth Stadium record sports crowd, was 2 months after the State of Origin game that year.

This year the Wallabies game was one week after State of Origin. Also this weekend Perth just set a Super Netball record crowd as 13,902 watched the Fever win the grand final at Perth Arena.

But, I am still disappointed the Wallabies didn’t atleast crack 50,000.

There was certainly a time when union was doing better, but I reckon Fujak is wrong in that assertion.
In fact, a few of the observations he makes are a little bit iffy.

meehhh..... the AFL Grand Final isn't even number 1 on that list. And that was the most impossible thing to get a ticket for there.

Well the AFL GF was limited to the normal capacity of 61,266.

The wallabies game with the record attendance had a greater capacity with some of the 5,000 temporary additional seats set up for the rectangle format.

The tourism value of Optus would bring a smile to WA Tourism.

But not the government it pays for these events.
Tourists traditionally don't spend a lot of money in Perth and the government only gets part of the GST back so the overall economics don't add up
but yes, it sounds nice and it would be nice if we didn'y have to pay for it.
The airlines probably appreciate it too, but that doesn't help W.A.

There is a queue for many sporting events - you'd hope OUR money would be well spent.
I look at the F1 event which is renewed by both sides of politics, & who when in opposition, CRITICISE.

'Netball reaffirmed its place as a “tier one sport” with the Suncorp Super Netball grand final boasting record crowd and audience viewing numbers to cap a stunning debut season on Fox Sports.
The West Coast Fever’s dominant 70-59 victory over minor premiers Melbourne Vixens had an average of 170,000 viewers last Sunday with 67 per cent of the audience attributed to streaming via Kayo Freebies.'

“To help grow audiences right around Australia, we have brought Netball to the masses via Kayo Freebies every Sunday and netball has benefited from the growth of Kayo over the past six months - particularly throughout the finals which is a strong indicator for the future.”

Rugby did go through a bit of a purple patch from around 1991 (Wallabies won the world cup) to around 2006.
In that period, they became fully professional, Super Rugby started and for a good decade got decent attendances and ratings on Fox, especially for the Australian teams. Of course, the top three Australian teams had periods of success around this time as well, that helped.
Once they started mucking around with the formula, expanding, more games in far flung places, coinciding with a poor Wallabies team, Rugby did take a bit of a nose dive, and will probably never recover now.

That’s the era Hunter Fujak was talking about, his figures showed it was definitely on the cusp of a big increase in market share, and his conclusions are pretty much the same as yours.

Except rugby was only number two in NSW to the other rugby and now it's not even that.
Even that position was arguable because club rugby was only slightly better attended than the SFL.

Well his figures told a very different story but I’m out of town right now so you’ll have to wait with bated breath till I can pull his book off the shelf and reveal all.

They never really could have said that it came close to rugby league though, even if it had a larger following outside NSW and Queensland (and still probably does).

Well, what figures - crowd attendance, average crowd attendance, participation, professionalism ?

NSW participation - soccer.......rugby league..rugby union.Australian Football.
NSW attendance - rugby league...Australian Football....rugby union.
NSW average attendances - Australian Football.... rugby league...rugby union.soccer
NSW media attention - rugby league..................rugby union....Australian Football.soccer.

Here is the probably rugby's most famous ground. See the tiny grandstand and limited seating.

I told you, you're just going to have to wait. Patience, my son.

If you look at the crowd in Lions tours, Australian supporters are far outnumbered by lions supporters - for international tourism it's one of the biggest drawing events, way more than even Ashes tours.

If Rugby Australia are smart they should schedule the Melbourne match at the MCG rather than Marvel for the 2025 tour as they'd have no trouble selling it out.

That's Coogee Oval isn't it? I'd say it's more well known as a cricket ground (home of Randwick Petersham) than Rugby

One of the problems Rugby Union faces in a nutshell:
'Given the cold shoulder by Brad Thorn at the Queensland Reds, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto has been called into the Wallabies from club rugby for their third Test decider against England.'

'While he was a surprise omission from last year’s Spring Tour after leaving the camp for the birth for his first child, Salakaia-Loto fell out of favour at the Reds after signing with Saints earlier in the year.'

'He has since being playing for Souths in Brisbane’s club rugby competition.'

At the same time RA is busy shooting itself in the foot:
'... the decision not to do any media opportunities was a baffling one ahead of the series decider at the SCG, particularly with the Test not yet sold out and the match shaping as one of the biggest in Australian rugby in years.

A Wallabies spokesperson said they had planned to do one, but after English Premiership side Aston Villa, who are staying at the same hotel on the Gold Coast, pulled out of a combined press opportunity they too pulled the pin.

Regardless, with the code battling for media attention and State of Origin to dominate headlines ahead of Wednesday’s series decider, it was an odd look.'

No surprise.
