I'm not confident that as a club and specifically in relation to list management that we properly understand risk and reward. Simply saying "too many red flags" sounds like a lazy approach which either by design or in practical terms will exclude many (most?) highly talented but not choirboy type prospects.

If you retrofit this apparent approach to many past/current champions of the game how many would we seemingly put a line through.

He will cost the club a fortune in trade and salary so the risk is very high on that front. If we're prepared to offer Rankine a large contract and a top 5 pick to get him but aren't willing to do that for JHF then you have to think the club would have good reasons.

What's important is how good are they at standing in line formation clapping off the 300 game champion with a bad family.

And they would have to be red flags run up the pole this year, considering the reported ridiculous offer we made for him last year. Has it been verified that we actually did make such an offer? I still can't believe it.

So we'd need to trade Rowe AND a future pick just to get a late pick back. Why exactly would we do that?

If it happens it's because we want it to. He is worth a late pick at best. Receiving a late pick on its own doesn't hold a lot of value if you only have a few list spots available. So it will likely be a late pick upgrade swap or swap for future late picks etc.

If we really are pushing Rowe out then Rowe and a future 5th for the dogs 3rd this year would be ok as that would be valuable points for a MM bid and its such a late pick next year that its virtually irrelevant to us

Or is it just pragmatism from the club? I'm not sure we compete on an even playing field here.

Tex has a beer at the footy .... Front page (like picture taking up a full page) news.

Bailey Smith does .... well quite a lot of things.... crickets.
Young Port player does .... .... crickets.

Between offended Port supporters willing to dob in anything and offended media willing to show it and smear the club as much and as hard as they can, the club isn't in the greatest position is it? (Still I do admit, we haven't helped ourselves over the years, slow to realise the world after wayne jackson was a LOT different).

Apparently Rowie said that McAsey is on $450k, jesus.

Early year two signing, pick 6 and had played 10 games in the previous year. Considering overpaying talented kids is a pretty common method to retain them in the lean years, it's rather possible he was able to extract that much.

Of course. How else are we paying the salary floor?

I was doing some estimates earlier and if we we're paying players fairly based on performance we should have a lot of guys on below average wages ($390k) in addition to rookie salaries.

The number I came up with was $2-2.5 million under the salary cap this year, and this was including stuff like paying O'Brien $600k and Sloane $750k. So we'd have to overpay our players by at least $1.5 million

We Balked @ 450k for Levers second contract. That figure @ mark was touted as unprecedented for a young player with that level of experience at our club.

I realise times have changed, but fmd if that's true.

Surely not. 450k is slightly above average AFL wage.

And he's a pick 6 who had a solid year one, playing for a shit club who has nothing to spend salary cap on.

Absolutely possible as by that point, we viewed him as a key part of our future.

800k, not 450k.

Lever contract negotations was funnily enough, near identical to Rankines. We refused to go above 650k, Melbourne offered 800k. Lever then tried to convince us to up that offer through the media and we balked.

A solid year one?

You jest surely.

I know McAsey is on your shitlist (and you're way too petty to praise a player you don't like), but 10 AFL games in a young players first year after being drafted is always a solid season.
