Wouldn't be the first or the last promising athlete to not meet their potential because of overbearing parents.

Hell, who can forget Al "money man who loves bad bitches" Lever and his public sooks every time Jake got dropped. Hard to see how that didn't already exacerbate a fragile situation.

- Drink driving, like Coleman medalist Charlie Curnow or 4x premiership player, 3x All Australian Luke Hodge?

- Domestic violence, cheating and drug abuse like 7x All Australian, 2x premiership player Wayne Carey, often called one of the best players of all time?

- Drug use, like 6x All Australian, Brownlow medal and premiership winning Ben Cousins; or more recently the All Australian small forward Tyson Stengle?

- Coming from a dodgy family, like dual Brownlow medalist, 8x All Australian, 2x premiership player and arguably one of the best players of all time, Gary Ablett Jr; or 3x premiership, 3x Norm Smith, 4x AA, Brownlow medalist Dustin Martin?

- Punching people many times, like 750 goal, 4x All Australian, premiership player Barry Hall?

- Giving heroin to a teenager leading to her death, like the 6th highest goal kicker of all time, 3x Coleman medalist, 4x AA Gary Ablett Sr?

- Assaulting people, stealing and sexual misconduct like 2x Coleman medalist, 3x All Australian Brendan Fevola?

We Balked @ 450k for Levers second contract. That figure @ mark was touted as unprecedented for a young player with that level of experience at our club.

I realise times have changed, but fmd if that's true.

Overpaying young talent is a no brainer. We got it wrong in the past, $450k for Fish was the right call. It’s the price you pay to secure the investment.

I know McAsey is on your shitlist (and you're way too petty to praise a player you don't like), but 10 AFL games in a young players first year after being drafted is always a solid season.

The guy struggled big time in his AFL games. He was thrown in the deep end way too early. Then he was dropped and hasn't played since.

I wouldn't call that a solid 1st year.

I'm comfortable with the overall list payment structure currently. We have lots of youngsters on smaller contracts and seniors on larger ones. By the time our star draftees emerge fully, retirements at the top end will provide cap space to properly remunerate those deserving.

Over-protective parents are common, but they are unlikely to be as controlling and influential forever. A kid who gets drafted in the first round becomes overnight famous and wealthy and surrounded by highly motivated and impressive new people. It would be hard for any parent to maintain their influence, much less control, in those circs. Also, how many teenagers do you know that love having controlling parents? Most are gagging for some independence and freedom. Crazy parent as manager would be more of a worry tho I guess.
Edit: I have no idea about this kid or his family, I am just responding to the runours above and saying give the kid some credit

Idk who brought it up first but something about him and his family being massive port supporters and not wanting to be drafted by the crows. If you don't know this for a fact then just shut up.

Everything on here needs to be taken with a grain of salt and Volbeat mentioned this in his original comment..

Not sure its that big a deal really.. and discouraging people from bringing rumours to the board is not something we should do regardless.

Like I said though.. pick 5, and thus any chance of Phillipou, is more than likely gooooorrne anyway. If we dont give it directly to the Suns we will, at the very least, be spliting it for other picks to give them..

So its funny people are still mentioning the lads name!
