Hey guys, word around the campfire is that Joel Smith has signed a new deal for 2 years. Don’t be shocked when details are released previously.

If Melbourne cough up a 1st round pick for an ageing Brodie Grundy with a bung ankle then I'll be incredibly angry. Getting Grundy at all in a mind boggling decision. And the fact that we are even interested in him is incredibly unsettling as it shows that someone (most likely Goodwin) has a terrible read on our list.

So let me get this straight, we are going to lose one of the best young players in the league (Jackson) for unders (most likely 2 first rounders) and then potentially spend half of our compensation on a ruckman who does not solve any of our problems? A guy that cannot play any other position (other than ruck) and is considered behind Darcy Cameron? What a great idea. Also, let's play arguably the best ruckman of all time (Gawn) in the forward line for longer, reducing his impact on games in the ruck. Let's play him in a position where he has shown to be one of the worst shots at goal in the afl. Smart. Missing goals is no biggie. Momentum in games don't matter.

Even better, let's pay Grundy 700k and think that we're getting value because the pies pay 300k only to realise that 700k is actually 1.1million a season because it's a 5 year contract and he likely only has 3 years left. The fact that no-one is even mentioning this is highly concerning. Not just from our list management but also from supporters who say 'pies will pay 300k'. Completely overlooking that Grundy only has 3 seasons left maximum.

Tom Mcdonald and Ben Brown are cooked. JVR is showing promise as an undersized key forward. We realistically need to hit the draft hard for 2 years and pick up 5-6 key forwards and hope that at least 2 of them stick. This solution of Grundy and Gawn is the opposite of a solution.

Agree with old mate's premise that Grundy would be a dumb move from us, but boy that guy knows how to melt and present arguments in the most obnoxious and pig-headed way.

Almost makes me want to chase Grundy now just for future melts 🤣

Mr. "we're not in our premiership window" claiming Goodwin has a terrible read on our list :$

Ive been thinking this for a while but wasn't brave enough to say it.

Okay so the only article I could find that even suggested a first round pick for Grundy was this one.

Bolded parts are interesting.
MELBOURNE

Grundy was “blown away” by the Demons when he met with key figures at the club earlier this month, according to SEN’s Sam Edmund, as one of two clubs his camp has been reported to have met with along with the Giants.

It’s seen Melbourne emerge as the frontrunner for the star big man in a move that would pair the best two rucks of the last decade in Grundy and Max Gawn in a scary prospect for rivals as young gun Luke Jackson is expected to request a trade away from the club at season’s end to return to Western Australia and join Fremantle.

Although Melbourne reportedly doesn’t necessarily view Grundy as a priority and could target a younger, cheaper option, Demons coach Simon Goodwin has said the club is keen to play with two rucks next year.

Jackson’s departure clearly holds the key to the Demons’ pursuit of Grundy as well as what Melbourne could get back from Freo in a trade. This is factoring in Melbourne’s first draft pick — currently the Swans’ Pick 17 tied to the Dees — may not be enough to entice the Pies in a trade — whereas the Dockers hold Pick 14.

Pending on how the Pies’ pursuits of their other targets go, Melbourne’s frequently used medical sub Toby Bedford (not that it’d let him go lightly) as well as Adam Tomlinson and Sam Weideman are other names that could interest Collingwood.

The entire thing reads like pure speculation. While I like the suggestion of sending our first round pick from this year currently held by Sydney. I would also happily package up Weideman, Bedford and Tomlinson to the Pies for Grundy. :)

picks outside the first round have a 60% fail rate based on the last 10 years of data across all clubs so 5-6 key forwards drafted becomes 2-3 forwards. We're not going to hit on every pick in the draft.
Key forwards usually take like 4-5 years to come on properly. If we're drafting for the future you might take a couple each year but if we need a KPF now then we're going to need to trade for them or hope JVR is ahead of the curve.

When Jackson leaves we’ll have exactly one ruckman on our list. TBH at the right price we should be going for Grundy. Unless we can get our hands on another ruckman that’s fairly agile and can play along side Gawn. There won’t be many floating around the state leagues so it’ll be poaching someone.

But we have to make the most of this list. And if that means going for Grundy I’m all for it. One premiership in 57 years shows they are bloody hard to win. Collingwood 3 in almost 65 years. It’s tough. Strike while the irons hot!
