I refer you to our learned friend, Mr Buttox KC.

So in this hypothetical we could do Clark + Bowes + pick 7 before we're full.
For 2022 weve had 43 players on the list

38 main 5 rookie (inc McGuinness)

We have delisted Lynch, P Walker, McGuiness, Hayden So far

Added Dawson

We now have 38 main 3 rookies (polec/edwards/dawson)

we have two more rookie spots plus another two from AFL pp (7 in total)

Assuming we need to upgrade edwards (leaves us with 39 main and 2 rookies)

Could we move Spicer, Bonar, Greenwood, JZ and Archer to rookie list. (leaves us with 34 main and 7 rookies)

Possible delistings Anderson, Turner, Walker, Atu (Leaves us with 30 main and 7 rookies)

Add Logue, Tucker, Clark and Bowes (34 main and 7 rookies)

leaves 3 picks plus harvey.

Does this check out?

How will coachless teams fare in trade week?

Former North Melbourne coach and Brisbane footy boss David Noble says the Kangaroos and Lions - as well as Essendon - will be at a disadvantage during the upcoming free agency and trade period because of their senior coaching situations.

Kangaroos coach Alistair Clarkson will not start his new job succeeding Noble at Arden Street on the previously earmarked November 1 date, while Fagan has been stood down from his role as the Lions senior coach following the disturbing allegations raised about their treatment of First Nations players while at Hawthorn.

The Bombers are still yet to appoint a senior coach, a month after sacking Ben Rutten.

On Monday Colin Young, the manager of Fremantle’s Griffin Logue, said Clarkson had been big in the decision by his client to nominate North Melbourne.

Noble said it would be a blow for the Roos and Lions to not have Clarkson and Fagan, and for Essendon to not have a senior coach installed, coming into the trade period.

“It is awkward because ultimately at this time of year players want to talk to the coach,” he said on SEN.

“The person who ends up solidifying the deal is the coach, where are you going to play, what type of system you will play, where they see the team going in the next year or two.

“So yeah it makes it really tricky now you can’t get the players in front of the coach.

“There would have been some work already done but ultimately you get to this point in time but you want to meet that player’s partner or that player one more time to solidify things.”

Hawthorn great Jack Gunston says he is still weighing up a move to Brisbane Lions to replace outgoing goal kicker Dan McStay.
Gunston, 31, is an unrestricted free agent meaning he can walk to the Lions without the club giving up anything in a trade.

The three-time premiership forward said he was still considering his options at a TAB spring carnival launch function on Tuesday despite coach Chris Fagan’s decision to step away from the coaching role for the time being.

Jack Gunston is close to a decision between Hawthorn and Brisbane

Jack Gunston has declared himself close to a decision on whether he will exercise his unrestricted free agency rights and request a shift to the Brisbane Lions.

Fagan will take part in the AFL’s investigation into the treatment of Hawthorn indigenous players which is expected to take months to complete.

Fagan will vigorously defend himself in the face of claims Hawthorn players were mistreated during his time at Hawthorn as coach development manager and football operations boss.

Gunston is in-line to replace McStay who will head to Collingwood as an unrestricted free agent.

The gun forward said he was close to making a call whether to head north.

Gunston was at Hawthorn during Fagan’s time there.

“I’m pretty close to coming to a decision,” Gunston said.

Yep.
I dont bother going into the main list/cat a list as it really makes no difference.
Those lists have a total for us of 44.
We have 6 uncontracted including those who have already been delisted. + the pp = 8 total inclusions.
You named 4 players + you want 4 in the draft
Works perfect.

I’m running with the hope that Hill stays at St Kilda. Hall probably. Ziebell shouldn’t be anywhere near it.
Yep dont need him imo. When you look over the best 22s its pretty damn impressive and should be ultra competitive given many will be better again.
We really had the year from hell, no Cunners, McKay was out a lot, Hall out for a huge chunk, Chom injuries, TT a shocker, Stevo only marginally better

But if he stays at gc and gets his 1.6m and plays seconds.... then what type of deal is he going to get post that? Be minimal. otherwise he goes to a team where he will be playing firsts and be exposed and potentially get a much better deal in two/three years

I think you're missing a key point Makeshift Park is making 'if it meant they had to give back a future 1st rounder?'.

Gold Coast have little to no leverage in this trade, if they demand a 1st rounder back as part of trade the club they're dealing with can simply walk away and the Suns are stuck with Bowes and his salary for the next two years. Clearly they don't want this, the club they're dealing with has all the power, reckon they'll be lucky to get a late 2nd rounder.

Ive havent kept up with it, but this Bowes and pick 7 thing is a trade expected back? Would our future second get it done? Surely we have the cap space pick 1 and 7 would be pretty damn handy along with the other recruits.

I’m torn on this one on the face of it I think it’s perfectly reasonable I mean I see no problem with a mechanism to protect the club, because even from a salary cap pov if he cops a suspension for another issue then they are screwed.

I mean pro sports have had weight clauses and a litany of other things written in to try and keep their investment going well.

It's an exceptionally slippery slope

It checks out numerically but perhaps not from a player management perspective - eg ziebell won’t go from being Captain to the rookie list, and likewise Archer won’t be rewarded for a promising season with a ‘demotion’. Mahony and Lazzaro are much more likely candidates

Simple I wouldnt consider it if they wanted anything back

If it's us, * and the Cats...where do you think he'll want to go? Honestly?

answer in bold above due to recent success
I don't know what the solution is, but doesn't it show that the system is broken when the premiers, full of stars, can have room for a salary cap dump?

It'll soon be a two, three tiered system of feeder clubs into the big clubs like we see in the EPL.

If the Bowes deal goes through to Geelong, then I would want Geelong and Gold Coast's recent trading history to be investigated by the AFL.

It would essentially be:
2019: Geelong traded pick 27 for pick 15 and pick 67.
2020: Geelong traded pick 52 for pick 27
2022: Geelong traded pick ~20 for pick 7 and Bowes
You could also throw in a conveniently generous FA compo pick for Motlop to smooth out Ablett's homecoming at far less cost to Geelong than it should have been.

They're likely to lose a few big names off their list in the coming days which might balance the books on that.

Whether that kind of trade will stuff them in the next couple of years with their younger guys coming out of contract is another kettle of fish.

Hard to believe Brent Harvey's son will be playing for us next year, the bloke only just retired.
