I don't know what the solution is, but doesn't it show that the system is broken when the premiers, full of stars, can have room for a salary cap dump?

It'll soon be a two, three tiered system of feeder clubs into the big clubs like we see in the EPL.

It's pretty absurd that before it was decided, a mid-ish 1st round pick seemed like something that would be a possibility for making up some of our draft assistance. One of the reasons we supposedly didn't get it was to protect the integrity of the draft.

Now a team basically has to give away pick 7, as they can't afford to pay a player drafted with that pick and need to use it's value to create salary cap space. So a mid-ish first round pick is up for grabs.

I know the two situations aren't really related, but it seems so ridiculous that the wooden spooners, with 9 wins over three seasons, were denied access to a pick of a roughly similar value and now the reigning premiers are front runners to pick it up effectively for free. But the draft apparently is keeping its integrity intact

They're likely to lose a few big names off their list in the coming days which might balance the books on that.

Whether that kind of trade will stuff them in the next couple of years with their younger guys coming out of contract is another kettle of fish.
The book balancing stuff cracks me up every time. We start off asking how can teams retain stars, and bring more in: we are told that they are all on unders to chase success. A couple retire and we are told that it frees up millions a year for the next decade. Carlton are still pointing to Judd no longer being on the books.

And thats why there needs to be more transparency around player wages.
I'm one that does not understand how Geelong can fit the players they have under the cap and an investigation would be welcome.

But if you have 3 top end stars retire that will free up at least 800k in the cap. For the sake of argument say Higgins, Selwood and one of Hawkins, Tuohy or smith are on 300k each, which would be low.

Whether giving 3 players worth of salaries to Bowes is responsible, is a different story.

It’s not about the listed salary, it’s all the off the book stuff that is making the comp so unbalanced.

If the system it worked as intended good players looking for a good contract would move to the clubs with the cap space. Instead these players move to the strong clubs for less on the books and the rest off the books.

The old line that they came here for less for success is a furphy. These blokes are getting the full whack, just off the books.
No argument. You're almost certainly right.

If only the AFL had a properly staffed, highly competent Integrity Unit that was genuinely serious about integrity. One can dream.

Until the side agreements are prevented this will always be an issue.

Visy, Jeep, and Cotton On seem to have a bunch of non-participating executives who happen to play footy as well.

"If a club tries to dud another, those who feel they’ve been on the wrong end of the bargain will remember. With live trading on draft night, you never know when you might need to call in a favour.

“The occurrence and the regularity of a win-loss scenario is very rare now".

^^^^

Good hope we remember that next time we're dealing with the Tigers!

oh well
Some on here would never want to win a trade - they’re use to getting torn a new one in every trade
Hard to believe Brent Harvey's son will be playing for us next year, the bloke only just retired.

Should of played another two years

Excellent point! For those playing at home it was…View attachment 1519350

North out
Pick 42 (21)
47 (21)
54 (22)

North in
32 (21)
36 (21)

Those trades shouldve been further in north's favour if it was for not bidding, with the future 3rd never leaving in the first place.

We need to get on the blower to Aqium, Melbourne Airport Parking & Tasmanian Heritage Cheese – time to start mixing it with the big boys!

Not really much different to Sydney winning a flag and singing Tippett and Franklin on massive long term deals in the next 2 off seasons.

Imagine our eyes bleeding if we had Buddy and got the same compo.

DOCKERS PAIR LIKELY TO RECEIVE SECOND-ROUND OFFERS

FREMANTLE is expected to be offered second-round draft picks for wantaway pair Griffin Logue and Rory Lobb.

Logue is keen to join North Melbourne on a five-year offer, with the Roos set to offer a future second-round pick to the Dockers for the defender who they have pegged for a key backline position.

The AFL handed the Roos a second-round pick and third-round pick for next year's draft under the proviso they are used in a trade to land at least one player in this year's period. They can't be held over to stockpile for North Melbourne but are tied to the Kangaroos' ladder position next year.

TRADE HUB All the latest player movement news

Lobb has requested a trade to the Western Bulldogs despite being contracted to Fremantle for next year, but the Dockers have said the key forward will not be traded.

The Dogs are expected to present a second-round pick to the Dockers in exchange for the 29-year-old. Their second-round selection this season sits at No.29, or they could look at a future second-round pick.

AFL.com.au reported on Monday that Carlton's trade for Dockers wingman Blake Acres would centre on a future third-round pick. – Callum Twomey

I’d be going after Narkle, stiff to be delisted. Pressure forward is what we’re crying out for. He’s great around the goals and can accumulate the possessions too. DFA come on down.
Make it happen Clarko.
