Incorrect. You can add years and smooth a contract out. Finlayson effectively took 3 years at port Adelaide for his salary he was on at gws over 2. Geelong will add years
Pretty sure Mud Guts Ahern did the same with us.

Stephenson? Did he do something similar?

Doesn't that only work if the player has limited or zero other choices though? Ie why would a player take that option unless desperate to get out or a change. Bowes looks like he has endless options

Generally you would balance it off with some extra years and some extra cash, no one is playing 3 years for the price of 2, unless they are desperate to join a specific club or live in a certain part of the country.

Wing? Not sure that will entice him

He is easily in our midfield rotation if he is a half decent player.
1. Cunners
2. LDU
3. Simpkin
4. Bowes
5. Thomas
6. Phillips

Jed will be gone.
Powell isn’t ready yet. Hell Phillips isn’t really ready yet.
JHF isn’t ready yet and should play HF or even HB
And if he can’t beat out Greenwood on one leg, he doesn’t deserve to play midfield.

We are a minimum 2 years away from (hopefully) having a strong midfield. And by then Cunners will be almost gone too. In fact if we don’t land Bowes, midfield will be just as big a need as key forward with our early pick(s).

Dude you’ve made a huge blunder and left Hugh Greenwood off your list.

Should read
1. Hugh Greenwood
2. Ben Cunnington
3. …. Etc

It’s alright I’ll forgive you this time.

I think we’ll pick Wardlaw so our midfield will be full.

But if he’s not demanding the number 1 pick as a key forward in this draft, then I’d wait and see how he goes against men.

Unless we’re talking splitting pick 1 and ending up with Cadman and Sheezel that’s a different conversation.
I don’t think wardlaw is demanding a first pick

Barely played this year, dodgy hammy and is a short inside mid whose stats aren’t anything crazy when he did play

More than happy to go Cadman pick 1

The only thing I’m worried about with Wardlaw is his hammies but I’ve spoken to some people that know a bit about that stuff and they said it won’t be a problem.
We don’t want this to be another Selwood situation.

Selwood, Dalhaus and Higgins are all gone, so that would be at least a million between the three of them alone.

Just as an FYI, Higgins and Dahl were on 500K each and Sel would have been similar, if not a bit lower. Those 3 going alone will free up around 1.5 MIL in the cap

But I also think they back ended Cameron contract too though so that he was paid more when the likes of these guys retired

Doesn't really matter, because that 1.5 MIL is still spare. Just means we have less than we might have had, if it was front ended.

With that said, our backending is like 50K either way. We're not doing a GC or Collingwood and starting him off at 500K and then finishing him off at 1.5 MIL - just not how we structure our cap.

We'll also have Stanley, Tuohy, Smith, Rohan, all likely retiring next year, so that'll be around another 1.5 MIL. Plus Duncan the year after and then Danger and Hawk. Gonna have a lot to spare once a lot of these older guys finish up
