And that is why you are here and not at the club. What is hard to miss? The club didn't think we could address a long term need with the picks available. In essence delisting someone you think is a list clogger and replacing them with someone 17 professional sporting clubs think is a taller list clogger.

Yeah like scooter Thompson was by passed
Think it’s derelict to not have someone as backup that could potentially evolve in the future

Yep, and the club thought enough of his year in the vfl to spend pick 37 on him. We literally have a 197cm player on the rookie list right now the club has been developing for 3 years and has said he will be used as a defender. So that solves your problem. Or do you need another KPD no one saw fit to recruit at the draft and offer 2 years to?

33. Pwalker

Two comments by Nobes sum up Pwalk. 1. He is the best kick on the list & 2. He is further ahead than we thought he would be. Put in strong VFL performances at HB & wing & was an emergency for the WCE game which is a fair effort for a first year rookie listed player. Must be a contender for the Hb & Wing positions vacated by Frog & Ats although there is plenty of competition. A fuller pre-season will benefit & we can really use his kicking skills.

34. Arch

We have to forget his surname. The reality is he is a late draft pick & shut down defender with very little recent footy like all the VIC draftees. With that background he is not likely to get too many AFL games in his first season, injuries notwithstanding. Let’s give him time & not place too many expectations on him. He should pick Sugar’s brains as Sugar is the current lockdown defender.

I forgot how young he is. Not sure where he will end up but has some really unique attributes and potential for a lot more development.

I think a full season in the VFL and the gym will serve him well. Although not in my mix for selection this year (early I know) I'd still like to see him be in the mix late season like Spicer was or at least finish his year with some good hitouts.

biggest issue is lack of opportunity not lack of skill.
backline is kinda set and there currently isnt a lot of spots open for the young kids.

The best thing about him is that he seems to have his father's hunger, which is rare for the second generation. Usually they're kind of complacent and think they can coast on the name, at some level. Doesn't appear to be the case here. He'll never die wondering.

I wouldn't say it's set there's one spot that isn't guaranteed that's the spot that boner young perez etc are all fighting for defs don't think arch will play much this season if at all but he could be vying for that position

bonar, perez, archer, young, atu, and a lesser extent goater are all fighting for a single spot on field as that mid sized defender/HB player.
There's a huge amount of competition for the same spot imo.

Get Atu back down forward surely.

Nah, the way I see it, he is 1st in line as Kayne's back-up for the small defender spot - and potentially 2nd in line as Hall's back-up (behind Flynn). There's way too much competition up forward at present.

I have the defensive depth chart as something like this:

McKay - Who the hell knows who his back-up is
Corr - J.Walker

Ziebell - Bonar/Young

McDonald - Young/Goater
Hall - Perez/Atu

Turner - Atu/Hayden

And then 1 interchange spot for those back-ups & the remaining players: Bonar, Walker, Perez, Atu, Hayden, Young, Goater, Archer, McGuinness, P.Walker, anyone else I've forgotten.

I presume Bonar is 1st in line for the interchange spot due to his ability to play small & relatively tall, but Perez, Young & even Goater could possibly do that as well. Obviously, if Nobes prefers Lukey as a genuine wing, then another spot may open up... But I doubt this since defense is our thinnest line for depth by far right now.

If we're playing against an extra tall forward line, then both Bonar & Walker would get an interchange gig.

Hayden plays the turner role more imo

Hall and ziebs are in the home straight of their careers - if they tail off quickly there’ll be opportunities

This poor sod has the weight of expectation on him already, let him grow and develop, he is not his father

35. Charlie

An intriguing player.Flew under the radar last year as the media focus was on the higher draft picks. In the games he played he showed some toe & a willingness to take the game on. Must be in the frame to take the Froggy wing spot where his mixture of speed & endurance will be important. Only a second year player so expectations shouldn’t be too high. An effusive personality who shows a passion for the jumper.

36. Phoenix

He was our number two small forward last year behind Jack Mahony & now we have recruited Paul Curtis as another small forward.Where does that leave Phoenix? Could we try him further up the field in a wing / high half forward role similar to what he had in the SANFL. This would allow him to use his pace & line breaking ability. We have some options but he needs to nail down a role

37 Ronny

Been on the list for 4 years & only played 12 games & that is the gist of it. Needs an injury free run to nail down a spot. His draft testing included a record standing jump which is a measure of explosion & acceleration, ideal for playing on quick skilful small forwards but Sugar will start in that role. Is brave & hard so a tagging role is an option but we haven’t seen him enough to know what is the best fit. His injury history means he is now playing for his career.

Looks like he's really come back in top nick this season and from the few videos I have seen of him he's looking really settled and comfortable. A far cry from the shy and quiet kid we drafted a year ago, and the addition of former SA team mate in JHF will be another welcome addition. Hopefully continues to develop his game and we start seeing him punish defenders with his speed and agility.

38. X

We worked so hard to keep X as he is key part of the transition plan from Goldy. Goldy plays at least 80% in the ruck so it is X’s lack of forward craft as much as his ruck work that has kept him from playing more games. However the plan is likely X & CCJ sharing ruck/ forward duties when Goldy retires. The transition is likely to start this year as Nobes has flagged Goldy playing forward more. Despite the recent positive article on the Club’s website I still feel X is behind CCJ due to CCJ’s superior forward ability.

39. Flynn

Has to be in line to take Ats run & gun role but the priority has to be getting the knee right after two knee recos. In his career he has shown poise, footy smarts and bravery but it is a very small sample size. I expect him to play some senior games in 22 but to be rested from others as we mange game time & expectations. He is an exciting prospect nevertheless.

5 games & 3goals from a guy who slid to pick 56 in the draft is a good return. But why did he slide? Was it concerns over consistency, attitude or was he seen as only being able to play as a medium forward. 2022 will go a fair way to answering these questions. His inclusion was warranted on the back of good AFL form so attitude is not a problem at this stage. He seems to have a bit of flair about him & an extra marking target in the forward line will help him.

He slid cos he went to school in Taylor's Lakes and played for the Western Jets.

41. Matt McGuiness

Who? After two years on the list many supporters would not be able to pick him out on the field & that is the crux of his dilemma. He just needs to get on the park. The key issues around him this year are: being injury free & working out what is his best position. He has been cited as being suited at both ends of the ground but we now need to decide where he’s best value is.
