Yep if true this is good, here’s why:
The hard dose of medicine we need is to either hit the draft consecutively with the picks we would’ve traded OR go for a high quality (preferably younger) midfielder this off-season. I’m not sure whose out of contract but there’s always a few.
We do this for the next two years, whilst Max King continues his progression alongside the rest of our youth and we will have a strong, young, midfield driven team with some older, quality players. In fact if we play to our strengths over the next two years there is zero reason why we can’t make a statement in consecutive finals appearances.
At the end of that time, we can try again for Ben King, and if that works - great! We probably get him as a FA, and we essentially will have the best forward line in the comp. If we don’t - no worries, we’ve done the hard yards and set ourselves up with either high draft picks or quality established young midfielders to keep on gunning for that Premiership. Essentially, you’d take two King’s if you can afford and justify it, but one King is more then enough to be the spearhead of a challenging team.
PLUS, I like Ben at Gold Coast. It’s less so that I think it’s because Gold Coast won’t be a threat - they should be in the next two years based on developing talent (but let’s see). But more so because it would just be yuck to see Ben in other Vic team colours that aren’t RWB. If it’s a two year contract then he’ll be there until 2024. Given that Max is with us until 2027, this contract length still bodes well in our favour. The truth is we probably need more time before we’re ready for the possible luxury of two King’s - we could make it work now, but we’d be more ready in 2 years. I’m still a firm believer that two King’s on the team is a good thing. But if we can prove that we’re entirely capable with just one, then we can truly take advantage if we ever managed to get them both.
The real challenge here is for the club to use the next two years wisely. We need to simultaneously use the very capable squad we have to push into September AND use our war chest (of picks and free’d up cash that’s now assumingly not going to Ben) on either smart draft picks or smart young recruits. That way we set ourselves up for a sustained push. And that’s very viable. The tools and the opportunity are there, we just need to capitalise on it.

Hi Saints, was just reading the article about Tim Taranto on the AFL site. He's out of contract at the end of this year and it seems is in no hurry to sign his life away to the giants (says he's gonna wait till mid season to even think about it).
Got me thinking about the cash and picks we've stashed away for Ben King. I'd like to know what you all think.

A mid seems more of a need right now. Taranto is one of about 5 I would like.
If we were chasing a GCS player I'd be after Mowman's favourite Noah Anderson. He's got his dad on the board for a Saints connection to stop the romantic daydreamers having pissy attacks but he's a freak as well. Will be one of the future guns of AFL IMO. He's only been going for 2 seasons and the least hyped of all their kids. Rowell gets all the love but Noah gets shit done.

We need both, but need a gun mid more so Taranto it is if given the choice.
Would be happy to part with the going rate for such a player- ie the old, '2 firsts with a 2nd rounder back'.
However with ryder gone next year, we will need another gun tall forward or genuine gun ruck/fwd to partner roma.
Getting ben would negate the need for us to play a crab 2nd ruck- max could ruck inside 50 and roma do the rest of the ground without benchtime (ala goldstein/gawn/grundy).
Given gun talls go for more than mids, I'd be happy to cough up 2 firsts with nothing back for ben.

Sounds like both will stay at their clubs.
If Bing signs at GC for another 2 years he'll most likely stay there till he's an UFA, right around retirement age for Membrey.
If that be the case then you'd take Taranto in an heartbeat.

All reports suggest King will sign a 2 year deal at Gold Coast.
Tim Taranto said this week he wants to be a 1 club player and stay in Sydney for the rest of his life.
