Hanners was gone or Sydney wouldn't have traded him. It worked out about exactly as you'd expect. It was a high stakes gamble that was always more unlikely than likely.

Hill was a publicity stunt after the Hanners disappointment IMO. We wanted to show we could be a destination for players in their prime. not just broken cast offs. That or a terrible read on where the list was at.
From memory, there was a lot of talk of us needing outside run in the Richo days, which is exactly what we got Hill in for. Outside running mids won't doesn't work very well with our current game plan tho

I think that's the case- if you don't get a team playing right as a unit, then you waste talent.

We never had any run so we went are Hill , the only guy who was available at a price.
Hopefully with a reinvigorated midfield Hill can produce his best.

Yeah really hope so, personally think he is a good player if played to his strengths. He isn't going to be a hard player and defensively he isn't good. Perfect fat side winger and can hit some great kicks i50. We just haven't been playing very conducive to that type of player. Also, I think we need to forget about his cost and just play him in his best spot for the team not try and inflate his stars so it seems like he is worth it

They have signed a few in the past that blew up in there face - Roberton signed then had his heart complaint and basically was history after that but hang around for another 4 years , the same can be said about Armitage , had is best year and signed a big deal and did his back - was never the same.
Some others were blasted but worked out in the end like McKenzie.
You can hardly blame the club for Roberton having heart issues. Even Armitage was only on a 3 year deal.
If your solution is to not offer more than one or two year contracts you won't keep or attract anyone.

Kind of stupid to eat all the right foods and live a healthy lifestyle, then stick that stuff in yourself.
I would hazard a guess that many professional athletes who live healthy lifestyles would prefer the occasional snort of calorie free, metabolic boosting nose beer rather than knocking back dehydrating, high carb, 600 calorie tins of VB.

Saw Roo at Carlton FC today. Not sure what he's doing there, maybe we can make something up and get our grandmothers onto SEN to spread some shit?

Get the best mid in the draft, maybe a second high first and get another one? FA DeGoey, then develop Owens and Windy?
Lets get it done, sounds easy

Just hope we dont pile to much pressure/hope on Windy & Owens next year

You seem the only one triggered. There is not one name on that list that should not have been delisted, possible Bruce, possibly Acres. Bruce was looking good for Bulldogs before doing his knee and Acres was going well for Freo but curiously has been forced out, hopefully he gets another gig.

it shows the list was moribund and needs to be refreshed. You say the list is from other AFL teams and mercenaries. Two ways to refresh the list, from other clubs, through the draft.

So if not from other clubs, you think we should have refreshed the list through the draft. Curious how we draft 28 players in three years and not get beaten by ten goals a game and make 2022 North Melbourne look like the premiers.

Can be easily seen that the list was no good and it has markedly improved. What hasn't improved is the mental weakness of the team, and its inability to play a consistent and cohesive style of football.

Have been loathe to critisise Ratten as I didn't think I had the evidence to say what is missing. We still have obvious holes in our list, but the mentality and the playing style is squarely on the coaches.

We have Ratten nominally for two years, with this in mind we need to get good assistants around him. Lenny may be a good start.

Think it is pretty low to critisise all the players from other clubs as being mercenaries. I have always thought that of Hill as he has won three flags, but it is a slight on the character of players like Paddy, Crouch, and Wood, who have all put in, Butler and Doogs who while critisised for their play can never be accused of squibbing it, and Higgins who was in excellent form prior to his concussions.
Bang on everywhere JB.

Only disagreement is I definitely think Bruce should have been moved on even if we did accept unders from the Bulldogs. He wasn't a bad player but he was too comfy and not productive or consistent enough with us. I couldn't wait to get rid of him truth be told. Anyway, old news now.

Totally agree about the mercenary stuff and agree with W2L that it's less about the talent and more how we're utilising it. Best thing we could do is poach a far more effective forward coach.

Of all of them, I wish clav was still on the list. Young defenders take a while to come good and I thought he showed enough. He was also a pretty tall fella.

Yep agreed, him and Langlands weren't really given a fair shake and I reckon Connolly might be another one coming up. These guys have the potential to be at least decent depth but are churned while inconsistent but tradable stars remain. Grinds my gears

I liked what i saw from Langlands, bit of dash and a lot of tackle pressure. Jason Castagna made a career of doing just that.

Connolly unfortunately is stuck behind Sincs, I'd hate to see him traded/ delisted in a year or two because of that. From what I've seen he's a great user, just needs to be given a go.

They’re definitely not allowed second- year blues!
