Not keen on Mitchell as the price tag will be way too high.

Don't want to see Long go, but gee some around here make him out to be the second coming. He's played over 70 games and this time last year we were happy to see if anyone wanted him.

Do I think he has a great deal more to give? Yes. But for Longy along with a number of players it's all about consistency.

Also, talk of Hill and Long for Pick 19 is a bit rich. Especially when we would be paying some of Hills contract.

He is one we are keen on talking too.

Way to early to call it anything other than that.

Hawthorns price tag will also have

Massive worry if this is true. Would be doubling down on a failed strategy and would show everyone is in job preservation mode. A starting midfield of Steele, Mitchell and Crouch is incredibly slow and same. He's 29, would come at the expense of developing the likes of hopefully this years high draft pick, Windhager and Owens in the middle. Hate it. DeGoey makes sense because he is something we lack and he is a free agent, Mitchell would actually cost something. I would lose all faith in the current regime if true.

Apparently we are keen on tom
Mitchell according to Garry Lyon

Slow mid (though very good accumulator) who cannot kick well enough.

He is also going to be turning 30 next season.

I mean that is exactly the type of player we 100% do not need.

Who would he displace? Crouch, who is younger, who this season was the better player.

Are you saying 19 is too much or too little?

Long has had a career plagued by coaches trying to change him, not finding him a permanent role, first sent out of the side when the side doesn't perform etc. He looks exactly the type that given the right encouragement could be an above average player. It hurts to move players on that have potential that you can see we aren't developing. Especially as he wouldn't get much value in a trade. Probably a third round pick. It immediately eats into our depth and the chances of a third round pick having a long career or even making an impact for 3 to 5 years is remote.

I was thinking today about where the clubs at. I've got to commend the older folks on this forum to be honest. I don't know how you blokes keep supporting the club so closely. My old man lived through the horror of the 80's and his last game in person was the 2005 prelim against the Swans. He gave up going after that and watched on the telly or listened on the radio for the next decade. Club still used to piss him off but he had had enough of turning up to see us lose.

I'm 32 so still have energy left to care enough but I can see how the average supporter who has lived through the last few years + the 80's would just give up.
I'm 58 & have put up with some tough times, still waiting like all supporters for that elusive 2nd flag, will it happen i sometimes doubt i'll see it in my lifetime, but we all live in hope, we had some good times during Ross' era but i feel he left the cupboard bare when he left, poor decisions haven't helped.

Been a member for 41 years it's part of my DNA i wont give it away in search of that flag.

To me we could get a guy like Crouch in on the cheap and have him sit in reserve for injury and realistically those kids aren't going to play 22 games in the midfield. If we rotate a few through and slip them into the HBF/ HFF type spots the rest of the time we get games into them.

It feels like we are wanting to have a bet each way and draft but not lose ground so top up as well.

Hill will be a loss of quality but potentially off set with JDG, who is a sometimes star, sometimes GOP. Mitchell would fill a hole when guys get injured but won't be cheap and won't be playing VFL.

It probably costs us development time for the kids but we probably stay up rather than step backwards. It most likely gets us playing finals even with Hill gone but then it might keep the guys like Ratts in jobs when it's not really true improvement. Just patching the holes in a leaky ship.

Yep i will run with that with Ratten trying to secure his job over what's best for the club in the medium to long term.

JDG would be great as long we don't go bat shit crazy with the contract. Time will tell.

Would Matt Crouch come knowing he's playing a Dunstan role for Melbourne? Moving interstate to play backup?

Fully agree with your post Gringo.

Every off season - we make time to talk to any surprising contracted players of caliber looking for an exit.

He might want to leave and Hawthorns price could ensure there are no bidders.

Too early to worry about it

It's too little.
Long has had a career plagued by inconsistency and unfortunately dates with the tribunal. Every time we have seen his good, he has copped the wrath of the MRP and spent time out of the game. And this has dented his confidence. And thus we have inconsistencies.

Hill gets the Pick 19 on his own if we are paying any of his contract.

The age might actually be a bonus because they should be primed just as he falls over. It's the cost that is a worry.

We are definitely in preservation mode from president to boot-studder, JDG is going to be very well off after we get through with him. If we miss finals next year, expect all kinds of staff changes. Ratts wouldn't make the year out if we look a like we can't make it and the people who made the appointment and list build would have to be in the sights too. Bassat has had his credibility smashed since taking over.

Watters told a few senior players who basically didn't perform when it counted, that they should do better, and considering themselves in the star category, they went and sooked to the hierarchy who found it easier to remove a raw new coach who they wouldn't get behind anyway after the shock of Lyon walking out, than to trade sacred cows. The club has a history of the tail wagging the dog, and that's one of the many reasons we have been a flop as a club for so many years. I hope the review by Noble and co goes through the club and pulls no punches.
You are so wrong on this it is not funny mate.

they were correct to sack him, he was a complete waste of space and basically not up to the task.

The biggest question was who were the clowns who selected him in the first place? the ones that basically let Ross Lyon walk? You betcha.

He was a pretty weird dude though. I met him when he was coaching for us and he was a bit of an odd ball. I don't know that we did our homework on him but we probably didn't do much due diligence on his. He had a bit of an abrasive demeanour from my experience.

Over on saintsational someone said a WA radio guy stated we will sign a past Brownlow winner. Would have to be Mitchell yeah?
Wouldn’t bother me too much assuming we send an appropriate pick and extend his contract so he’s getting good but not stupid money. He will frustrate some fans but he sure knows how to win a clearance and find plenty of the ball.

I wouldn’t be trading hill, he has a couple of years left and is still a very good player when used properly. Longy can go, he has some talent but isn’t best 22. Let’s be honest we shopped him last year and he’s played two outstanding games, 1 got him drafted the other will get him a couple of years somewhere.

If Mitchell is coming does that mean Degoey isn’t. If both are coming and hill is leaving then that was a quick review because clearly we’re loading up.

Not sure testosterone is the cause of recklessness. I'd say that angry posters with nothing nice to say are brimming with excess manliness.... they post like some hard-nut ****-stick that walks past your chair and pushes you face down in your espresso martini while while winking at your wife.

Little girly hand dungeon boys don't get to talk low testosterone posting.

For what we'd get for Long he's better as depth IMO. If he plays well he's an asset, if he plays badly he's depth.

If we are going after the likes of Mitchell we may as well go all in. Get DeGoey, keep Hill, try and convince Ryder to un-retire, follow through on the Darcy Gardner murmurings. At least have a clear plan, otherwise I just don't see the point.

If norf want him and make a decent offer then he should take it and move on Imo. I have no knock on his skills apart from maybe his vision and devision making but looking good occasionally and producing regularly are 2 different things. Very hard to justify giving him a couple of years on decent money based on 1 game. He was on the table last year and isn’t contracted so good chance he‘s traded imo.

It wasn't one good game, he had plenty of games where he was impactful, but used as the medical sub or in different positions. He hasn't be allowed to settle and this has been to his detriment. He is one of the few players that hits hard and often. Was 'curiously' dropped after a good game (can't recall which one) and then was used as basically the 23rd player.

We can't keep losing players like Long.

Hasn't been allowed? Or hasn't been good enough to demand a spot at either half back or as a small forward, with other players on our list being better than him.
