What do you think we're getting for Hill if he goes Champ?

Time to cut our loss there. Ben Long is fool's gold after many seasons and one complete game.

Hill worth a mid 2nd. Long worth a low 2nd.

Hill is contracted till end of 2025.
We are not looking to offload him as a salary dump.
In fact, we'd probably be OK to keep him.
We have no reason to trade him for peanuts.

Ball is in Clarko's court to give us an acceptable deal.

Don't think Bassat should be the only one to fall on his sword if things go pear-shaped with Ratts next year. How about the list management & recruiting team? They need to be held accountable for putting us in this situation too. Long list of stuff-ups going back 10 years.

I think Bassat will be the one throwing the chairs if shit hits the fan. The footy department has got away with bullshitting them along for years and if this is another dead end I think he'll be out for blood.

Still needs a trade unless he walks to the preseason draft. I can’t see that happening, there’s no bad blood and we’re not talking about anything above a third rounder. Plenty of depth in this draft so I’d be happy enough with that if it happens.
He will walk to the Pre season draft if the North deal is good for him
North have no picks to offer anyhow

Incredibly overrated player, a fringe player who fails to produce even at vfl level but somehow manages to find his way back into contention for the last few spots. It has been his best year by a mile Imo but he‘s out of contract and someone else is showing interest so don’t be surprised if he’s traded.

Imo long is exactly the type of player we can afford to trade, not first choice in any role and with several players coming back from injury and others joining the club he’ll be pushed further down the order.

I like Long, and I want him to stay.

However, if he had’ve tripped over the cat on the morning of the round 23 match, and been a late out, I doubt there’d be much outrage over Clarkson’s approach.

Hey I fully, absolutely agree with that. I would not be pushing Hill out the door and the ball is definitely in NM's court to come with a good offer. There is no financial incentive for us with this.

But-
If Hill wants to go, it's hard to keep that player- contract or not. We do have the whip hand, and we can find a way to Pick 19 (their Compo), that's a very good deal for a 29yo with a large wage. However I do not think NM would do anything close to that for Hill alone.

Ben Long, in my opinion has been a frustrating, hot-and-cold player and after 6 seasons and at the age of 25, I don't have faith in his consistency. I also don't care how hard your edge is when your average disposals per game for the 2022 season is 11.8 (his second best disposals average). He doesn't find the ball enough.

So I would absolutely flip Hill and Long for Pick 19.

Pick 19 also puts us in a strong position to target Brisbane's first round pick.

I'm actually keen on the idea of another inside mid but not Mitchell, he'd be on big coin and would take a decent trade. Probably a future second rounder at a minimum and probably more than that. I find it hard to believe that we have done a serious review if they are making these huge investment type calls like we are assuming that it's business was usual next year before it's even come out. What if we sign all these guys and need to step back and draft for a few years?

I guess we'll sack Gags and pretend we were thorough. I'd probably chase crouch who you assume would be just about give away.

Mitchell is to similar to Brad Crouch for me. We are crying out for mids but not accumulators like Mitchell. We need the high impact types. Agree with that last bit, reckon if we want another accumulator we could probably get Matt for nothing.

I'd be tempted to offer North serious overs for pick 1, I doubt they'd actually take it but worth a try.
Is it the right year to target Pick 1 at a premium?

From what I've heard Ashcroft is clearly the best, then there is an evenness.

It might be why they are open to trading.

Those inside ball winners are back in vogue now though. You can train them to take the dish off option rather than one two stats padders too. The Hawks have Newcombe, Worpol and Ned Long who can win their own ball but are going to be there when they challenge again.

Mitchell finished last year's Brownlow in 7th place. To suggest that he won't make us better in the short term is probably a bit rich, it's more just very temporary than a long term structural thing. Like Paddy Ryder we can use him but it's a patch job.

We really struggled when Steele and Gresham went down. To me it means reshuffling players around but realistically putting more meat in the pan is going to help us play finals so I think we'll go hard at anything that can move us forward next year.

I'd still like to get a quality HBF and move Sincs on ball. Your best players should be in the middle in my mind. Attacking footy is back in vogue, having a stacked defence is very 4 years ago.

Clubs say they are open to trading pick 1 frequently but never end up doing it so I wouldn’t read much into that. As for the evenness of the draft I honestly don’t know so you’re probably right.

Again I am in agreement with you. God this is bizarro world today. However we need some outside run for Mitchell to be effective. Need to have someone like Brad Hill :D
