I cant get that last game against St Kilda with Meek out of my mind. It's going to take a few decent games from him i think to turn my opinion around on him.

I suppose he had a lot friends that day but he stood out more then the rest. Was horrific.

I hope the rest of the team haven't forgotten that performance as well it was insipid and shouldn't be accepted in 2022.
Sure but the average 9 game 23 year old ruck also has bad games.

Thought you guys would be interested in this video. A bit of Brodie/Darcy/Meek chemistry from under 18 Vic Country days.

I recall Brodie and Darcy having really good chemistry at clearances during that under 18 carnival. Exciting for you guys if they can get that going again.

I live on the coast so keep a close eye on the Suns and was disappointed at the way we treated Brodie and think if allowed to play his stoppage beast type role he will flourish. All the best to him and freo for the season.
Interesting. Reinforces my thoughts on him being decent clearance player (good in tight spaces and neat side step) and can take a mark up forward (with fitness a weakness he can rest up forward). Has a very awkward running style. Having played with Darcy and Meek can only help.

Hughes just got a 3 year deal didn't he? So if you think he is next to be delisted it emphasises my point that the guys we just delisted (and who no other club grabbed) are not AFL standard. And until he isn't, Wilson is best 22, and was always ahead of Duma and Watson.

I reckon if we cut Hughes he would be picked up.
All 4 of the listed players could have AFL careers elsewhere if delisted imo. Although Hughes will never be a world beater.

I personally suspect that Wilson isn‘t B22 given the way he finished 2021 and also the players we have bought in recently. But you’re right - we haven’t seen that conclusively proven yet.

I think a coaches first choice is to try and address whatever issues a proven AFL player has, and that would be the case with Wilson.

Been a pretty difficult time for players generally and he wouldn't be the only one who would have had issues.

If he responds well and has a good pre-season he is best 22. That is more significant than how he finished last season.

But we'll know soon enough.

I couldn’t disagree more on Hughes and Wilson. They both still have a very big part to play at Freo imo. Neither will worse than an emergency when we name the team for round one.

On Duman and Watson their names could easily pop up in the AFL’s Covid top up player pool. They were serviceable at worst for us when they played - we just had slightly better and too many HBFs. It’s not a need for us but I wouldn’t be totally against giving either Valente’s spot on the list.

Not exactly sure what you’re disagreeing with - my original point was simply that imo Hughes and Wilson will be delisted before Aish and Walker.

There are a lot of candidates to fit into the B22 and 4 emergencies. If injuries are minimal some quality players will miss - part of the excitement ahead.

We shouldn’t be talking about delisting any of those four players imo. I must admit though I didn’t read the whole conversation.

Personally I think people at getting ahead of themselves with Walker. He usually does 3-4 things a game that make you think we will be AFL quality but the reality is it’s glimpses at this stage. He’s not best 22 yet but will have a long career at the club.

I’m not doing a best 22 in this thread until after the pre season games (yes, a bit of a cop out) but I’d have Aish as a winger - I think that’s where he belongs.

The following isn’t aimed at you directly btw but:

Wilson from my perspective has played three and a half good seasons at Freo. He plays a month of bad footy and all of a sudden he’s delist material in the eyes of half this board. He’ll play 3/4 of the games he’s fit for minimum - he’s a long way from done.

Hughes wasn’t a good player three years ago but his 2019, 2020 and pre-injury 2021 would put him in the first 15 or so picked. Some refuse to accept he’s improved because they want to keep their whipping boy forever. Never recaptured his form after injury so let’s hope he’s back to his best after a pre season.

I think the issues for Wilson and Hughes are two fold:

Wilson has a streak of softness that is evident to anyone with eyes...
He uses his pace, but his disposal is often sub par...especially when he gets a shot at goal...

For Hughes he is brave and a great reader of the play...up until he has the ball in his hands...he then takes an eon to make a decision on where to move the ball....and is prone to an absolute doozy of a coach killing turnover.

I see Young, Clark and Walker as the antithesis of this, decent disposal, brave and fast (enough) and willing to take the game on.

Lets see how that plays out

Yes, that game still shits me. Meek wasn't alone. Our forwards were putrid. Taberner dropped more than he marked, but it wasn't just him either.

To give you an idea of how bad our forwards were, our midfield won the centre clearances (16-7), total clearances, contested possessions, the inside 50s were 52-50 and yet we lost by 10 goals.

With all that ball, the forwards managed 8 marks inside 50 and 6 goals at an accuracy rate of 35%

That's absolutely putrid. There's no way how to describe how unacceptable those stats are.

You can't blame it all on the forwards. Good delivery inside 50 has as much if not more to do with i50 conversion rates i would say.

The club has revealed some remedies which make the problems identifiable.

  • new Assistant Coaches including a new forward coach.
  • the specialist goal kicking skills coach is back.
  • a KPP with an astonishingly high accuracy rate has been drafted.
    - Fyfe is training for goal kicking accuracy.

I agree i50s were a problem by the way, and training reports indicate that is getting some focus too. But we looked a mess forward at times.

I’m on work from home until further notice as I’m an executive in an essential services company trying to minimise exposure points to our frontline workforce. I am thinking that sitting at Cockburn with my laptop and combining work with training watching should be do-able on a few occasions in the coming weeks.

It's not like the St Kilda forwards were getting silver service.

Sometimes the forwards have to take responsibility and win the 50/50s.

Until we do that, we're not making the 8.

Regarding Wilson, what I have observed when i am at the games is that you say he doesn't use the ball very well, he's not a forward and I admit at times he's gone for goal haven't been good. As far as him taking the kick outs from the backline and players in the backline passing it to him, I think he is invaluable for his passing and gaining distance. As far as I am concerned he stays in the backline, sure he lost some form last year ,but it was injury interrupted and he will get back to his best. The other asset he has ,is his speed and gaining meters.

His speed is not required when he is taking kick outs and his disposal is not pin point. He probably hits around 6 out of 10. Luke Ryan on the other hand hits his targets 9 times out of 10

Hitting 9 out of 10 would make Ryan the best kick in the league by some distance. He’d barely be above Wilson when it comes to hitting targets.

Ryan is one of those guys that can’t make a mistake according to this board. He’s a bloody good player and that’s why this board loves him but I’m left frustrated at times at how long he takes to move the ball after taking a mark - just as much as the whipping boys in fact. He’s elite in many aspects of the game - I’m not sure ball movement is one of them (above average at best imo). Even the good players aren’t perfect.

Wilson’s dash gaining 15-20m before even disposing of the ball was what made him so dangerous in his first 3 and half seasons at the club. He was by far the most dangerous player coming out of defence - not Ryan. Before anyone suggests it - I am in no way shape or form saying Wilson was the best kick in the team in that period. He’s far from it but the impact when he gained 70-80m at times resulted in some of our best and most exciting score chains. I don’t forget that because he had one bad month of footy.

That one month of footy was so bad that he disgraced his uniform. No amount of dash and good disposal is going to absolve a defender from being abject at their primary role - you know; to defend. He was embarrassing and was rightly given just a one year contract very late in the piece as a result.
