Watched the academy side the other night and there were some impressive performances from this side enough to beat the Carlton reserves side despite its depleted nature.

Look alike JHF midfielder (even with full socks pulled up) Riley Sanders showed a bit as did Zane Duursma who looks a better prospect than his brother. Both would be good additions to our midfield. Colby McKerchers ball use came under notice and Jake Rogers was probably BOG.

Archie Roberts and William Lorenz were also promising mids and i really like Darcy Wilson, particularly his run and carry and tricks that he displayed against Port Adelaide. He looks to have a huge upside and lots of pace an run and carry in his armoury.

Mitch Edwards at 207cm could be a candidate for our first pick if we could manufacture 2 first round picks. He impresses me more and more with his game and movement around the ground.

Jack Delean looks as though he has broadened his game out to become a more complete player and a serious drat prospect and i liked Orlando Turner also from SA in the forward half. He has some noce smooth movement and skills about him.

Philactides was most impressive in the back half withis run and gun and pace.

Walter showed some encouraging signs for the suns at FF and Harley Reid until injured played with real swagger and confidence although he wasted the ball a bit on a few occasions.

The wizard was once again impressive in whatever he does and will go top 5. Towmey claims he is the most well rounded forward small he has seen for a decade. Might be a bit over the top but he is a very good prospect.

Liked Callinan and Ethan Read and would like to see more of Archer Reid before making an opinion.

Moir was able to do some team orientated things with tap ons and tackles but did not show the qualities i have seen from him on previous showings.

Mcaullife did not get much of the ball but i am not sure whether he had many minutes on the ground.

Curtin good at this level but some concern about his pace for AFL. Burnt by McAsey here.

Gold coast have three boys likely to be drafted. They will need a tonne of picks to get them all over the line.

Ive probably missed a few who played well but these were the boys who on first viewing stood out to me.

Nice observation.
Curtin - If you watch his clips when he played mid a couple of weeks ago, you will see he's a natural backman. His movement and patterns translate to the back half. Even as a mid he was taking intercept marks. He will go high as a 3rd back. I'd be happy to have Curtin at the crows.
Turner was much better in this game than the Port one. He reminds me of Jesse Motlop. Very raw but in time I can see him becoming a bit of a wizard at AFL level.
Philactides I have always liked him. The way he opens the game up with his speed causes panic for the oppo. Every club is after speed and he's probably the quickest in the draft pool. We could use him.
Moir I'm not off him but I need to see more (You like what i did there ;) ) I really want to see him play league. He's got the talent but the last thing we need is someone that teases us. I really hope he can show what he can do in the champs.
Delean is a bit like Weightman. He moved well the other night and hit the scoreboard. I love how he backed himself but I'm not sure we need another small fwd.

Draft watchers - has Weckert ever played any midfield minutes and/does he seem capable of it?

Standing 191cm I wonder if he might be a bit short at AFL level as a power forward, but would be a mighty fine size for a mid.

I know we always go the next best player in the draft but if a ruckman like Edwards or A Reid were available with our first pick, would we take one of them over a midfielder like wilson, duursma or mckercher for example?

Personally I rate both of those ruckman very high anyway.

Have you cast your eye over local recent basketball convert the 207cm athletic Taylor Goad who boasts a 2.92 20m at the preseason testing?
If not might be worth the effort to check him out..massive upside for certain and already dominating the local U18 comp and likely to be SA's lead ruck at the upcoming Nationals where he's certain to be pitted up against the 2 you mention.
I must admit I haven't heard much about taylor goad but I will keep an eye on him for the rest of the season. I really like the look of the other two ruckman I mentioned but it will be interesting to see how goad goes for the rest of the year.

2 hours of my life I"ll never get back about sums up that game..

Played in very wet and squally conditions it was more a rolling scrum than an Aussie rules game. Thebby lighting ordinary and camera work s**t house, commentary worse.

Obviously under those conditions the bigger bodied u20's were too good.
.I thought Jed Dignan was probably the best for the U18's. Tyler Welsh looked to come on mid way through the 3rd and took a nice contested mark 55m out and hit the post, kicked a goal later and missed a couple wide out on the move.

Ashton Moir didn't play though he was spotted at the quarter time huddle in his tracksuit.
Was he moving nicely in the huddle😁

I'll be watching Ethan Read play in a bit over an hour, he's playing today along with the Suns highly touted Jake Rogers, Jed Walter and Zeke Uwland against an undermanned GWV Rebels team and would want to dominate the Rebels ruck Ryder Lavery who is nothing special.
Read is the best ruck at getting around the ground finding the ball and using it well … like an extra mid

And his field kicking is sublime

His actual ruck work is nothing special and lacks alot of strength so struggles with body work at ball ups + throw ins

Pass on that summary, is he an English type maybe who took a few years to build the required strength? I'd still target a ruck who's been a on a list for a couple of years already, Nick Bryan at the Dons would be one I'd like.

There’s no way we would get access to Read anyway , Gold Coast academy and might get bid on around 10-15

Will be more than just a ruck but will take a while

Short highlight package on Taylor Goad

looks ok. I did like his tapwork - I mean at his height he should win most BUT I did like the communication and precision to give it to his mids instead of halving the contest

Nah, this thread is all the research he needs
Why pay recruiting staff around the country and flights to go watch games yourself when you can just read this thread.

Saving plenty in the soft cap.

See the big Ethan Read had 27 possessions as a ruck in the Coates league game on Sunday for GC academy

202cm kid that hasn’t got close to filling out yet

Could be an absolute freak

Edwards is also very good from WA …. Looking forward to seeing who does best in nationals including Goad

Read 27 disposals

Trying to think of the last time a ruck had that much ball in a Coates / Nab league game

Can you think of any ?
