Would Tholstrup be a need? Listed as a midflield/Forward. We are already pretty stacked with players that can rotate forward and through the middle - Pedlar, Rachelle, Keays, Rankine. And then depth with Mchenry, Murphy and Berry.

I would rather us either go for a pure small forward or forward with x factor.
Nope !

Not the player type we should be selecting .....we have enough of his type

I like getting a specialist winger ....and not against getting a quality small fwd, doubt though there'll be one at our picks

Still think we'll get a tall ....and I'm still keen on a RUCK (Goad or Edwards)

Tholstrup is X factor.
I think we are looking at making Pedlar and Rachele majority time midfielders. Which will leave a gap in that space.
Hayward possible FA option next year too.
If we are honest Keays should be more of a fringe player (bench/sub) if we want to succeed.

Possible 2025 side:

Hayward - Thilthorpe - Tholstrup
Rankine - Fogarty - Welsh/Gollant

Pedlar and Rachele in midfield. Keays on bench.
Murphy and Berry not in the side.
McHenry playing for Barwon Heads.

We can get all 3.

Wing - Wilson
Half-forward/wing - Tholstrup
Ruck - Goad

It’s not a bad thing having mids that are versatile or half forwards that can go into mid IMO

Especially with way game is going

Just pick the best players I think this year

Also need to consider the stage of the rebuild. Which is why I think talk of trading into 2024 (Draper) doesnt make a lot of sense.
We have consistently said we have mostly done the drafting we want, and now want to target experience.
That didnt work this year obviously for a number of reasons (Day, Redman, Petty, Oliver).

Next year I fully expect given the rebuild progression to target experience (Hayward, Petty, experienced A grade mid).
To achieve that we will have to release our 2024 and 2025 first round picks most likely.

Just my opinion ....this Draft was hyped last year, because of the variety of player types

Next year is a MID Draft .....so yes get a running player with our first ....but then take a RUCK and KPP with the other two

Next year is load up time on Mids

Fair enough, I haven't seen any of his highlights just going by his position description of Mid/Forward.

I think Rachele, Pedlar and Rankine will all rotate between mid and forward forward so just don't see it as a great need to add another of the same. Dawson will be in the middle most of the time, same as Laird (until we push him back again). So there will generally still be 2 of Pedlar, Rachele, Rankine up forward at any one time as they can't all fit in the middle at the same time.

Next years mids wont be making a difference until 2028 realistically. We will want to be peaking before then with the likes of Dawson, Petty, Milera, Hinge, Rankine, Fogarty, TBC targeted A grade midfielder.

At the pointy end of the Draft though ....most MIDS, these days, are playing year 1 or 2 at worse

Not to the level that wins you a flag. Daicos is a once in a generation type who has risen to elite quicker than 99%.
Unless Draper shows signs of doing that (and if he does, he will go number 1 which will be out of our reach), we should be targeting an experienced midfielder if we want to legit be a contender between 2025 and 2028. Otherwise its not happening.

There are 2 reasons clubs tend to move to a focus on trade over draft at this point in the rebuild:
  1. you have mostly the quantity and quality of talent in a particular age bracket and just need some key pieces/ guns in the same age bracket to round off a contending team; and
  2. you no longer have picks high enough to draft the real gun players.
Our age bracket is 18 to 23 years (add 1 year for next year), where we have 25 players. Those players include potential guns Rankine Rachele and Michalanney supported by Tex (immediately only), Laird (3-4 years) and Dawson (only 26yo, so some time yet). Plenty of above average players in the mix also.

We should absolutely be trading for key positon players in tha age bracket, because a newly drafted key position player will take time to impact at AFL level. But midfielders impact a lot quicker, particularly higher drafted players (think Ashcroft, Sheezel from last year and Daicos and JHF and maybe Rachele from the previous). Trading for players of that calibre is extremely hard (particularly outside of Melbourne), especially without the draft capital to tempt sides to trade the real guns.

Our plan should to chase a very high draft pick next year to draft or trade in a gun, free agency offers on an Oprah scale PLUS trading for hole filling pieces. And then do the same at the end of next year . . .

DRAFT STRATEGY

The Crows have their eyes on Geelong and Essendon’s early picks, hoping to rise even further up the draft order.

Their current draft hand is 10, 14, 20 and 89.

Some clubs believe there are still 10 elite players in the draft but by the time the Crows take their current No.10 pick it will be pushed back to at least 12.

So could they offer up 14 and 20 to trade up to Geelong’s pick 8 or Essendon’s pick 9, ending up with a haul that in a best-case scenario would be picks 8 and 10?

Both Geelong and Essendon are open to draft-night trades and Adelaide clearly has the best hand of the clubs looking to secure one of those picks.

It would give Adelaide a chance at two of 193cm athletic forward Nate Caddy, elite running Murray Bushranger Darcy Wilson, 200cm Sandringham Dragons defender Ollie Murphy and 194cm defender Arie Schoenmaker.

Murphy would be a perfect fit given the Crows need multiple key backs rather than waiting for Petty as their saviour.

Given Shane McAdam is gone and free agent Himmelberg will get to the Giants as a free agent next year, a key forward in the draft wouldn’t go astray either.

But the Crows are backing in their defensive talls so a key forward is a more pressing priority.

But Why.gif
We don't need to trade-up to get those players ....and Caddy, are we really chasing him, when we have Welsh next year ?

So, accepting we ARE trying to trade up ......who is our specific targeted player .....O'Sullivan, or perhaps Sanders ?

The Crows currently have pick 10 in the draft, but come draft night it could be a different playing field, as they plot potential swaps with two teams picking higher on the board.

Agreed. The article is completely illogical, great up to the point that we want to trade up, then with complete non-sequiturs on the targeted players.

O’Sullivan , Sanders best result perhaps

Then behind them Wilson and Leake would be my guesses

I’ve heard Melbourne have strong interest with Leake at pick 8

Thanks. I can't see Sanders making it to Geelongs pick.
If true you would think Osullivan and Wilson are the targets.

I am very much hoping he is gone by our pick as it means that Wilson is more likely there OR if they went the KPP route, O'Sullivan who many seem to rate very highly here is more likely to be there

They also flew Mattaes Phillipou and his father over last year only days out from the draft and then selected Cam McKenzie, Essendon got wind and grabbed them at the airport waiting to head home and took them to The Hangar for a meet and greet....then selected Elijah Tsatas.
Strange behaviour. You'd think teams would be locked into a draft plan by now.
