Looking at that, they never mentioned Pedlar in the list of guys they wanted - they were just shocked we called him out - bolter.
IIRC, at the time people thought they had edited out Pedlar and he was one of the “4” they wanted. Emma Quayles shocked “no way” was a strange comment otherwise

McCartney also has that stunned shock look as well

They were definitely pissed

You lot are bitter about keeping Sloane for one more year? What about selecting Hamill as a rookie at 37 years of age!!!...

So apparently there's a rule on Academy matching tied to where you finish on the ladder. Make a Prelim and you can only match 1, make the finals and you can match 2 and miss the finals you can match an unlimited amount.

So the Suns had plenty of reasons to tank the 2nd half of the season after they fired Dew.

Never heard anything like that before

Because they knew Curtin would go to Crows at 8.

GWS have the best draft content every year.
My fav was when we picked pedlar, and they just sat there in shock.

Crows are way too secretive.
They could've got Curtin if they rated him because it was their pick originally. They didn't rate him. They rated Gothard, who is a NSW boy who they see as a 200+ gamer.
O’Sullivan is a defender though, that’s my point

There must’ve been something they didn’t like about Curtin (Caddy, too)
O'Sullivan and Gothard are NSW boys. Curtin is WA with go-home risk and Caddy is Vic Metro and those high picked Metro boys are often associated with go-home factor.

Only in the AFL, what a shit amateur organisation. Condones tanking on one hand and promotes it on the other.

But so many inconsistent rules, they just can’t help themselves trying to make it complicated

Apparently it was introduced around the time GWS started doing really well because they were worried if they left that open then GWS would be finishing top 4 and then have the potential to have a massive draft as well with Academy players.

Not wanting to be a negative andy, but some of the comments Curtin has said about us picking him are errily similar to this fella

Curtin and Bruhn's reactions aren't even remotely comparable. Everyone but his SIXTEEN YEAR OLD brother looked surprised by generally happy. He immediately put the crows in his insta bio, which isn't exactly something you do that early if you're crying in the toilet about moving away from mum. It just being his family with no friends always makes things a little more awkward looking in comparison as well.

To be honest, I do think there is a go-home factor with Curtin. I’m still happy to club have taken the risk though, elite players don’t just fall on your lap (unless you got a Northern Academy)

It helps to get a player with that risk later in a rebuild. Curtin will walk into a club with a far a more optimistic vibe compared to the club McAcey walked into. Also the list demographics are now far closer to him in age group which will also help.

I think that's the biggest thing in keeping our list together. Particularly in the past we've always been an older team and I'm sure it can lead to some of the draftees feeling like a bit in the minority, even worse if you didn't particularly get along with someone in that small age group too.

Now we got like 1/2 of our list between 18-23, so you're gonna have a bigger base to have a group of guys you get along with.

For sure. Definitely the biggest test this new club culture faces is retaining Curtin.

ok so Curtin obviously would have preferred to stay in WA. Every kid would love to play in their home state with family. He's 3-4 hrs from home....Kids from lincoln would be more isolated.
His GF can stay there if she wants. He will have plenty of suitors here.

We were very lucky that

1) GWS were very comfortable with their current list of tall defenders (plus The Berg arriving next year).

2) GWS we’re not keen to swap pick 8 for what is likely to be a higher pick next year.

3) Only the AFC had the picks to enable them to get the two players they had targeted (Gothard and Leake).

GWS were able to get the players they wanted and banked our second round pick for next year.

The question was; should we then swap pick 8/ Curtin for West Coast’s pick one next year? This could easily go pear shaped with either the Eagles finishing higher than expected in 2024 or Welsh going higher than expected and forcing us to sell the pick.

I think we have the best of both worlds.

1) If Curtin settles well, he could be an absolute elite player.

2) If the go home factor seems to be an issue in 12 months time then a swap with the Eagles pick one is still possible (the three year contract also works in our favour). We would know the number of the pick and roughly where Welsh will be selected when we do the trade.

The final bonus is trading for Petty is less urgent so we can afford to wait another year if Melbourne are being dicks.

I'll take country living over living in any capital city in Australia personally...
Before 2020, I would have disagreed with you.

It would need to be a big country city. Mind you Adelaide used to be like that.

Australia has changed a lot in the last 5-10 years.
