I think Docherty was going to be playing midfield then Boyd went down, he was still going to be playing midfield then Williams went down, now if we pull him from defence I think this takes from the backline a bit too much. Opposition are going to focus heavily on Saad with Docherty and Williams out. Newman will be heavily relied on. I don't think a first year player is going to cut it, nor do any of our other defenders, they just aren't damaging and a big enough threat to the opposition. I think you need three quality smaller running defenders capable of getting big numbers and generating good defensive rebound or it's just not going to work.

Unless we find someone then Docherty is playing in the backline.

As for Marchbank, I would not worry if he is not fully training. He's a naturally good runner, those sort don't need to train as much. He came in off the back of two years out and no preseason to play alright last year. He's coming in after playing and having a preseason. I can't see how he won't be right to go and in better shape than he was last year come round 1.

IMO Marchbank has the running capacity. If he's fit enough, he's probably good enough, he and McGovern may be able to release Docherty for midfield minutes but we will have to see.

IMO we are going to be hanging on Boyd coming back or someone stepping up to come in and fill the third small running defender role, release Docherty a little and help us out in that area, because with no Boyd and no Williams and Docherty potentially having midfield minutes, defensive run will be a minor weakness in our side.
Unfortunately, the answer is Plowman - we need a lockdown player. Boyd would have been much better

Where do you see Kemp.
If he’s not getting his chances now, then when? I would hate for Kemp to be another Dow - at least give Kemp a decent chance to show what he can do!

Walsh will be back within 2-3 games - could do worse than have him 'ease' back in via the HBF

Really interested to see how clubs approach the sub role in 2023.

Generally speaking I think it makes most sense to give the vest to a player capable of either playing through the middle or multiple positions, rather than a specialist in any one position.

I think we start with 2 rucks on the field, and ideally one makes way for some extra run as the game progresses.
I'm looking at the likes of Cottrell, Cuningham, Hollands, maybe even Honey. Philp would have certainly been in my thinking too had he not succumbed to injury.

Voted for Cottrell in the forward group, so I'll chuck another vote on his name here.

Difficult choice. Wanted TDK in best 22, wanted a runner as sub. Coin toss, Cuningham won. But if TDK isn't in side, who is 2nd ruck? JSOS again?
I really enjoy this process every year but it’s unlikely to produce a result which reflects likely selection.
Two rucks is the 23 will definitely be the starting point. SOS/Martin likely to be ones missing out.

Super sub needs to have energy and be able to kick goals. Owies for me. He’ll come in when everyone is tired and hunt, harass and impact the scoreboard. Another shout to kempy as well because he can play pretty much all around the ground.

I voted for Ed and I understand that I'm probably alone on this so I'll explain why he's my sub.

A smart veteran with the aerobic capacity to come in at the first five minutes and give you a game

A smart veteran who can come in during the heat of the battle in the second half and provide composure and hard work.

He can also play as a small to medium sized player in all three parts of the ground.

Finally, I'm not a fan of one of the younger players being used as the sub. They're better off getting a full game in the VFL than potentially rotting on the bench unused.

Ed, Dow and Kemp are my sub choices for this reason. They'll all come in and give high impact performance, and don't really stand to get much out of the VFL aside from ticking their legs over.

Good call. The only time I'd accept a kid being in the sub role is in the bye weeks. Getting senior VFL footy into the likes of Cowans and Ollie Hollands will be important for when they make the transition.

It was tight in the end, but Hamill has won the rights to Doc with 55% of the votes.

O'Brien has entered the team as the 7th midfielder.

We now vote for the inaugural Matty411 Super Sub.
Holy hell. So you think Hamill need our approval for anything. If he wants it, he'll take it.

I've gone with Ed Curnow as sub. Missing games won't hurt him, he's got an older body, doesn't need development and is a natural runner so not losing anything there. He's also got an ability to play most lines. He's an onballer who can play a bit of wing, a bit forward and a bit in defence so he can replace most players in most areas of the field. And he's known senior quality.

Thanks CJMB - great job

That's a decent team, not my best 23 - but, I'm happy to take the consensus team all the same :D

Let's have a look at the differences:
  1. McGov vs Plowman - a fit McGov is so much better than Plowman, and changes how we come out of defense
  2. Newman vs Stocker - Newman is much more reliable
  3. Pitto vs TDK - I personally prefer the potential of TDK, but atm Pitto is our first choice ruckman
  4. Durdin & Motlop vs Honey & Cuningham - we never had a fit Honey & Cuningham anyway, but goal threat wise, Durdin & Motlop is much more dangerous
  5. Acres & LOB vs Dow & Kemp - well, right here - the running capacity has been resolved in one offseason. Even though, personally we need to get games into Kemp, somehow
Exciting times - only one more sleep to see some action!
