Personally I think I would play Doc back, but given it looks like he'll be in the midfield, I'd leave out Kennedy.
Docherty is not an elite midfielder, as much as we are wishing he will be. He is Williams Mk 2 - a great half back who might play an occasional good midfield game.
Won’t stop us playing him as a mid until Walsh gets back, however, because he’s still a better option than Dow/Carroll/Fisher at this point.
I still think we’ll find a way to play Acres and O’Brien on the wings - as Walsh did last year, Docherty/Cerra might start at half forward and blend in as an extra mid once the game gets underway.
More bench time ahead for Fisher/Martin types who are not regular parts of the midfield rotation, a luxury we could only dream of prior to the Hewett/Cerra recruitment and resurrection of Kennedy.

SEN have just released our best 23.
Main takeaway is that you can easily fit another 8 or so into that side.

NO EXCUSES.

Here's the side that SEN put up today.....gotta say I 100% agree with the team that Nicky Neg put together...good Carlton man, knows his onions too :thumbsu:

Pitto v TDK v Mirkov

It's a two horse race with Mirkov not a genuine consideration. He may debut in 2023, but clearly he's well behind the other two.

I think we'll play both Pittonet and TDK. Both have flaws to their game but the new sub rule makes it more palatable to have both out there if fit.
Neither are particularly effective up forward and unless that changes my strong preference will continue to be play just the one of them.

Pitto for me. At this stage I think he's the much more effective option.

I think TDK is ready to step up this year,: age, profile & development - akin to English 2022

Walsh, Doc, or Cerra. Like the Demons did with Brayshaw, shifted him from the middle to a wing

Think Cotts and LOB are fighting it out for a spot on the bench

Kennedy is a lock
If LOB has elevated as much as it seems, he surely starts with a wing to lose. I am very keen to find a spot for Carroll, but fear he has to wait unless he sorts some disposal flaws (interesting his debut game showed impeccable foot skills).
Kennedy is a lock, but is a lock until he is not. Some very good kids coming through may lead to a change in balance. Personally would love Matt to return to having some forward minutes, he is deadly up there and adds a dimension.

The ruck debate, wow. TDK is still largely potential, and most of us see him as the most likely in the near future. However, if they are both fit and ready to go, Pitto has enough runs on the board to command the No. 1 spot for now. Almost certainly we will start the year with them in tandem.

Given Walsh and to some degree Kennedy will be eased back in, LOB will play early, and especially with Cotts having some leg concerns too

It's why I also believe Carroll is in contention for round 1

I don't think either Cerra or Doc are true wingmen, and Walsh would be wasted there.

If we are fully fit, Walsh is the perfect wingman, Cerra or Doc would both be better options than LOB or Cotts

Anyway, competition for spots is a great thing and can't see Voss leaving Kennedy out of the side

Think people need to temper expectations regarding Docherty's midfield role. While he is going to help fill the gap of Walsh (and maybe Kennedy) at season's start - thinking he is going to be at the level required on a consistent basis reminds of the expectations we had of Williams based off one notable game in the midfield for GWS.
There's not a body of evidence that Docherty can play mid or even wing. I'm not saying he can't ... but history tells us - just like Williams - he performs best off half back.
To be fair Doc played the last 2 high pressure games in the midfield last year. Had 29 & 28 touches, 10 & 7 tackles and 6 clearances in both.

Small sample size granted but I thought that he was very good in both. Might be 1 more game than Zac Williams as a sample size, but he will go o.k. whether he plays mid or back.

I think it comes down to what is the best mix of player in the midfield.. We have Cripps & Hewett who play inside, Walsh and Cerra who can play both in and out, we seem to lack someone with genuine pace from the stoppage, not sure Doc is the answer to this.. Williams if he is as fit as reported might be worth looking at again, even if its just for cameos whilst Walsh is missing.

I don't think he's wasted there, especially in a 3 man rotation with Acres and O'Brien. Lots of versatility and looks, and lets him play outside more when it suits, which by my measurement is often. Agree otherwise.

This is what I would like to see for R1:

FB: Docherty Young McGovern
HB: Williams Weitering Saad
C: Acres Cerra O'Brien
HF: C.Durdin C.Curnow Fisher
FF: Silvagni McKay Motlop

R: TDK Cripps Hewett

Int: Kemp, Marchbank, Martin, E.Curnow
Sub: Dow

I don't think Kennedy, Walsh, Boyd, Fogarty, Cuningham, and Cottrell will be ready for round 1, so that's how my liune-up falls.

With the sub role being tactical in nature again and Dow benefitting the least from VFL minutes, I see no issue with trying to build his senior minutes via being subbed in or out of games, particularly in a team without Kennedy and with Ed back in the mix.

The discussion, nor this thread is about round 1, moreso who people would select as a best 23, if all available

Unless TDK has become a ruck beast over the preseason, I'm starting with Pitto. I'd be comfortable with having TDK on the bench as second ruck, forward back up in case of injury or playing SOS elsewhere. Charlie can play smaller if necessary and allow us to play TDK up forward so he's not wasted on the pine.

The bloke can flat out play football. Doesn't matter where you put him he'll make a fist of it.
