And so it should be increased. Benny Gale said the same after 2017GF.

56,000 public seating areas in Shane Warne Stand, Olympic Stand, and City End/Ponsford Stand is reduced to 35K seats (shared between the 2 competing clubs). 21K seats and prime seating I would say is a lot for sponsors, clubs, etc

AFL members (21K seats) is also reduced to 15-16K due to medallion club members having access to the reserve.

Yes, you will still get a lot of members, and supporters from the combined 26K that the AFL distributes to companies, AFL clubs, Medallion Club, etc but there will also be a lot more non-competing supporters in attendance from this 26K.

True rank and file members should be getting a greater share of GF tickets, as kelly said at least 20,000 per competing club.

The problem is the MCC reserve. Laughable that they get access to the GF but did not to the T20 world cup.

MCC members got early access to tickets for the T20 WC from memory.

The size of the MCC reserve doesn't change between the prelim and the GF. As AstuteTiger mentions above, people would be better off looking at all the seats that are available to club members / general public in the prelim but suddenly aren't in the GF.

This goes back to the 1984 stalemate over moving the grand final to Waverly Park.

The then VFL wanted to lease the entire ground - the same way other major events do - but the MCC wouldnt budge and the VicGov were no help.

Do the mcc pay the AFL for their members space during the grand final though? I thought I heard that somewhere previously, but not sure.

If only there was another way than giving the MCG a 245 year contract to host the game

Yes the MCC still have way too much say over the AFL finals and should NEVER forget where most of their income is generated and it ain't from Cricket or even their memberships which bludge of AFL footy!

Can't even name a stand after an AFL player. It's typical cricket snobbery though isn't it?

Pretty bloody pathetic from the snooty MCC and they should NEVER forget without the AFL football the stadium would be no where near its current size.
In a way I'm sorry the VFL/AFL never got the chance to build Waverley Park to its potential but of course with State politicians of both sides in the pocket of the MCC the train line to Waverley that was needed for the stadium to reach its 150,000 potential was never going to be built.
I wonder how true that is nowadays......
The brownlow rated pretty well last night, considering 7 shove it off to secondary channels in half the country.

Some pretty good ideas for fixing the yearly GF ticketing fiasco from Jake Naill.

How the grand final ticket system can be made fairer

Every grand final is replete with stories of luckless players who miss out and, for every player who doesn’t make the cut, there are tens of thousands of rusted-on members of the competing clubs who don’t get into the MCG to see their team on football’s biggest day.
The allocation of grand final tickets has long been a travesty, and one that has been accepted as acceptable by the AFL and MCC; it is viewed, to an extent, as one of those intractable problems that cannot be repaired when 500,000 people want to go to an event that can only fit in 100,000.

The Age - Grand Final Ticket System

Basically just says:
  • increase competing clubs' allocation to at least 40k instead of 34k
  • doesn't specifically state where this would come from but does note corporates and competing clubs get allocations
  • wants MCC to prioritise those who are also members of competing clubs
  • praises AFL Members for their existing prioritisation

Interesting variation on the BVOD ratios

The Saturday games had much lower ratios than the Friday night games

Two possible theories I can think of:

1. The games weren't overlapping and the fox box viewers were more likely to watch both games than the Kayo (i.e. more people are registered for Kayo for just one of the two codes)
2. Brisbane / Queensland fox box viewers (where fox box density might be higher) watched their two main teams sequentially

...and obviously most likely a little from both columns

Wookie. Do the AFL get all the money or do the MCC take a %?
MCC members don't get charged to go to the grand final (except a small booking fee if successful in the ballot). So there is really no percentage for them to keep.

The exception is if they release tickets for restricted members on the day. The MCC charges each restricted member whatever the cost per entrant is that they have to pay to the AFL so it is cost neutral for the MCC. Wookie's number of about $240 sounds about right from my memory but I assume it goes up each year.

So the AFL misses out on hundreds of thousands of dollars because the MCC members pay nothing and lets face facts without the AFL

football at the stadium the MCC yearly membership would not be worth that much just to watch a few cricket matches.

Not sure you can say that.

Ultimately most of the money comes back to the AFL / Clubs or building, maintaining and operating the stadium

Welll no, the MCC pays per entrant to the Grand Final, and apparently limited other AFL finals too.

70% of revenues derived from Football at the MCG go to the AFL and its clubs according to the usage agreement, which after costs, isnt too bad.

If that is the case, would it be fair to say that the Boxing Day Test is the most profitable per day/week for the MCC itself.

It's not about the money, it's about theatregoers getting priority for tickets ahead of club members.

The MCC and AFL have a far too cosy relationship, and it's something I'd love to see investigated. But it won't be done by the Vic government, nor the Vic media. And the football media outside Victoria is too full of idiots. Maybe a senate enquiry one day.
