2023 Crowds and TV/Streaming

They’ve always been bogus when over 100,000.

My assumption (pure speculation) is that they can’t announce more than the capacity due to safety regulations.
One thing I do notice on Grand final day compared to any other day is how crowded standing room is. They clearly allocate way more standing room and bays particular in the Shane Warne Stand. 97,000 last week yet standing room didn't seem as crowded and there were plenty of visual empty seats. Yesterday it was hard to spot any empty seats. I'm not convinced the difference in each games attendance was only 3,000 people.

Seven’s AFL Grand Final goes sky high
Saturday’s game soars, up 22% on 2022

The spectacular 2023 AFL season came to a heart-racing close on Saturday with Collingwood defeating the Brisbane Lions in the 2023 AFL Grand Final at the MCG, live, exclusive and free on Seven and 7plus.

The Seven Network’s coverage of the game reached a national audience of 4.98 million Australians on Channel 7 and 756,000 on 7plus.

The showdown between Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions is the most watched TV program in 2023 outside of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™, scoring an average total television audience of 3.75 million viewers, including 3.3 million viewers nationally and 2.47 million in the capital cities. An additional 441,000 viewers watched live on 7plus – the biggest ever audience for an AFL match on a streaming platform.

Seven’s 2023 AFL Grand Final total audience is up 22% on last year’s Final between Geelong Cats and the Sydney Swans.

Collingwood epic four-point victory over Brisbane, which will go down in history as one of the greatest grand finals of all time, dominated its timeslot in the capital cities with a 92.2% share of viewers during the game, a 94.8% share of 25 to 54s and a 96.7% share in 16 to 39s.

In Melbourne, the Grand Final recorded a 97.4% share of viewers during the game, with Sydney recording a 79.5% share of viewers in its timeslot, and Brisbane a 87.9% share.

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin, said: “Seven’s live, free and exclusive coverage of the unmissable premiership decider reminds us of just how much we all love footy. It’s the passion of the fans that elevates footy from being a sport to a unique spectacle that unites the nation.

“The AFL is Australia’s number one winter sport, it’s a core part of our DNA, and Seven’s expert commentary, insights and coverage showcase the entertainment and exceptional competition of the AFL like no one else.”

Seven West Media Chief Revenue Officer, Kurt Burnette, said: “Seven’s AFL coverage reached an incredible 13.77 million viewers this season, once again delivering unrivalled reach, attention and addressability on a massive scale, across every demographic and every screen. Australia’s leading brands were showcased to 53% of Australians.

“Seven’s delivery of mass culture experiences will only continue as we head into the iconic Bathurst 1000 across Seven and 7plus in October next weekend, with exciting new seasons of SAS Australia, Big Brother and the summer of cricket, coming soon. The biggest change to sports streaming rights in recent history takes place next year, when Seven adds the full digital rights to AFL and cricket. That will bring massive audiences to will also see massive audiences in 2024 and beyond across the screens of Seven, with the new rights unlocking the full audience potential of free sport for advertisers and brands.”

The huge audience numbers for the AFL Grand Final follow a highly successful 2023 Final Series.

Excluding the Grand Final, the Final Series reached 7.9 million Australian nationally, with an average broadcast audience on Seven of 1.1 million.

If only 7 would improve their atrocious coverage it may have gotten more. Some affects mic's inside the stadium to pick up crowd noise and the camera man actually catching the ball traveling torwards goal would be a start. Plus moving the grand final to twilight of course 😅.

Buried at 2:30pm is a bigger roadblock than Seven's less than stellar productions

Yep watching yesterday I was taking note of a few things, the game started at 2.30pm and finished at 5.22pm. The post game missed the players lap of honour on the main channel, as it went to the news. Therefore the perfect start time for me is not 4.30 pm but actually 4.20 pm. It would finish just after 7 in prime time and allow time for the presentation and lap of honour prior to going to the news at 8pm. Plus it mostly cuts out the annoying switch from sun to shade which occurs when starting at 2.30.

How does any of the matter to anyone? The news was just GF coverage, or just change channels.

And the ground was still in part sun until almost the end of the game, so a 4.20pm start is still half sun, half shade.

Because you want to keep the casual viewer for as long as possible, only die hards would change to 7 mate. Also I doubt in nsw and qld where you wanna capture the market as long as possible, would their news have much more than a small spiel at the start, nothing like the Melbourne news, they'd be straight on to talking about the other sports grand final.

2.30pm is simply a crap timeslot for a number of reasons.

Did plan to watch the GF with mates over - though, did have a passing thought to do a beach/outdoorsy day yesterday as it was looking like the best of the beach days here this long weekend (at least in Sydney).

Admittedly, the weather will vary from year to year on GF day but I guess that could be a consideration for some. Probably moreso pronounced from particular markets where AFL is not yet as entrenched, especially if it's a warm long weekend like this one.

Most genuine footy fans could not care less about what the casual viewers do. Don’t take away part of the magic of the day for people who are only ever going to watch once a year. The only beneficiary of that is Channel 7.

They are allowed to sell 10,000 standing room but normally sell only 5000 but I suggest they sell a few more on GF day and that is how the BS 100,024 figure comes about. It is also a like how the airlines over sell their seats.

To a genuine 100,000 crowd on GF day the MCC would have to sell at least 102,000 to make up for the number of people who don't turn up on the day for various reasons!

Weather people like you like it or not the GF will end up at night when the really big TV dollars kick in starting in 2025!

All leading sporting entertainment businesses like the AFL need to maximise their audience at all times and night time is Prime Time and Sat Afternoon is classed as the TV graveyard usually reserved for re runs of crappy old movies.

It is the "casuaL" viewers that also pay for the game by watching the footy on TV and giving CH 7 the high ratings it has achieved this year!

It isn't taking away the magic of the day anyway, I'm a footy fan and if I had a choice I'd have it as twilight regardless of the tv, the tv is just an additional obvious reason.

Getting up there with the Matildas.

The top 5 Capital Cities TV shows on Sat were all the ALF GF and 7 out of the 20 top shows were also the AFL GF = amazing!

Just sensational figures by any measure esp for a hot Sat afternoon when millions of people would have be out and about enjoying the great weather, working and shopping!
Just imagine how many more would have been able to watch at night!

Would love if we were able to find a way to determine the ratings for out of home viewers.

Having the match available on 7plus was a master stroke and something I’m not sure would’ve happened without the success of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Melbourne metro viewers seem low, perhaps thousands went away to regional areas of Victoria for the long weekend, like I did.

Overall, good numbers.

The Age are reporting it a 5.5 Million

"Almost 5.5 million people watched Collingwood’s heart-stopping win over Brisbane in the AFL grand final on Saturday.
Seven’s coverage attracted a national audience of 4.98 million on Channel Seven and 441,000 live online viewers on 7Plus

The tense finish kept viewers until the final siren with a 97.4 per cent share in Melbourne during the game along with 79.5 per cent in its timeslot in Sydney and 87.9 per cent in Brisbane.

Seven also pointed out that it would have more digital rights to AFL and Australian cricket from next year.

So overall what do people think, are the ratings good, bad or on par with what was expected?

I mean the biggest team in the comp v the one team from the 3rd biggest city in Australia, in a close contest till the end.

On par, just can't expect much more in that timeslot really.

They Sydney stat surprises me, I wouldve though that Collingwood having support there wouldve made a difference

It's the magic of the day because it's the tradition, and no other reason.

If it was historically a night grandfinal, and people were trying to change it to a day final, then the same people would be unhappy for the same reason. The "magic" of the event. The traditional way people planned out grand final day wouldn't work any more "ruining" the event. Why change tradition.

Every time a non Victorian asks a question about why certain things are held in Victoria or are seen to favour Victorian audiences, we get "money", "crowds", "TV audience" thrown in our face. If you want X, get a bigger audience. Money talks, it's just the way it is so shut up and suck it up.

Apply the same logic to the GF.
