Buddy deserved the week. He squared up intentionally with the shoulder/elbow, got someone high. He tried it and missed earlier in the game. Has done it plenty before. "Just dumb" is a poor excuse. He needs to be better.

Personally I think Pickett should get more than 3 even if that's the "by the rules" result that should have been applied (and somehow he didn't even get that).
I sort of disagree with Buddy. You have to protect yourself when moving quickly into a bloke near the ball. He might still be old school as a previous poster has suggested. The intent wasn't to hurt the player. In this new world I classify it as careless.

It is 100% careless. He's playing the ball while Collins is playing the man. He's protecting himself, he just ****ed up and got him high

And in the heat of the battle it will happen , the other 2 were charges to the head with no intention to get the ball
I agree.

But the AFL will continue to hand out suspensions in cases like these (where a player is just careless, with no sinister intent), so that duty of care is always at the front of players minds.

And I’m ok with that.

The other two warranted long suspensions. They were awful.

I can't believe I'm saying this but the NRL are much tougher on these types of actions. It would've been a month minimum for all 3. They all had a reasonable opportunity to go into each contest in a safer manner but failed.

So McAdam has got 3 weeks, Buddy 1.
Fair enough in my view.

But still perplexed that this resulted in only a 2 match ban;

No eyes for the ball (which is already downfield), leaves the ground and hits the opponent high.

But because Smith didn't have a HIA it's graded less than McAdam's hit, even though the GWS player was cleared and came back on.

I think this is easily the worst of the 3.
Protect the head. Yea right.

yes ... feet off the ground in a full launch, like a missile ... could've been so very much worse

So deliberate. Hard to imagine how he would react that way. He was having a great game. Unless maybe he was being racially sledged? Just too fired up? Needs to talk to the psychologist, as does McAdam and Bud. Those bumps are all designed to hurt. Too easy to go wrong.

I suspect it was just a moment of madness, likely with no real explanation other than a split second decision to do something stupid in the heat of the moment.

I don’t think there was premeditated malice in it. But here’s hoping he never does it again.

Having said all that, I think 2 weeks is unders.

It's like a split second surge of violent aggression (Kozi and McAdam) whereas Bud's seems more like a dominance act.
Having played myself I get it but as a professional they have to control that aggression and channel it.

My understanding was our game was supposed to be the opening of the new stand and that's why it was scheduled when out was.
Nup. Definitely not. The way their fixture went, this was the genuine first game in Geelong for the year. Rounds 1 and 2 were against too big opponents, then they play away round 3 and easter monday round 4, gather round in round 5.

Initially they were hoping for May 1. Geelong asked the AFL to heavily back end their home fixtures. Then it got pushed back later. Then they didn't sell reserved seat for members. Then it was maybe not at all in 2023 to now definitely not in 2023.
