Prediction 2023 GWS Giants - Predicted best 22, breakout player(s), general player/team discussion & questions

Binga will be in the 22.
I have Binga in my 22, but there were recent reports of Jones firming for a start in round 1 as well as Bedford. Realistically, that can only be at Binga's expense if true. Hence the wording I used in my post. We shall see soon enough!

Yeah, Kennedy I hadn't thought of, but he can fill half back and wing roles, and if he's training forward that would give him capacity to be a decent sub.

There is no standout candidate for the Giants.

Having lost a pair of guns in Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, their midfield stocks aren’t quite as deep as they have been previously so a fringe or younger on-baller might not be the obvious option as it was in 2022. The Giants also recruited small forward Toby Bedford in the off-season and he could potentially push ahead of a player like Brent Daniels.

Daniels missed all of last season due to persistent hamstring injuries, so naturally the club would want to ease him back into the fray of senior footy. That scenario makes him suited perfectly to the sub role. The 23-year-old could come on and make an impact late in games with his dynamism up forward and his strength around the ball.

Similarly, experienced forward Daniel Lloyd is one who might not get a start in GWS’ forward line so could be used tactically off the bench.

Callum Brown’s versatility is appealing as a tactical sub, emerging talent Conor Stone, who like Daniels had hamstring issues last year, is also an option, as is 19-year-old Cooper Hamilton.

What are the thoughts of GWS posters?

If Bedford and Darcy Jones both push ahead of Brent Daniels, then Binga could fit as a tactical subsitute. He's experienced, would bring zip and energy when he came on, and could slot into forward or midfield roles.

Not sure Dan Lloyd holds a similar value as tactical sub, except for his general AFL knowledge and experience.

Callum Brown I could agree with having some flexibility to cover positions - although when the VFL team is playing he probably needs to be playing to build his own experience. I'd similarly say that Stone & Hamilton would be not well served being the sub for too many weeks - they need game time to demonstrate they're ready to break into the best 22. However, as two of a longer list of players who roll through the sub position, they'd be OK.

What about Cal Ward? If he starts finding in harder to run out a full game, could we use him in the sub role? The issue would be he's primarily a mid ... and can he cover enough positions off the sub's bench? But he did play half back last year, and we're apparently trialling him forward this year, so could that point to possible use in this role.

The other suggestion I would have is James Peatling. Can reliably play both forward and half back roles, and therefore also plug a midfield loss with some judicious rearrangement of team positions/roles. You'd never want to tag the one player in this role too many times in a row, but Peatling strikes me as a decent option if he doesn't make the team.
For pure versatility it has to be Hamtilon or Peatling if they're not in the best 22 for me

Peatling or XO would work as the sub for me.
I don't see XO making the best 22 but he's a ball of energy when he gets out there and could slot in wherever.
I'd assume most teams will either opt for a player that can play on all three lines with pace and I think Peatling fills that.
Hamilton also an option.
I initially didn't think Jones would play early but people are high on his chance to play...don't think he will beat out Daniels though.

Yeah I thought Jones' frame would limit his playing time his first year and especially early in the season but he must be really impressing to be in the frame for an early debut

I am liking the reports that Finn Callaghan has been training up a storm in pre-season. Firstly, it means he's injury-free, and secondly, it gives hope that he can fulfill his promise. If he can put all of his talent together, he can become a real weapon for GWS.

Just BTW ...

Here are 10 players we predict will take their game to the next level in 2023.

7. Finn Callaghan

Plenty of room has opened up in the midfield at GWS for players to make their name known. Tom Green had his breakout last season, so it may be another young gun's turn to do so. In comes Finn Callaghan.

The soon-to-be 20-year-old played just the five games last year, but fell out of the team when Leon Cameron departed. A troublesome foot injury also bothered him since the pre-season, which he has since had surgery on. Under Adam Kingsley, a focus on youth should favour the classy midfielder. Now injury free and with a few vacancies in the engine room, Callaghan should break into the team.

He is 33:1 to win the rising star. I think this os very good value, I would think he is more chance than anybody other than Ashcroft .
I might take that. They always forget second year players.

Brownlow: Josh Kelly
Coleman: Toby Greene
Rising Star: Aaron Cadman

GWS doesn’t boast any favourites in the markets, however Josh Kelly has proven to be a consistent vote-getter throughout his career and could make an appearance in the Brownlow picture with a strong season. Kelly’s highest-place finish was 5th in 2017, and it would take a stellar year to top that mark.

Toby Greene is a star with an excellent ability to hit the scoreboard, however is yet to put together a complete season that sees him in Coleman contention, often missing too many games to tally enough.

Taken first overall in the 2022 National Draft, a Rising Star win would be a dream start to Aaron Cadman’s career, cementing himself as key forward of the Giants’ future.

Finn Callaghan is easily our best chance for rising star

According to the Phthagorean analysis, we are predicted to improve from last year. However, once the losses of Hopper, Taranto and Bruhn are factored in, they predict even a 7 win season for us in 2023 would be a “reasonable surprise”!

I think our losses over the off-season are probably a bit overrated in the general mainstream landscape. I'm sure most of the those guys will go on to have much more successful seasons this year then last year with us but pretty much all of them outside of Taranto were quite limited in what they were able to contribute last year, Hopper was injured most of the year and we only got a couple of good games from him, Bruhn was played as a forward most of the year or was out of the side so wasn't able to contribute much there, Hill wasn't particually effective and then missed a good chunk of the season with his cancer battle (seems to be doing well now which is great to see) and then Taranto was legitimately great and that'll take some covering for but think we can. If Kingsley is a good coach, I think the benefits he brings will outweigh the losses of last year.

But I've already got my Lions premiership tattoo. :(
I've got the lions at 100-1 (maximum was $10)on an introductory offer, so I m on them hard as well!
I also have the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super bowl and Roosters in the NRL

You've probably got a buttload of them?

2020. 2021. 2022. 2023. At the least?
Nah this is the first year where I felt comfortable in my favouritism. Goes well with my 2017 GWS premiership tattoo.

Bad luck on the Roosters at least.

Interesting re: himmleberg playing forward, teamed with Hogan who can’t play anywhere else & Riccardi in his 4th year and there’s not a lot of room for Cadman to get too many games.

Considering Hogan's injury history and Riccardi not showing consistent AFL level play, if Cadman is playing well in the 2s then there's probably going to be a chance for him

I think Cadman will play some games as player23. If we play himmberg as a swingman, then there is room for him, Hogan, Riccardi, Cadman.
If we play only 1 ruck, who will be the backup ruckman.
