There's no point getting thumped by 100+ points though. And a half fit Cameron is essential to being competitive if we're already down Hawkins and Close in the forward line.

So something like

Ins - Guthrie, Knevitt, Conway, Dempsey, Mullin
Outs - Dangerfield, Sav, Hawkins, Close, Bews

That gets 4 more kids in while playing a team that shouldn't get completely smacked off the park.
Pretty sure Jezza will be in surgery before the end of the week. And we might find 1-2 others join him.

So I think your ins are spot on (although they may choose Stanley if they don’t think it is fair on Conway? I hope they pick Toby but they might think he is not quite at fitness level to play English?)…but the outs will include Jezza, Duncan (suspended), Close, Sav and 1-2 others that go in for surgery this week

Could be an interesting game!!

If Cameron is out, I would be happy having Stanley as a 2nd KPF with Hawkins and let Conway take the bulk of the ruck, and if Conway is out of his depth sub him at HT and let Stanley take over.

If Stanley doesn't get up, you have to back in Conway/Neale as rucks/resting forwards and leave SDK in defence.

Cats players Esava Ratugolea, Tom Hawkins and Brad Close are set to miss Saturday’s Round 24 clash with Western Bulldogs following injuries sustained last weekend against St Kilda.

Geelong Cats General Manager of Football Simon Lloyd said the trio had begun their respective rehabilitation programs and shifted their focus to next year.

Esava Ratugolea injured his hamstring, which was obvious during the game. It’s actually the opposite side to the injury he sustained mid-season,” Lloyd said.

Tom Hawkins had a reoccurrence of his hamstring injury, so that’s relatively minor.

“Brad Close also had a moderate-grade lateral ankle injury, so he was unable to return to the field.

“So those three players will begin their rehabilitation program – or they already have begun – and hopefully will start to recover and shift focus on to next season.”

Rhys Stanley’s availability will be assessed later in the week as he looks to return from an adductor injury.

“He’s running at the moment. He’ll be tested with change of direction and other aspects and measures he needs to tick off throughout the week, and we’ll assess his availability in the latter part of this week,” Lloyd said.

Cameron Guthrie and Toby Conway both made their return through the VFL last week, with Guthrie returning after 16 weeks out with a foot injury, while Conway looked impressive after a short stint sidelined with an ankle injury.

“Cam goth through the game, so (it was) a successful return from a foot injury, which is really positive – albeit it was on modified, reduced game time,” Lloyd said.

“We’ll probably go a more conservative approach with Cam this week, but again, that decision still needs to be made and assessed throughout the course of the week.

“Toby Conway had a minor ankle injury the previous week and returned and looked really good. He was great in the contest, around the ground he had a big influence and (it was) a really positive game from Toby.”

With Finals now out of the equation for the Cats, the Club will take a proactive approach with some players as we look ahead to the 2024 season.

“We’ve needed to be proactive in regard to some of the decisions we’ve needed to make, and Mark Blicavs had surgery on his shoulder yesterday,” Lloyd said.

Gary Rohan will have surgery on his ankle on Wednesday, and Jeremy Cameron will have surgery on his troublesome AC joint.

“It’s been incredible he’s been able to keep going and performing at a certain level, and it’s now time to be proactive with that surgery on his AC joint, which will be on Thursday.”

There you go.

So outs from the Saints game will be Hawkins, Cameron, Ratugolea, Close and Duncan (susp).

Sounds like Guthrie probably won't play, Stanley is doubtful too, and Blicavs & Rohan have already been mothballed.

Potential ins: Stanley/Conway, Menegola, Dempsey, Knevitt and Mullin?

Ideally we'd have another tall with Hawkins, Cameron and Ratugolea all out, but the only other available tall we have on the list is Phoenix Foster and from all accounts he is still a fair way off.

I'd be very tempted to give Conway a debut and rather than rush Stanley back for a meaningless game, and I'd also like to see Danger take an early holiday given how much he's been struggling of late. Give another kid a shot... maybe Hardie?

Wonder how we will line up this week:
FB: Kolo SDK Bews
HB: Stewart ZGuthrie Bowes

Back 6 feels like it picks itself, I would rather see how Bowes goes in midfield and see if he is much chop there, but I think the MC see him as Duncans successor so we probably see this line up.

MF: Smith Bruhn Holmes (if not injured)/Menegola (if getting a retirement game)/Knevitt (they keep throwing him there).
Smith will take a wing, and Bruhn will be one of the many rotated through the middle. Who knows who ends up on the other wing.

HF: Miers OHenry Dempsey/Simpson
FF: Neale Stengle Whyte/Dangerfield
(depends on what role they want Danger playing)
Forward line was the hardest part to work out. Dempsey should go straight in, Simpson when he was playing well earlier in the season was as a forward as well. I put Whyte in there because who knows who else they use there. Maybe instead of Whyte in the team, Danger spends more time forward and Whyte doesn't play at all.

Fol: Conway Atkins Dangerfield
Surely Conway debuts, especially if Stanley is out. Surely. And if Stanley is in, play them both and put Stanley forward when resting because with no Hawk and Jezza that forwardline is small and inexperienced.
Atkins and likely Danger starting mid unless they want him forward and give someone else the experience.

IC: Really could be anyone. If Menegola says he is retiring I assume he is in. If no Stanley, maybe they have Ceglar on the bench for a farewell and to help Conway. Then you have Whyte/Hardie/Knevitt/Clohesy who were good in the VFL, Kroeger and Riccardi weren't too bad either.
O'Connor will definitely be selected, thats 1/4 on the bench and a sub.
Parfitt likely plays as well.
And the MC seem to love Mullin, although I would rather we give a debut to Clohesy/Kroeger/Riccardi/Hardi before we give another game to Mullin.

Kroeger is listed as knee season on afl site?

Would like to see Hardie picked, even as a sub, to see what he can do. Has shown a some reasonable ability albeit in patches of VFL games. Also be nice to give a MSD an AFL game (rather than potentially another Zane W exit with nothing to show for it).

Apologies if it has already been mentioned

But there was a street interview with Cameron - Tim Watson 7 news

And Jeremy said it was the accidental hit from Rohan that wrecked his shoulder - couldnt brace for the impact when hitting the ground - because he was knocked out- pain killers for the last 10 weeks just to play

That sums up Geelongs year of hell - the best Geel player seriously hurt/restricted from an accidental hit from another Geel player

whatever damn wall held the injuries back in 22 broke in 23 and flooded the plains with everything and anything injury related.

Its been a rough one for sure - and we dont know all of it by a long shot.

And the player causing the accident also then got injured for most of the rest of the year.

The cricket analogy is that he ran out the best batsmen and then got out next over to rub it in

An opposition supporter suggested to me this week, that Geelong's injuries this year (to our veterans especially) in a broad sense is possibly that over the last 10-12 years they've played an extra season of football to other teams' players and that they've had up to 4 weeks less time off at end of season, it all adds up. Too much success brings failure eventually.

It’s quite a simple theory, one which has escaped the media who are more salivating at the decline this year and not acknowledging how impacted by injuries and preparation we were

Some of those are on our own board.

There has been a lot of "sure there were injuries and close losses but we were miles off it anyway and have no chance next season"

Great article highlighting the impact of injuries on our season.

Geelong's best contest set-ups last year often worked with one or two midfielders blocking for Dangerfield or Guthrie working downhill against overmatched defenders. That situation has been harder to engineer this year.

Guthrie's absence has deprived them of a two-sided midfielder to attack and defend with equal skill.

Injuries to a degree yes, and some of those were absolutely beyond anyone's control - especially Guthrie and DeKoning. Unfortunately there are always the odd footy injuries that pop up and they both copped them.

Preparation though, if that includes pre-season, that's on the club.

It covers some very good points. However when talking about Guthrie he doesn't mention we still lost our first three games when Guthrie was playing (one of those to Gold Coast), and this line about Jack Henry is interesting:

"On the eve of the season, Henry went down with a foot injury. The hopes were that he would return at some point this year but that hasn't eventuated."

Yes it did. He played 11 games. Unfortunately he got hurt again versus Port but he definitely did return. That's pretty basic to check.

Great observation there. And Dangerfield, especially since he returned from his hammy (the rib/lung ramming first game back was a tough pill to swallow), hasn't been able to be managed in the same burst capacity. He went flat knacker until the hammy injury round 4-8 to resuscitate our season early. Last year we utilised that at key moments in the season and then for finals. Bruhn was understandably not yet as competent as 2022 Selwood as far as relieving Danger too.

I also said it a few times this year: when Atkins and Blicavs were both in beast mode at the same time we looked really good. Especially if we had Holmes and Dangerfield in the side to capitalise with bursts. For whatever reasons, and injuries/lack of cohesion may be one of them, this combo simply didn't come together often enough this year. Blicavs started strong, Atkins finished strong and Holmes was up and down especially as the year wore on.

You can't guarantee these areas will resolve themselves but a big pre season, a better injury run, Guthrie back and (hopefully) a midfield recruit ought to help a whole lot.

Our injuries remind me of McGrath in the 05 Ashes series.
Middle of the year we were flying, on a great run, then we got hit with "someone standing on a stray cricket ball" in the luck department, and we did what Aus did in 05.
Close losses in the Ashes where injured players like McGrath make the difference between success and failure. Close losses in the 2023 season where injured players like points to injury list make the difference between success and failure.

Yep and both Dangerfield and Selwood were (very, very sensibly) used off the bench a lot last year. Excellent management of older players. The downstream effect of Atkins and Close not being at the same level this year among others, was more work for more veterans. They can maintain it for a game or two, but not all season long, as we saw last Friday.

I still can’t believe the carry on from England and the entire team being knighted off the back of that ashes win

Way way over the top

To be fair, if we got all our injured players back, and for the sake of argument they all came back in the form they were in end of 2022, we are still a couple of midfielders short. Selwood is worth at least 2 quality players for leadership and impact.

And that doesn't take into account that maybe Guthrie returns to his 2022 form, but maybe someone like Danger doesn't. If we don't strengthen the midfield at minimum we will be pushing shit uphill again next season.
