We have Hinge, Dawson, Sholl, Sloane, Cook, Milera and Jones who could play or be developed to play wing. We don’t need a reject to play that position.

If Dawson isn’t a lock for one wing position then Nicks is an idiot, if Dawson plays defence with our defensive options then Nicks is a *wot
Personally, I'm less confident of the idea of Dawson on a wing. Wingmen spend more time at a distance from the game holding space than they do actually affecting it. I worry he'll spend most of his time watching the game from the other wing.

My memory of his first game for us is him starting on a wing and he couldn't get near it.

He didn’t have much of a lead in. He has played that well for Sydney.

Quality wingman can consistently impact the game. Smith, Langdon, Amon and Seeds got plenty of the ball in his last season.

As a winger he can be a marking target for us from the kick outs. He can also be a marking target as we leave defence and would be a hard match for any winger due to his height.

Then we’ve got the offensive weapon of shots on goal with his leg and delivering to our forwards.

You can have a game plan the constantly involves him

Why pissfart around play him in the midfield as the 2nd receiver and deliverer...if not I'm playing him as the half back sweeper that can turn defence into attack with his precise penetrating kicking.

I don't think he's got it in him, but I want to see him at and around the stoppage. What if he's the next Bont? He's just so damn good that I want to rule that out before we settle him as a wing or half back. Bont doesn't move like a typical inside mid either, looks like he's sleep walking as he somehow can't get caught whilst delivering forward with precision. Dawson might be like that too.

Wing doesn’t mean he’s going to stay on the wing and that’s it, he will spend plenty of time in defence and can do what you’re suggesting.

Playing on the wing brings all his strengths into play and I’d love him being the one delivering to our forwards and having shots on goal.

Playing in defence he will have to defend, which is a waste of his talent.

Finally, we’ve got a heap of players we need to try and fit into defence.

We're not in a phase that requires us to have a backup key defender. We played 1 KPD last year by choice anyway, so I don't think they're worried enough to use a list spot on some slug just so we've got another 195cm body on the list. We shouldn't be blowing list spots on known fringe/mediocre players, regardless of where they play. That said, it apears that we're doing exactly that with Brown, as we did with Turner. But worrying about depth in any position is premature as far as I'm concerned.

Left field options would be EH and maybe even Strachan to ruck with ROB having a crack. Plus we might as well expose Borlase before he's cut loose if injuries were to hit. It's not like it's going to cost us a flag or even a finals win this year.
Exactly - play Borlaise if needed and there’s always mid season draft

Can someone tell me why Poulter was dropped and why neither SA club had a crack, what's his deficiencies? Given we have invited Tyler Brown, who was training with Poulter at Western Bulldogs, there must be some issues.

Sure, but that makes him a midfielder or a half back, not a wingmen.

Half backs push up to the contest, wingmen keep spacing on the outside.
Problem is every time we push Dawson into defence his opponent instantly drags him back to the goal square

Yep, I don't mind him on a HBF but we played him too deep in defence last year. If we are having him as our kick out of defence I'd much rather that being on the cusp or just outside the 50, not from the goal square like this year

His weapons are 1. Kick 2. Mark, I think? There definitely a place for those in the back half. Sometimes the hardest and most damaging possession is the difficult kick from half back which opens up the play. Not convinced he’d be more useful as a mid.

Reckon you’re underselling Smiths impact in the Hawks era and Geelongs flag, plus Langdon in Melbourne’s and Amon was huge the year Port choked in the prelim.

A gun winger is massive.

Lets be real, we badly need a mature age KPD to rookie on given cupboard is very bare now. Literally we would have to be looking at Borlase if Murray or Butts go down or have an extended run out of form.

If rankine ends up on the other wing as that outside mid, we will be dangerous on both sides of the ground imo

So it’s a rebuild and yet we are adding a mid that’s been delisted at another club. Your point makes no sense in that context.

A rebuild means you build the list. We’ve chosen not to build our key position defenders. Hard to see how you can not understand the flaw in what we are doing.

Jeez Kramer, you are usually less pot-shotty than this!

I’m saying “We are in the middle of a rebuild” … we are not polishing up, we are not putting on the icing, we are are not even close to that - and yet you are upset about us trying a player at the very bottom of our playing list that has potential upside.

You are upset that this spot wasn’t given to a potential KPD … a potential KPD that is still available at the end of January. ALL of the players taken at this stage are low percentage choices.

Which player would you have offered the spot to? For reference.

If you want to stay angry that “we let it get this way” by losing Billy and Fish - I’m confused again. Billy was not what we needed, Fish was a write off.

I think you are putting way way too much weight into this decision.

Do you really think we are pushing out the end of our rebuild because of Brown? Really? You must have some awesome foresight to see that chain of events.

I’m happy that the guy we are giving a shot looks different to what we have, good evasion - good disposal - good pedigree.

Our backline looks fine to me. It is impossible to create a perfect list, but surely you can look no further than the last successful rebuild of Richmond (Richmond premiership teams - Wikipedia) to see that?
