I would target a running player for this spot, as we were already a little concerned in that department before Williams went down (Philp hurts here as well)

Dangerous medium forwards are Carlton's biggest deficiency now. Fisher provides no threat or pressure as a forward, Martin(when switched on) is our only quick, hard tackling, marking, threatening medium forward. Cunners, if he can put his injury issues behind him, might allow us to use Martin elsewhere.
Lets play specialist half forwards near goal, not excess midfielders like Walsh last year.

Here's an idea if we run short on half back types. We repurpose Carroll to that position. Reckon he would take to it very well. Is probably going to be playing VFL as a midfielder until a spot opens up and our midfield is pretty strong.
Carrol is not a reliable enough kick to put on a half back flank. Cunningham-maybe-Kemp or newman are the best bet if docherty remains on ball

Yep Cowan, a bit taller than Williams and a lot younger. The Woods had no problem playing young Daicos on HBF.
Cowan has played against men, it's an ideal opening for him.
Daicos is a generational player like Walsh, he’d get the footy wherever you put him, not a real apples v apples comparison but I can see your point.

I really hope Cowan can be ready enough for that role, but Boyd would be a lock if he was available Rd 1.

Can we play both Marchy and Gov back in the one back half, where it looks like this:

Newman, Young, Marchy
Saad, Weiters, Gov

Seventh defender Boyd.

Gov is quick, a great user and strong overhead. Marchy the lock down 3rd tall back there.

Anxious to keep Doch as a mid.

Thoughts?

Cowan off a HB flank is the reason we drafted him. So simply fast forward the process and play him there. He’s more advanced than most draftees.

For the Williams spot, as an untried, I’d take a punt on Szybkowski. Good link up player. Could potentially play HB/Wing/Mid. Touted as Top 30 and seems there’s reasons he slipped out, but who’s never transgressed? As a tried player, Collier-Dawkins interests. Can play multiple positions.

Other than Zac, is it possible our injuries early might serve us later in the season as we come roaring back to near full strength? Zac & Gov came back strong last year. Anyone?

Yes it's possible, but that also assumes we won't get any more injuries.

Good luck with that...

Sam Walsh won't be return as soon as most us think I reckon.

Hoping either Kemp or Carroll are giving more senior opportunities in Zac's absence (Carroll esp should play at least 15 plus games in the seniors next season, I just jope Kemp's body holds up)

Do we get a Mid Season Draft selection now that Z-Will's well being swilled for the entire season ?
As I say, only positive in LTIs like Zac's is giving a talented young kid or two more time to shine in the seniors. Can only hope they can seize the day.

Zac missing will create a rethink in our defensive structures. Only Saad has anything like his rebounding skills and they were preparing as a double act.

Will we rethink or try to replace him with someone in a similar role. I only see repurposing Gov as having similar disposal skills or Hollands replacing the run and smarts. Cowan is the HBF “heir”, but is more Doc than Zac.

Certainly we could benefit from fresh players entering the mix as the season rolls on. Not sure they will want to amend structures too much during season though.

Wouldn’t it be likely we will have a spot open for the mid season draft even if we take someone now? It looks like Philp and Williams are out and that before we factor in any other in season injuries.

Currwntly we can pick anyone we want, in the MSD even if there was someone we wanted, we need to hope they make it to us.

Pick now I say
Also gives the recruit more time to gel with the team and the game plan. Hard for someone to come in at the midway point and have an impact.

Markov requested a trade to the Suns and Richmond got a 3rd rounder for him.
True, but a future 3rd from the Gold Coast is a bit like confetti at a wedding - something to be thrown out at random- particularly when the AFL are handing them out for free.

My point remains that Markov has never been much good. Whilst he plays the same position required I would hope that we could cast the net for better rewards.

Plenty of options on the list for ZWill’s position. No need to replace him with someone not on an AFL list..
I think the replacement will likely play in our VFL side, replacing whoever steps up to 1sts for Zac. Pretty hard to find best 22 players not on lists at this time of the year. Our VFL team is looking pretty shakey with all these injuries so getting in another solid player wont hurt

It doesn’t have to be a direct replacement. Going into a season with one less player than everyone else is nonsensical especially given the likelihood of more injuries as the season goes.

We should be taking this free hit.

It will be interesting to see whether we look inside or outside our VFL squad. The pros of taking a player from within is they will already know the gameplan and have been training with the side, however, whoever we pick is likely not playing 1sts anytime soon anyway. If we take someone from our VFL side, it doesn't really improve the strength of our reserves like it would if we go external (given they would have been playing for our vfl side anyway)

Ben Crocker knows the gameplan, is only 25, durable and plays in a position of need.
He would be one of the very few players available that might actually play some AFL games for us this year.
I really like Cahill, but we'd then have a logjam of small forwards.

Does anyone know who is training with us atm. I heard Ben Ronke signed with the vfl team and I’ve always liked Ned Cahill and Ben Crocker. Luke parks is still on the vfl list too.

Anyone outside of this group that could potentially take one of the 3 SSP spots we may have with LTI??
Gee I hope we don't recruit Parks for a third time! Move on.

Prefer they give someone else a go
