Ben Crocker knows the gameplan, is only 25, durable and plays in a position of need.
He would be one of the very few players available that might actually play some AFL games for us this year.
I really like Cahill, but we'd then have a logjam of small forwards.

Crocker is terrific at the lower level but has struggled twice in an AFL environment.

At 26 I’m not sure that changes.

Also not sure what position he fills that we desperately need. He’s a key forward in a medium forwards body.

It doesn’t have to be a direct replacement. Going into a season with one less player than everyone else is nonsensical especially given the likelihood of more injuries as the season goes.

We should be taking this free hit.
Not suggesting we shouldn’t. I just don’t think we need to find a player to replace Williams specifically.

There’s quite a few kids that went undrafted on reason or another…

Who did our recruiters liked? Give them a go in VFL and see if we can uncover a late gem?

Not to mention his pressure and defensive game isn't great at VFL level, reckon he'd be a liability in the AFL.

His like-for-like would be silvagni but without the workrate.

Can kick a goal though.

Not a big fan of the prospect of picking up Markov. The bloke can look impressive on the run, fast and a big boy. He has, however been fringe at two clubs. We are seemingly loaded with defensive small/medium options.

Suggests to me that we want to play as we have rehearsed with two attacking, rebound HBF’s. Trouble is Zac has elite disposal and Markov is ordinary at best.

We have multiple blokes in the twos who could fill a role if we want a defensive option. Surely we want to develop our youngsters rather than grabbing a journeyman gap filler.

Hoping it is just conjecture at this stage. I was somewhat a fan of Markov at his draft year(s), has some admirable traits, but at this stage of his career, we are not fixing his shortcomings in disposal and decision making. I am very focussed on improving connectivity, so am perplexed. Would allow a more similar game style/structure in the seconds I suppose.

We're speed deficient already. Losing a player like Williams makes us more so. Not surprised we're considering someone with pace.
Saad and Guv express.

Marchbank and Young not slow....Newman's no slouch?

The ability to use the ball quickly - and wisely - far more important than 'speed'.

Would hardly describe Marchbank, Young or Newman as fast. Marchy can run all day, but he's not particularly quick to my eyes. Newman is definitely not a fast runner for someone his size.

If Markov does sign with us, does he move straight into the back 6 - or is it a more even fight with Cowan for the spot (assuming Doc stays with the mids)?

Markov can play. I was surprised he was let go by the Suns.

Sure there are areas of weakness in his game but let's not forget it's February, if we're adding to the list now we're not bringing in anyone without.

We were already short on players with serious pace, Williams going down only exacerbates that issue. Markov is seriously quick, so we're clearly keen to move the ball with speed particularly out of the defensive 50.

I have no problem with this at all. At worst it doesn't work and we part ways in 8 months time.

Not sure why selecting Markov = we're not developing our youngsters.

We have enough good players on our list now that we can delist some talented players that aren't durable. In previous years while it was a good idea in theory I can understand why the club kept injury prone players that we thought could contribute to the first team vs keeping or drafting guys that were fit but couldn't.

I don't think Kemp belongs on that list. He has been durable since recovering from his ACL. Boyd is sneaking under the radar as an injury prone player. Hopefully he gets a clean run after this ankle.
While I agree that we need to start looking at the players who have spent less time available for selection than they have being selected, taking a risk on a supplementary draft/DFA/mid season selection is markedly different than spending upwards of 700 thousand on Williams, Martin and Gov.

The problem with those selections is that you are paying for them to be on the park. More speculative selections - Boyd, Mirkov - can be afforded a little more leeway to see them come good because per capita they're not charging as much for a list position. If you're paying more than the average AFL wage you need that player on the park, otherwise you're not using your list as effectively as you could be.

The problem is compounded when medium risk (from a opportunity cost perspective) options - Marchbank and Cuningham - both also struggle to be available for more than 50% of games.

Sinking further costs into it is not healthy, but you can't just cut them either. The tragedy of it is you can see what each player could be, if only they could step onto the park more often than not.

Agree with this, we went to the draft and focused heavily on young players this year, based on the current injury situation, we probably need some ready made players, we can reassess at year end depending on these ongoing concerns with a large number of injury prone players on our list right now which potentially will free up a number of list spots.

Interesting that you write Crocker off for struggling twice in an AFL environment but have no problem with Markov.

Markov is an athlete with limited AFL ability.

Markov has elite speed (top 10 repeat sprints at his draft combine), endurance (top 10 shuttle run), and a decent kick (scored 30/30 goal kicking test). Can play HB, wing, HF

At times he does run himself into trouble and or doesn't release quickly enough to the next attacking line

With Boyd out for at least half a season, Williams for the year, targeting Markov makes sense
