just hoping all the posters who are jettisoning the blokes who can't get on the park, are prepared for the strong possibility at least one or possibly more will get it together and flourish at another club.........I imagine that possibility is gonna be met with the same supportive commentary as they were flung out of the place.....

Very true, but we can't continue to carry so many injury prone types

I’m interested in your take on how we handle the injury prone guys this year if we do end up losing Dow and Kemp for very little. What do you think we will do there? Feel like it’s one of our biggest list challenges. As much as I love Marchbank, Cuningham, Martin etc, I don’t think we can carry them on the list anymore as it keeps putting us behind the eight ball from the start of the year.
As frustrating as they have been to date, it (nearly) all depends on what happens in the back end of the year. There are 18 games to go, and then finals.

If any of those guys get fit, and then cement their spot in the team, there's not going to be an issue re-signing them. Alternatively, if they can't string some senior footy together then time's up. At least for the out-of-contract guys, we're (almost certainly) stuck with Martin.

Have touched on this over the last 2 off seasons

Will we lose types like Fogarty and the other end of the scale like Ed types.

Think Dow will look for opportunities elsewhere, but don't think he is a starting 3-4 mid in any side, so that struggle will continue elsewhere

Think we retain Kemp based on spots opening up

So, grouping injury prone players in types, I would move on the following

1 of Gov, Marchbank
2 of Cuners, Martin, Philp

Honey might survive another year

So list departures at a minimum

Fogarty, Ed, Dow, Plow or Akuei, plus 3 of the injury prone

Yep, I agree for the most part.
Fog, Ed, Plow, Marchy, Cuners, Philp - delist.
Dow - token pick in trade
Kemp (think he will leave) - token pick in trade

8 players out and the two that may be traded will be token picks. Even if one of Dow or Kemp stays that’s 7 off the list. Definitely needs to be done to clean up our injury prone list but damn Austin will have to have an amazing draft.

Perhaps not as hard as it would seem.

Cincotta is already on the list in place of Philp, so we can just extend his contract and that's one less list spot to fill.

Ed (rookie) - retire
Fog
Cunners
Plow
Marchy
Philp
Dow/Kemp - in my view, we should only let one go, and only if they want to go. Happy to retain both on a low salary provided we're prepared to give them a chance to play.

-1 Rookie
-5 Senior
-1 Senior (optional)

Retain Cincotta on the rookie list.
Elevate Boyd and Cottrell from the rookie to senior list.

Means we need to fill 3 spots on the senior list, maybe 4.
And 2 spots to fill on the rookie list.

That's not overly difficult when we can take 2-3 picks at the Nartional draft, maybe sign a cheap DFA, and then the token two rookies on one-year deals.

Pretty scary to think we’ll be turning over a quarter of the list again.

The Camporeale boys will be playing their first season with Carlton in 2025 - if they're good enough and if they nominate Carlton. Will be great to keep an eye on them but I don't think they should factor into list management plans just yet.
They absolutely should by draft time this year. If they are progressing well, their roles as wingmen/potential HBF are catered for at the moment.

We recruited mature ager Acres, and two kids to upgrade our wings in the short term. One is outstanding and the second shaping up very well in the twos. Already invested in LOB and Cottrell, I would back us to keep one longer term.

Providing the Campo boys progress well, we surely don’t invest in that area. That does not preclude a hybrid in/out mid. Not unrealistic we could part with three of four or even five depth midfielders at the end of the year. (Dow, Fogarty, Ed, Philp and Cuningham all in question) Replacements surely come in if it plays out as it seems.

I remain amazed Kemp is not getting some midfield minutes in preparation. (He has mentioned multiple times that midfield is where he saw himself)

I seriously doubt we move on 11 players
This.

We've got one first round pick, then two fourth-round picks (likely 60+). We'll probably try and pick up a couple more picks around the 15-30 if we can find a club willing to do a swap for 2024 picks. But that's gonna be tricky. At most would take 5 picks at the draft - more likely to be around 3. Maybe we pick up a cheap player or two through trades or a delisted player. Doubt we'll see any more than 6 new players at the club total. Add to that Cincotta & O'Keeffe, and we need to delist 8. Can't see it being more than that.

More practical than many suggestions.

It is time to add the voice of reason to these posts advocating massive changes this season.

It has been done to death who is out of contract this year. Suggestions of big delisting and/or trades need to be tempered somewhat.

We have traded out of the second and third rounds. Without some exceptional trading, we won’t have the draft currency to replenish massively. We will be in a window to upgrade as many as four rookies.

Current rookies:
Ed Curnow (OOC)
Alex Mirkov (Contracted end 2024)
Jordan Boyd (Contracted end 2024)
Lachie O’Brien (Contracted end 2024)
Matthew Cottrell (Contracted end 2024)
Sam Durdin (OOC)
Hudson O’Keeffe (OOC)
Alex Cincotta (OOC)

Plus Cat B Dom Akuei ( OOC, but not relevant in this conversation )

Our 2024 Out of contract list is small.
Main list
Jack Martin
Jack Carroll
Corey Durdin
Matthew Owies
Harry Lemmey
Jaxon Binns

Rookies
O’Brien
Boyd
Mirkov
Cottrell

We must turn over three players minimum from the main list each year. So what is the state of the nation?

From the main list OOC group, only Martin would be likely. Corey Durdin lock, Carroll and Owies more likely than not to be retained. Lemmey and Binns long term investments in positions of need.

So we need AT LEAST two more to delist, likely more would be ideal.
From the rookies, most likely O’Brien given current trajectory, with the others being good long term depth. To be delisted next year as a required main list change, he would need to be promoted this year. With 2 1/2 years on rookie list, I believe we would also need to promote Mirkov and Boyd this year. Thinking Cotts stays as a rookie for his final permitted year.

So we need one or two player given one year contract extensions with the high likelihood of being delisted the following year from our 2023 OOC list. Any manager worth his salt will be aware if this and they will push for multi year contracts for their clients or seek greener pastures.

It will be quite a fascinating juggling act.

Easiest first, Rookies.
Ed Curnow (likely retire)
Sam Durdin (retain as rookie due to KPD depth requirements)
Hudson O’Keeffe (retain, you don’t rookie project rucks for 1 year)
Alex Cincotta ( ??? Think we would like to retain, but numbers game)

“Certain” retain
Nic Newman
Jesse Motlop
Jack Silvagni (unless lowballed)
Mark Pittonet

Discussion points - my views

Brodie Kemp (stay, required utility)
Mitch McGovern ( heaps to play out, reduced offer providing decent game count)
Paddy Dow ( we want his contract gone, if willing to stay on basic contract chance as depth)
Lachie Fogarty ( injury concerns and “low” ceiling, likely gone, could be kept for depth)
Tom De Koning ( intrigue )
Lachie Plowman (solid depth, reduced contract offer 50/50 for mine with Moo, Boyd, and probably Kemp and Cincotta in mix - maybe 1 year extension most likely outcome)
Caleb Marchbank (time running out, needs massive back end of season with no hiccups. On “form” unlikely)
David Cuningham ( as per Marchy)
Sam Philp ( struggled to get on park, out for year, best he could hope for is rookie spot)
Josh Honey (getting games, but still some question marks, perhaps 1year extension)

Thinking we may promote up to four rookies from Boyd, Mirkov, O’Brien, Durdin, Cottrell - best bet three.

Early calculations
Dow, Philp, one of Cuningham/Fogarty, Marchbank😪, one of McGovern/De Koning with cap issue or both could go, maybe one of Plowman/Kemp to go. It will be dependent on many factors. It won’t play out exactly and could increase by two or three, but thinking six main list changes, Ed to retire from rookie list, or could hang around as a mentor.

Three rookie elevations would leave three main list vacancies and two on the rookie list. We are surely not planning a huge draft haul having traded out of second and third rounds. If we cut the depth mids as I expect, we would be in the market for a DFA or two

There will be plenty of candidates, but surely we retain a couple.

Every club turns over on average 8-9 players each year
I recall Bob Murphy once describing it as the worse business model going around.

Used the example of the Dogs coming off their premiership year - players celebrating post grand final, each player being told how they played an important role in the overall success - a week before being told they've been sacked.

Obviously this comment Carrie’s into a list management issue but how many of our injured players (the ones that never get better) are out of contract and we can move them on for cap space to bring in 1-2 free agents that will make us better.

Marchbank
Cuningham
Martin

All should be on average to above average coin. Surely we can fill their roles with;

KPD - Ben McKay/Tom Doedee/Mason Redman
FWD/Mid - Alex Neal-Bullen/Riley Bonner/ Jade Gresham/ Lewis Melican
FWD - Lachie Schultz/ Toby McLean

AFL encourages a larger player turnover, minimum 3 players, drafts with futures trading, free agency, mid season draft

Next will be a mid season trade period

Toby McLean anyone?

No chance,

Hack.

The talk about Setters and Stocker will go on and on.

We know why Setters left and once again he is not a burst player he is much the same of what we already have.

Stocker isn’t and wasn’t in front of who we have in our backline already.

The only issue is that we should’ve got something more out of them from a trade value…..that’s all.

Martin is contracted for another year, but his contract was heavily front-loaded, so he's under average wage.

Marchy and Cunners signed 1 year extensions late last year. They're probably on or close to minimum wages. We're not going to be clearing heaps of cap space if we move them on.

Little bit worried about Jack Carrols development as an inside midfielder personally I would like to see him developing across halfback first then 3/4 years down the track tried in the midfield, one asset he does have is decent closing speed to play halfback compared to our other inside mids.
