Does anyone know if Jack Steele has intentionally lost weight over the preseason? He looked noticeably trimmer on the weekend. A few years back Cripps lost weight to improve his running capacity and it ended up taking away from his contested game. Mindful of that with Steele given it has traditionally been his strength.

I reckon it looks like he has had some sort of minor health surgery (tonsils, appendix, etc.) over the preseason and I'm quite wary also. Just doesn't look like his regular self and mindful how it may impact. We were getting track watchers saying he seemed a bit off, donned the non contact hat for a bit and noone could tell us why. In saying that, he has never been an animal in preseason football. Always saves it for game day.

One of Steele's best point scoring attributes is tackling (compared to other mids that accumulate more possessions). Being trimmer will help him get to more contests and therefore more tackles, but less effective if he can't stick the tackle because he's a weener :D

Think he will be fine tackling wise.

If Goodwin is going full Bevo/Horse and tries to turn Clarry into Callum Mills I might just cut my losses and bring Laird in. (or this could be another Bont and Macrae at HF situation) Why can’t coaches play their best players in their best positions?

Absolutely, everyone should jump off Piggy.

It's smoke and mirrors mate, Oliver is no good anywhere other than sticking his snout in the trough.

Petracca on the other hand is a massive watch for DPP.

You’re right on Trac, with him I hope he gets lots of time forward so I have a reason to bring him in Round 6

Why can’t coaches play their best players in their best positions?
Because they lack any understanding of the fact that this is one of the basic fundamentals of coaching a team sport. And that goes for any team sport. Sometimes it seems as if the coach just throws all the names in the air and how they fall is how they play. Their incompetence is mind blowing at times.

Crouch playing feeds into my theory that Laird will get thrown around a bit this year. They've got Laird, Berry, Schoenberg, Crouch, Pedlar, Soligo, Rankine and (to a lesser extent) Sloane, Rachele and Keays all in need of midfield minutes. I'm certain he'll spend a bit of time on the flanks throughout the year - he'll still almost certainly be a top-10 mid, but I can't bring myself to drop $700k on him.

As a general rule, experienced mids in young, bad teams are often a risk. As soon as they're out of finals contention, quite often they'll prioritise midfield minutes for the kids (see Adelaide with Keays last year).

Crouch playing confirms that Adelaide are tanking. :moustache:

There is no way Crouch will be in the starting team in round one.

That tweet for the team tomorrow is fool's gold in regards to who will be lining up round one.

Problem is Laird is their only good midfielder (others may become so but aren't yet). They have been trying to get rid of Crouch for years. Berry might get there, but at this stage he's a tackling machine who butchers the ball.

It's the same argument you just made about Oliver in the other thread really.

But if it scares folk off picking Laird I'm all for it.

I don't think it's quite the same argument though, MT. Melbourne are playing for a top-four berth, and Oliver is still only 25 (and can't play anywhere else). Adelaide are still a young team that won't realistically be pushing for finals, and need to give their young guys the chance to develop. At 29, it's extremely doubtful that Laird will play a meaningful role in Adelaide's next flag, plus as we've seen before, Laird is a more than competent HB. He won't start there, but my concern is that in the back half of the year, his CBA% will begin dropping off.

Fair enough.

My suspicion is that after years of treading water Nicks is under pressure to improve, and he will need his best midfielder playing in midfield to win games. Time will tell I guess.

Oh you could very well be right – Laird is still every chance to go 125+, but I just don't like dropping 700k when I have some doubts floating around in my head. Completely valid pick though.

It's a good debate. And it's important we get it right, we have a league to get to #1 after all!

I doubt it ....Rankine & Schoenberg will take points from Laird ....IMHO 115 ave will be around the mark

On reflection, this is what happened to Macrae last year.

But it almost doesn't matter, as long as Laird starts fast. If he is top 3 for the first 8-10 rounds everyone will trade him in, so his scores become less relevant.

As long as he starts well, its a win.

Macrae had Bont/Libba/Dunkley/Smith/Treloar not the mediocre names listed for Adelaide
