Position 2023 Midfielders

I’m on the Noah Anderson train. His numbers at the back end of the year were insane. Had something like 5x 120 plus.

Scored 71 from 60% game time v Giants last week. ✅
I'm really on the fence with Anderson, I'm tempted to run with him as M3. Do you reckon he has 110+ average in him this year? To counter your points, he only averaged 92 up to Rd 15 last year and his game last week only translates to about 95 with regular time

Probably that he was never behind them, so what difference would it make?
He wasn't behind them but McVeigh and Cameron both preferred to use him on the wing/half forward for most of last year, this year him and Green will be #1 and #2 for CBA's.

Going from this to 70%+ each week will make a difference for him.

Will Brodie averaged 102.4 last year in 69.2% TOG in his first full year as a midfielder at the top level. When he played in 70% TOG or higher he averaged 111 (12 games)

His TOG in the preseason game was 76% for 117 points and he was arguably BOG the week before in the match sim against Adelaide.

He was one of the best PPM last year and now he likely ups his minutes by maybe 8-10%? Playing under one of the best HTA% rucks in a team on the rise, and he'll never attract a tag because teams will go to Brayshaw.

  • Ball magnet
  • Wins a lot of contested ball
  • Tackles
  • Promising uptick in TOG%
  • 24 years of age
  • Durable - played every game last year

I'm surprised he's generated basically no interest at only 2% ownership considering when you look at the facts, it looks very promising.

You don't know that mate.

Cogs, Callaghan, even Ash could get those CBAs.

Especially Cogs, now that Leon is history.

But then maybe you're right and Jelly goes off.

Maybe I'm just not ready for him

I've posted this a couple of times but this seems like an appropriate moment to do so again

Poorly worded but more that he will be back to his previous CBA role if the weekend was any indication, where last yr he had 9 games with sub 50% CBAs

With the amount of midfield time Kelly plays anyway I’m not entirely convinced a few extra CBAs will help, particularly as seconds after it often becomes a rolling maul anyway, and I also wonder about ineffective possessions/clangers caused by pressure? Teams run about 5-6 mids at a time minimum, 3 get the CBA, how many + points do they get? Bont, Mills, Hewett and Walsh were all 55% or less.

Seen him in a couple teams and can totally understand. But you can get Tom Green for 30k less which just seems like strictly better value

Fair enough, each to their own.

That said there's a reason CBAs are one of the most heavily scrutinised and valued SC stats. The opportunity to attend 5-10 additional CBAs each game comes with related extra tackles, possessions and clearances that those outside the square don't have. If you are looking at a player that needs an uptick of 6-7 ppg to be a top 8 mid there's a reasonable chance that the additional CBAs will generate that, particularly for someone who's scored at that level or above in 4 previous seasons.

On the flip side, 2 of those games without Taranto he played North and Eagles for 125 & 111. Is that Taranto or is that shit team factor?

GWS averaged 1643 SC a game for the year - but the games they played without TT they averaged 1771 as a team, and with him they averaged 1594.

Lots more to look into!

(Not saying do or don’t pick him, just not sure you can isolate stats and claim great meaning necessarily - teams played etc comes into it too)

What's the knock on Josh Kelly this yr with Hopper and TT gone?

One question for me was if he attends significantly more CBA's, does he go back to being the 14 game a season injury risk he has been in the past?

As far as durability goes, he's always been a tad wobbly...

Tend to agree on this. Think it was more role related. He's got quite a few heat maps like this last yr when Cameron was playing funny buggers

Copping a solid Mummy knee to the head was his last period of missed games wasn't it?. Not really his fault or that his body has failed him in the last 3 or 4 seasons

I'm essentially set on this pending any rookie surprises but Libba had to go big on the weekend didn't he?
I've been steadfast on Serong since day dot so nothing will change but if Serong's form doesn't go where I expect it to go, I'll be keeping a close eye on Libba.

I thought there was a couple of hammy/calf issues thrown in and a concussion or three over the years?

It's no coincidence that his scoring dropped with his less inside role change over the last couple of seasons, but is it also a coincidence that these couple of seasons have been his only close to full ones?

Reading what others have said, I can only reinforce Jelly is in my side ......and I'd suggest Judd_Magic 's side ....what could be a greater testament to the worthiness of Jelly this year

I understand the knocks on Jelly .....but I blame Coach Cameron

What will be his role ? ....will he be on a WING ....will he play as an outside MID .....no, no ...NO !, he played as an INSIDE MID ! ......4 tackles, and 76% CBA's

I can only add to what other illustrious posters have written, by adding the final two reasons Jelly is in my side :

1. So I don't have to pick Whitfield !

Whitfield.png

2. And being a bit more frivolous ......look at GWS's first 6 rounds .....juicy !

The other issue is having all 3 of Green / Cogs / Jelly plus potentially one or two other Giants could create some imbalance through the byes
You don't want imbalance.

I've been stricken by this horrible disease on most weekends of my life.

My team will start without Green and Cogs. Giants have a new coach but let's not go all in thinking their issues have disappeared haha
