Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

With next year's top 5 predicted to be better mids than this year's. I think there's some merrit in splitting 3, if it ensures nabbing Geel 8.

End up with 2, 6, 8

6: Watson or O'Sullivan...or for those wanting a mid, Sanders
8 : Curtain/Caddy/Wilson

Combines best available with points of difference to our list needs.

3 bites instead of 2.
6 & 8 > 3.

while holding two of the late picks.
2, 6, 8, 15, 18

Not according to Twomey.

His general advice from recruiters is the current feeling next year is a poor draft, with clubs trying to trade capital into 2023, despite it being compromised.

Some underage mids certainly performed well. But so did McKercher, Duursma and Reid last year as an example, last years form has been franked with last years draft classes performance in the AFL this year.

Remembering Duursma kicked 6 in a game last year as a 16 year old for Gippsland and Reid should have arguably been the Larke Medalist.

Post Combine Final Draft Rankings

Not a great deal of change, few minor shifts in the top 10. Ryley Sanders pushes into the top 5, I just can't have him outside that range considering his consistent output. Jiath, Leake and Hastie all improve their previous rankings after I went back and watched more of their later season games. Couple of players added to the top 50 like Charlie Edwards, Riley Weatherill and Zane Zoletensky. Few other players added to the 50+ list. 93 draftable players not including mature agers like Mannagh.

Hypothetically you're drafting for us. Based on there draft ranges who would you select with our picks as they stand? Only selecting one for each spot.

Jed Dignal will be very upset you said he's from Sturt. He's a Rooster through and through!

Ashton Moir will be the steel of the
As others have said, there seem to be some decent gap-filling options there for our teen picks.
Assuming Leake, Murphy, Windsor, Wilson, Hardeman are gone, I can see us going for:
  • A ruck prospect: Edwards, Green or Goad. We should have our pick of them.
  • A running defender (or mid that can play that role): de Mattia, Roberts, Hastie
  • Either a tall defender (Schoenmacher?), a tall forward (Archer Reid) or a small forward (Collard?)
Having decent prospects in these roles makes us much more rounded even if gaps remain. I'd still trade two of them for O'Sullivan but can't see anyone doing that deal.
Surely George Stevens ranks above Hastie. I would throw Rudd or Morris into the Forward mix

I like the idea of a ruck prospect, a tall defender, and a tall forward (or maybe a small forward if he is deemed a very good prospect). I just can't imagine using a pick on a running defender when we can easily fill that role with one of our current gun players who isn't playing midfield. Just this time last year, we understood that TT was going to play that position. We have Sheezel and we have our picks 2 and 3 who might also fit the bill.

Tarryn Thomas was suspended half the season and George Wardlaw wasn't ready to play for most of the year.

And Will Phillips' first season back from glandular fever.

All three guys SHOULD be stalwarts in our midfield next year.
LDU and Jy were injured.....yeah great if we magically have a good run with injuries, but inside mids always do get injured, its tough on the body.

The fact we've shown no interest in trading for or attracting any small forward - and with the likes of Schultz and Ginnivan gettable - makes me wonder if we haven't already got Watson marked down with one of the top 3 picks.

Clarko loves his pacy creative small forwards too, its not like he doesn't rate them.

I'd be surprised. Schultz was out of nowhere (that we tried to get as a DFA in 2021) and Ginnivan doesn't really suit our side. And by that I mean more than anything I'd be surprised if we've marked down anyone bar pick 2 at this stage.

There are always sliders.

I honestly have no idea who we will take, who I think we will take or have a preference. I just hope it works out for the kids we do draft and we just climb the ladder.

In the mean time, I'll just watch the ongoing arguments on the side line
That you Luffy?

Why give up any of 15 17 & 18 when Edwards, Murphy, Leake, Schoenmaker, Jiath, Hardeman, A.Reid, Collard & Goad could still be around? All fill a need and are between between the 15 to 35 mark? Some might go earlier, but you will always get some sliders too.
Probably because the gap between all them and Reid is massive.

I think most people are in agreeance.

We should be able to get a KPD, Med Def and a Ruck at all those picks.

I like the idea of Jiath at one of them, we need an athletic POD down back.

He's also bigger than his brother, I think he could be an intercept type half back in time and play a bit taller than his brother.

He's an 1" taller than him at the moment, but seems to play a tad taller.

So you’d take McKercher and Sanders?

Even though that's where I rate them, if I was doing a phantom draft and was picking for North I wouldn't take 2 midfielder with those picks. It would be one of McKercher/Sanders then one of Curtin, Duursma or Watson. That helps with list balance much more than 2 midfielders.

Can Sydney match bids on Cleary inside the 40? I'd take him at 15 if Sydney can't match.
