A lot of people say that, I don’t buy it.

We were 2-8 in Melbourne that year (one was vs Richmond who won 4 games) and Carlton beat us twice. Don’t think we’ve won a final against the bigger vic clubs in Melbourne to this day.

The Hawthorn win was the anomaly.
You got me curious

Certainly no pre season camps like we have seen before.

We have had a few off field issues. We had Stengle / B Crouch, we had Tex and racism, we had Barossa training sessions that broke the Covid rules, which looking back wasn't bad but at the time it was.

Losing Doedee is going to hurt Nicksy's player retention record given he was a potential Captain when he took over but that's the Industry.

nix player retention may be predicated upon being overpaid and comfortable with low performance standards. Hopefully it's not, but its a definite possibility.

Looks like we need another edition of Carmo channels the Crows Coaches to help bigfooty understand our gameplan. Here goes:

Our gameplan is neither defensive nor offensive, at least primarily. Youre looking on the wrong spectrum.

Our gameplan is contested (vs uncontested). This tends to make it less free flowing and possibly lower scoring. If you consider a game we win 60 to 30 to be less offensive than a game with 100 to 70 result, higher scoring, same margin but latter is way less percentage, to be less offensive, then so be it. We don't consider it that way.

So we really don't know where you guys have got this defense first mantra from. It should be contest first.

We also consider our defenders defending to be excellent. They often operate in a system with 6 on 6 in the forward line. Other teams have 7 defenders to the oppos 6 forwards. Given we defend with one less defender, their results are very good. Note that because we have the 6 on 6, we dont have an extra on turnover, so you won't see us rebound out rapidly like you do with other teams.

The things that make our defenders look bad are breakdowns either elsewhere on the ground or that just shouldn't happen, such as stupid turnover kicks in terrible positions under no pressure. Note that because we allow the oppo the extra in our forward line, we have to be extra careful in how we bring it in to not get the fast turnover rebound. For this reason we also bring it in long and high to a contest, we know we have less chance of getting a mark but we also have less chance of them getting a mark in this situation and it frequently results in a ball up contest in our forward line that we will back ourselves to win, since contest is what we're all about.

Perhaps one last thing to note is that our whole setup requires that mids can work very, very hard, since its usually there where we expect to hold up a turnover out of our forward line. You will note the trend in our recruitment and attitude towards mids who can two way run, have enormous tanks and a mentality to chase.

/End Channel.

Hope this helps.

I guess Blighty's got it wrong as well then: “It’s rubbish”: Blight blasts Adelaide’s defensive priority

Nicks. Succeed or your out. I hope that's the message.

Adelaide fans are getting restless after six years outside the top eight, and CEO Tim Silvers says players and coaches are just as desperate to end the drought.
Silvers ends this with the typical Crows statement

Silvers said the Crows would not set themselves a pass mark, but he believed they could challenge the best teams.

If we are not showing signs of making the finals in 2024, then we need another coach.

Our list profile says it's unlikely this year, but we need to show improvement (including skill level & game plan) to give us an indication that we are heading back to finals action.

To me that means challenging at least. We might not make finals, but the signs need to be there. A comfortable 8-10 wins maybe against lowly sides is a failure imo.

Exactly!

We need to be at least on the cusp of finals.

Have a style of play that defeats some of finalists.

See improvement in most of our younger players.

Not too many off days.

In the article this is interesting. Adelaide will probably resign him.

Only four coaches in the AFL era, since 1991, have completed four seasons without making the finals and kept their jobs: Gold Coast’s Stuart Dew (heading into his fifth year), St Kilda’s Alan Richardson (sacked midway through his sixth), Carlton’s Denis Pagan (dumped during his fifth) and Brisbane’s Robert Walls (left after fifth).

never identify targets but definitely let everyone know that they were met.

That sounds like Sloane is out

Red Flag? Whilst the club is publicly behind Nicks for the foreseeable future - we know that coaching contracts are easily broken. The external pressure has already started to build. There were articles late last year about how Nicks won't survive the rebuild, Bickley has come out talking expectations. These sentiments will grow exponentially if we suck again in 2023.

Nicks aint safe.

Who would have thought this time last year that Ben Rutten would be fired one year after taking the Bombers to the finals?

Old Ratten had 3 seasons at St. Kilda. He took over a team in late 2019 that hadn't made the finals since 2011. He coached 69 games for 35 wins and even won a final.

Right now Nicks is at 60 games coached for 18 wins and highest finish of 14. In no way is he safe. People seem to forget our last two sacked coaches (Sando / Pyke) were both ousted with a further 2 years to run on their contracts.
It's a pretty easy thing to say and doesn't require a ton on insight or knowledge to say it. Not many coaches do survive, but that's the nature of rebuilds. You'll suck for 4-5 years and not many can survive that heat in any sport, but if the 1st coach laid the foundations properly then the next guy up gets to reap the rewards. That's not necessarily a reflection on Nicks, unless you're in the top 5% of coaches you have a pretty set shelf life when you're coaching a bad team.

And both Sando and Pyke were sacked because of off-field issues impacting their ability to keep a group committed to the club too. Thankfully that's one area Nicks has not had any issue with. There's no mutiny brewing behind the scenes that means you just gotta get rid of this guy NOW before the fan hits the s**t.

Football is still a simple game. Get to the contest, win the ball and then make a good decision and execute your skill. Run hard and give teammates an option whilst focusing on denying your opponent. It’s not changed since I was playing underage. There’s no 3D chess going on, we had a defensive system and rotated mids through the bench in u15s back in the mid 80s. Thinking there’s more to it than winning contests, decision making and skill execution is only for idiots.

Maybe go watch some AFL from the 1990's and then watch a game of AFL from 2022.

It is a completely different game. Rule changes, defensive structures, running patterns, film watching have all lead to a completely different sport.

This isn't the Tassie league.
