Particularly interesting considering the amount of underage AA's.

The Vic Metro midfield was also carried by it's younger players.

I can see this being completely off the mark in 12 months.
We tried to forecast talent 12 months out a few years back and missed on both first round picks and missed on Pickett and Serong!

No thanks.

Recruiters also stated the top 10 of 2022 was a weak one in comparison with the forcasted 2023 crop.

Well 2022 looks like (along with 2017) probably the strongest top 10 in a decade.

Right now, based on next year's current draft rankings for 2024 (Davo-07), they are going to be mids again. Even yesterday, Twomey said there's no star factor in the 2024 crop and clubs are looking to trade into the top 10 this year.

There is such a depth of midfield talent next year who have been performing at School & NAB/Coates League over the last 2 years - and the most part have been their team’s best handful of players. O’Sullivan, Gross, Smith, Smillie, M Reid, Z Johnson, Lalor, Moraes have all been Top 5 players on their teams this season. Add in Sid Draper, Hargrave from SA. There’s heaps more I could’ve added too, this was very quick. There will be the midfielders up the top. There is such a lack of Key Position though as of right now that it becomes hard to judge.

Well this is where it sits. Do we really need more mids again if we are topping up this year? We have a few chances to get a couple this year.

KANGAS KEEPING AN EYE ON DEFENDERS

NORTH Melbourne is monitoring the key defensive market ahead of this year's trade and draft period, as the club continues to wait on a decision over the future of its star free agent Ben McKay.

As revealed on AFL.com.au's Gettable last month, Swans unrestricted free agent Lewis Melican looms as an option as North Melbourne scours the possible key defensive targets.

The interest in Melican comes as McKay continues to weigh up his future, and with fellow key defender Griffin Logue set to miss a significant portion of next season after rupturing his ACL earlier this year.

Speaking on Gettable last week, the club's list manager Brady Rawlings said the Kangaroos were keeping a watchful eye over the market regardless of McKay's decision and said he was confident they would add to that area of the field.

"We've been in that space in our scouting," Rawlings told Gettable.

"When you do have a free agent who hasn't signed, you need to prepare to keep him and prepare to lose him. We've certainly been looking in that space to give us some more depth in that area.

"Whether that's through draft or trade, we're confident we'll bolster that part of the ground in this off-season." – Riley Beveridge
With Sydney interested in McKay, and our interest in Melican, a trade scenario starts to emerge (and yes, I know one is RFA and the other is a UFA). The point is a trade takes compensation dilemmas off the table for both parties, which depending on what else is going on, may have some attraction. For example, would the following suit both clubs: Sydney trade pick 9 and Melican, and we give up McKay and 15? (ie, we go up the board 6 places, and the players swap)

I personally think that’s an awful deal for North. Would want Pelican, Stephens and their pick 9 for McKay and something else. Particularly if there is other interested parties in McKay.

Then again it’s ol Brades negotiating.

I'd forgotten about Stephens, he does comes into the mix; is your 'something else' pick 15, or ...?

Not too sure mate I just figured we’re apparently interested in him and so we’d aim to do this all in one big deal.

I’d rather pick 3 over all that though, but if it’s not possible, then getting pick 9 and Melican is probably the best alternative.

Every year we hear at least one of;
it's a weak draft next year
it's a super draft next year
next year's draft is stacked with / has no mids
next year's draft is stacked with / has no talls

The reality is it's never completely one thing or the other.

I’m a yes to trading out future first, but only for the GC pick.

This draft has so much top end talent in areas that we need to address.

If we can walk away with Sanders plus bring in elite talent with pick 2, compo pick 3 and GC first then let’s get it done.

Sanders, Watson, Mckercher and one of either Curtin, O’Sullivan or Caddy then it addresses needs.

We also still have the Port pick to play with, you could trade that away for a future first, use it in a trade for a Flanders or somebody else.

A bit down the rabbit hole here, but say that the following happens;
  • We get McKay compo at 3
  • Hawks do rumoured trade of pick 4 for Ben King
  • Draft order is WC, NM, NM, GC, GC

Could we just trade picks 2 & 3 to GC for picks 4 & 5, with the promise that they don't take our guys? And, in exchange, they give us their F1 and/or Flanders & Hollands or whatever we can get?

Say that we want Curtin & Watson. They take McKercher and Durrsma before matching the Walter bid.

We still get Curtin and Watson plus some big assets coming back, basically for free. Similar to the Cadman situation last year.

It obviously assuming that WC won't be campaigners and will just take Reid at 1.

We want McKay to stay, says Clarkson

Alastair Clarkson is hopeful of convincing free agent Ben McKay to remain at North Melbourne but is confident the club will prosper whatever the key defender decides.

McKay, 25, is reported to have attracted interest from rival clubs as he becomes a restricted free agent at the end of the AFL season, his eighth with the Kangaroos.

Four-time premiership coach Clarkson is no stranger to free agency, having seen superstar forward Lance Franklin leave Hawthorn to sign a nine-year contract with Sydney at the peak of his career in 2013.

"We want him to stay," Clarkson said of McKay at Arden St on Thursday.

"But I've been involved in this caper for a long, long period of time and there's probably no bigger player in the game than 'Buddy' Franklin.

"He was one of the first of the first free agent players to leave. And we weren't happy with it at the time because we obviously wanted him to stay at Hawthorn.

"But the club was still able to prosper once he left. He was also able to prosper as a player (at Sydney), and so everyone can still win from these situations.

"So if Ben decides to stay … we feel like he's just ready to blossom into a really, really good key defender. He's already a good key defender, but his best seven or eight years should be in front of him now.

"But if he was to leave, then that's his choice. That's the whole situation with free agency, and you've got to be prepared for both sides."

Clarkson said there had been "ongoing dialogue" with McKay, and it was unlikely the big defender had already made up his mind.

"The culture of our game is you don't usually make your decision until the season's finished," Clarkson said.

"That's what we'd expect and we'll probably find out in two or three weeks' time."

Veteran Liam Shiels is another whose future will be decided in the off-season, and Clarkson said the club's need to keep a blend of youth and experience would be considered when making decisions about the playing list.

Kangaroos legend Jack Ziebell plays his final game on Saturday against Richmond at the MCG, following last week's farewell to club champ Ben Cunnington and the retirement of 161-gamer Aaron Hall.

"We've got to be mindful of the balance of our list and the amount of experienced guys that go off the list," Clarkson said.

"It's one thing to go really, really skinny in terms of experience, and another where you want to actually keep some of that experience around, too.

"So with the retirements of 'Ziebs' (Jack Ziebell) and 'Hally' (Aaron Hall) and also 'Cunners' (Ben Cunnington), that might play into our thinking that Shiels might play for another year, but we'll work that out in the fullness of time.

"It's the same with 'Goldy' (Todd Goldstein), too."

This is an even worse post than you pretending we didn't give up a second rounder for CCJ because of points

Where’d the Ben king rumour come from?
