A question to the experts about the GC pick 5 situation: are they after another salary dump trade similar to last year where they will try to offload a player along with the pick, or just the pick this time? If it's just the pick, given their three academy selections coming up and the state of their salary cap, I assume they will be after predominantly future picks. If so, in order to trump other clubs would it be beyond the realms of possibility to offer our future first in a swap for their future first as a centrepiece for the deal (with other picks changing hands etc)?

In my view, if we are serious about improving, we need to back ourselves to improve significantly next season and try to get out of the bottom 2-3 or even the bottom 4. That being the case we could back ourselves to finish around similar position as the Suns but they may think it represents value for them.

An extra top 5 pick this year would be extremely important to us in terms of our list build and I would seriously consider something like this to make it happen.

Pick swap from the looks... their cap is fine currently.

I agree completely, we should be trying to move our future first into their current first because I wholeheartedly believe that will be Watson. If they want to death ride us it should be an extra player or draft collateral on the top of it. A haul of Curtin/Reid, McKercher and then Watson (if the Hawks interest in Duursma is legitimate) is an all timer if McKay goes, even better if we get Sanders.

If we could get either of Flanders or Hollands into that deal...

To an extent.

Baldwin was one of the top prospects of the 2021 draft before doing his ACL in his top age year.
yep, I posted this a couple of weeks ago. He was SA captain but mainly played CHF. He still learning to be a backman.
They gave him a chance when no one else did, and converted him to a defender. Their work in the SSP and mid-season draft should be commended - but their high draft picking has been average to dreadful over the last decade.
A bit more to it than that. They literally hid him up on the GC and helped him with his rehabilitation. He's 100% gettable.

Just following on from the Genius and the Wizard, here are the relevant pars in Jon Ralph's latest:

There is cap space and flexibility to secure Richmond star Dustin Martin, but he has indicated he wants to remain at the Tigers and play his 300th game next year.

The Suns are keen to re-sign young midfielder Sam Flanders but will likely listen to offers for No.7 draft Elijah Hollands, who has played just nine senior games this year.

Wonder if the trade/FA period will bolster the 20-24yo / 30-50 game bracket. Big hole looming there especially if looking to start firing in 2-3+ years.
Maybe people like...
Ralphsmith, 21, 32 games
Georgiades, 21, 49 games
Graham, 22, 37 games
Stephens, 22, 41 games
Flanders, 22, 42 games
Riccardi, 23, 45 games

It is. The AFL is looking at going further with matching bids using picks in the same round only.
I agree it should be done like this, but you just know, somehow, after GC pick up 3 top 10s for a cobbled together collection of junk picks this year, it will be introduced at a time that bites us hard (L-Mac F/S style) and then gets "recalibrated" in time for the next generation of Swan academy players or Cats F/Ss

Out of that list I reckon perhaps Goldy, and Drury could be renewed. We could also rookie 1 or 2 like Spicer,Dawson,Free,Perez or Bonar. Then again they might say bye to all of them. Wonder how many Big Al delisted at the Hawks his first yr , probably a few. There is going to be a major cull though.

Curtin, McKercher, Watson & Sanders = 4 of a Kind. Add Joel Frejiah or Archer Reid with the Port pick = Royal Flush.
