Syd list boss Kinnear Beatson confirmed they're tracking Ben Mckay and have an interest in him
Also, they have a contract that has sat in front of Stephens for most of the year. If he hasn’t signed it by now, he’s gone.

There are many ways we could * this up

He’s restricted just means we can match a trade that doesn’t guarantee us band 1. If it gets to trade stage we are never getting offered more than that compo

The way to fullproof it is to offer just under band 1 money as I’ve mentioned

Sure, so let's hear about them ad nauseum.

Here's how you don't foolproof it... you offer band one money to a player you already have and they say no it doesn't make the other team offer band one money, it just gives them full run to walk over the club if it is matched. There is no need to give up an inch. Our official status is we will match a contract that doesn't net us band one compensation. If the Bombers or anyone else wants to test that then they run the risk. The only way this is even a concern is if Parish leaves but the Bombers should be prepared there to not have Parish and McKay on their list in 2024. They're gonna posture too.

So all considered, two things will play - the Bombers know they have benefited from this in the past and can structure to suit and ensure they don't have to waste a whole trade period negotiating for a guy they could have signed for free. The other thing that will play is they will receive a discount in some regard because age is a crucial factor in free agency compensation and in fact is one of only two factors. We have that on our side probably more than anyone previously due to Ben's underage status.

If the other team offered less than us then you’d expect ben to stay which is a good outcome

It doesn’t give the other club any way to ‘walk over the club’

The only options need to be Ben stays or we get band 1 compo

Everyone loses including us if it gets to a trade match stage where we won’t get the equivalent of band 1

Jesus Christ it’s hard being smarter than most on this board

As we've seen many times there are reasons to play for teams that do not involve money. I know that sounds sickening when comparing it to the Bombers but he may just not want to walk through our doors again. Even if so, with the whip hand, we let the market dictate to us the value, not vice versa.

We're not gonna lose him for less than band one, the club has said it. It's our right to play hardball, he is restricted. It's gonna be a long couple of months if everybody panics every time somebody said something. Honestly. A poster said with some form of ITK status yesterday that he'd told the club he was leaving, everyone panics. Today an article comes out saying we haven't even spoken to him about a contract, everyone panics. This constant f***ing expectation that the worst thing possible is going to happen to the NMFC is extremely tiresome.
it's every f*cking thread too, no where is safe

Please stop using these footywire comparisons. It's a puddle deep way to compare players and their value.

Former top five pick who hasn't got a great opportunity at Sydney due to their outside mid depth. Worth a crack every day of the week. Especially if it's for a second rounder at most.
It's pretty shallow using someone's draft spot to justify them, too, FWIW.

The stats at least show that his disposal efficiency is well below the league average. We already struggle with that last kick into F50, so bringing in someone with below-average disposal doesn't help us at all.

Getting a high pick cheaply is fool's gold. Have you wondered why they haven't locked him away yet? Have you wondered why it was him and not somebody else that was sent back to the VFL?

Ben staying for 150k p.a over market value is not a good outcome. That is the sort of dumb-assery that has got us into this mess in the first place.

It always surprises me how much confidence a total imbecile can talk themselves into having.

id rather that then lose him for less than band 1 compo, hes worth around 700k imo

which is what happens in a trade match scenario

If North want to get a band 1 compensation pick then they need to offer Ben whatever the minimum is that will get it. Then Ben will needs to decide whether to accept it and stay at the club or get another club invoved. If North offer less a less amount to what will get them band 1 then there is no doubt Ben will take whatever offer is there from another club...For my take l still think Ben will stay...

How true

Lets face it, no one thinks Ben is really worth pick 3. We all want it of course because that would be a long overdue win in the trading/free agency space.

Hypothetical: if the shit hit the fan and Ben ended up in the national draft with a 700k price tag, what pick do reckon he’d go? I’m going with 20-30.

hes worth (700k to us) 750k to pry away which is band 1

which just so happens to be pick 3 for a bottom 2 club

its the james frawley situation (ben younger which works in our favour)

Beatson said he's had a contract in front of him all year and he hasn't signed. He clearly thinks he's been misused.

He was an elite kick as a junior so relying on disposal efficiency, the worst stat in football, is an incredibly shallow way to judge a player.

I’d say around 12- 15. One of the better intercept marks in the competition but lacking defensive nous and fairly average disposal.
